...

She started by saying, her voice filled with anguish, "It was such a horrible thing." She began to think back on happier times. "Approximately...fifty years ago, when I was a teenager, a pack of Gyarados attacked Vermilion City in Kanto. At the time, I was a Pokémon Trainer. These creatures are most likely the most dangerous Pokemon that can be found in the wild. Thousands upon thousands of people lost their lives as a result of the chaos. The law was given the name of one of the victims who was affected by it."

There was nothing else that could be said. Gracie continued.

"The coast guard contacted the Pokemon Champions for assistance. They were able to drive them off through fighting. After that, a