Chapter 55: Rosary

After chatting with Jameson, Alora's brother, I got back to reading [THE BOOK OF NIGHTMARES.]

Not so surprisingly the book was full of smut.

However, it was also very educational. In magic AND smut.

"Goblins sure do know a lot huh? I guess that is why they're called the 'world's most adaptable race' for you."

This guy's knowledge in cursed arts is pretty decent. It's a shame he got himself killed. If he died later his father would have taught him a lot more.

"Actually I wish they put his fathers soul in this book. That would be way more useful. Unfortunately it's not so easy to kill an A rank mage."

Apparently this poop eater who's name I forced myself to forget was actually tasked with infiltrating my grandfather's entourage. Killing them if necessary. Sadly he succeeded in killing three of my grandfather's subordinates before he was caught and killed.

He did this using a few spells, one of them being [FIRE FLESH.] Despite the name this spell has nothing to do with fire.

"This is a cruel way to die… Should I even bother learning this? I guess it doesn't matter. I would need a test subject to use it on."

There were other spells like [CURSE OF BINDING.] This is more my style. I could combine it with my sleep affinity or paralysis affinity. Maybe both.

"Again, I need a test subject."

There were even more spells but there were just as many problems. All of them tied into one thing.

"I need test subjects!"

This isn't like casting a fireball. Sure I could cast the spells over and over again but how would I know if it works if I'm not using it on anyone!?

"Maybe I can cast it on myself?"

No no no. That just sounds disturbing. What about a slave? Rosary has a bunch if I recall. No, that's just messed up. The poop eater may be fine with doing that but I'm not.

Animals? Magic beast? Hmm, even for me that still seems wrong. Don't get me wrong, I was never like 99% of women back on earth who were disgustingly obsessed with animals to the point where I think they were having sex with them but, I don't think I can outright torture an animal.

(Why are you making this a big deal? You've been into dungeons before you can do it again. Heck with the amount of Depth Dwellers, bandits, natives and high elves you'll face it's only a matter of time.)

"High elves? Why would we attack them?"

(Because they suck.)

Are high elves really that bad? I doubt it. Pilfer is probably being a psychopath again.

"For now I'll get back to reading. Unless you have anything insightful to add then don't add anything at all."

(Huh? Didn't I help you already? If it weren't for me you'd still be wondering what to do with your spells.)

"Please. I would've figured it out eventually. Now stop bothering me."

All I could hear was an annoyed grunt before everything went silent again.

"Now that he's gone I can read my smut in peace."

I open the book again, flip to the right page and…

BANG BANG BANG

Of course someone knocks on my door. Can't a man read his smut in peace? It was about to get to the good part.

"Sir Jessup! I have orders from the master to retrieve you!"

I got out of bed and opened the door and saw a young scrawny boy. One of the sailors/movers I believe. He seemed a bit nervous and timid so I just pat him on the shoulder and walk past him.

"Sir, I was supposed to bring you to the captain's cabin."

"It's fine. I know where I'm going."

The kid looks a bit nervous. He doesn't have red skin so he's no demon kin. So I could definitely smack him around if I wanted to. Not that I would. I can tell he's a hard worker just by the way he's nervously waiting for me to listen to him.

So instead I just laugh it off and gesture for him to lead the way, "After you."

With a salute and a serious face he leads the way.

Where'd they find this kid? He's got this awkward look about him but I can tell he's a super, and a strong one.

"What's your name kid?"

The kid turns around and replies, "David" before tripping over one of the wires scattered around.

I just watch on as he stumbles over. Despite his personality being a bit weak his presence was definitely out there. I wouldn't say he was strong but there was something familiar about it.

"What kind of super are you? You're not a mage, so are you an esper?"

"No sir. I'm a psychic."

That explains it. I felt like I was sensing the [CHARM] skill. Turns out I wasn't too far off.

"Are you a liaison?"

David turns around and looks at me confused until he just chuckled.

"No sir, I'm just a mover. I move things with my mind."

What? That's a waste. He clearly has an affinity for talking to people. That awkward virgin act is a real hit with the ladies.

After thinking things over I finally walked up to the cabin door and waited for what's his face to knock.

"Master Makoto! I have brought Sir Grove to meet you."

"Let him in."

After the kid opened the door I walked inside without much greeting and sat down in one of the chairs. Plopping my feet up on the table.

I pointed at the kid before he walked away.

"I want one."

The kid turned around confused wondering if I was talking about him. After he saw my finger pointing at him he shook a little in fear before looking at Makoto and the others.

Alora was the first one to speak up, "To add to your harem? Sure I don't mind. Just as long as you share."

She had a devilish smile on her face like she thought she won or something. Think again.

"If I had him, why would I need you?"

Alora grimaced while trying to figure out what to say while the kid whom we were talking about just shook slightly in panic.

"Alright, stop messing around. Thank you David. You can go."

"You're always spoiling things, Father in law."

"FATHER IN WHAT?!"

Heh I knew that would rile her up.

Makoto just had an exasperated look on his face. He was clearly trying to figure out what to do from here.

"So? What's the big plan?"

Makoto just sat down in his chair before rambling on.

"We're ahead of schedule. We'll arrive sometime in the morning by the time you're all awake. So about noon."

Finally, gramps really sent us way too far from Rosary.

"Remind me why the old man dropped us off so far away? I know we need passports and to pay fees and all that but we could've done that sooner if we were a lot closer."

"Who knows? Maybe he thought we could all use a vacation. Maybe he thought it would be funny."

"Also my ship's scanners have detected an awful lot of sea monsters. I mean a TERRIFYING amount."

I looked at Alora for a moment worried about how she would react but surprisingly she was mostly just mildly confused.

"Don't forget that my ability makes it so that all creatures that live among the sea are all neutral once they get near our ships. Even some of the most aggressive and the most vindictive creatures will merely choose to watch us from a distance."

That ability is so overpowered. Not because he's capable of making sea life peaceful but because there has yet been a limit to the creatures he can pacify.

"How do you think that elven fleet got all the way to Rosary? If the seas are so crowded then surely they would've attacked the elves."

Alora just sat there in silence thinking. However, it was Makoto who spoke up.

"You'll have to ask them when we get there. For now, we just have to get there."

"My money is on human sacrifice."

Alora looked aghast! I could tell she wanted me to shut up but her father quickly intervened.

"Hold on Lora, what Jes says isn't unlikely. There are plenty of seafaring and aquatic cultures out there. Some of which even live side by side with eldritch horrors straight out of a serial killer's nightmare."

After discussing the disturbing possibilities we finally decided to just wrap things up with one more matter.

"By the way Jes, your grandfather dropped a few things off. He said you'll know what to do with them."

Makoto slowly got up and started walking over to a large chest.

"You really went all in with the sailor vibe huh."

He just gave me a sly grin before going back to digging around in his treasure chest.

"Here it is," he spoke with a big toothy grin. Probably still thinking I complimented his aesthetic taste. "Here's your sack of balls."

"Eew dad."

"Hehe."

"Heh."

After tossing the sack on the table I reached out and opened it up. After peering inside I couldn't help but silently gasp.

"Are these dungeon cores?!"

After spilling them out on the table I counted about 24 palm sized crystal balls. One of them I recognized.

It was the half zombie core and 23 other cores with various mismatched colors. Some of which were very pretty or just gross to look at.

"Ah crap. I just tossed these things like it was a sack of flour. Glad I'm not dead."

"Why didn't gramps just send it through the demon shop?"

I just rolled some of the cores in my hands while sitting back with a confused look on my back.

After thinking for a second I decided to throw the cores in my storage space so I could have them appraised.

"Your gramps had some info he needed to pass on to me. He just tossed these little bombs my way without telling me anything else."

"Was it anything important?"

"No, we just talked about the company. Where to invest our money, where to pull out. That kind of thing."

I just shrugged before turning to my appraisal window. I wanted to take a good look at what I was looking at out of curiosity.

[MINOR SNAKE CORE.

THIS CORE BELONGED TO A SNAKE DOMINATED DUNGEON.

ATTENTION, THIS CORE IS WILLING TO REWARD YOU WITH 27 EXP IN EXCHANGE FOR IMPLANTING IT IN A SAFE LOCATION!

DO YOU ACCEPT?

YES/NO]

"Wait, dungeon cores are still alive?"

I looked up to Makoto hoping he had an answer.

"Uhh I don't know."

I just looked at him carefully hoping he wasn't just hiding something from me but it seemed like he really had no clue.

"Neat."
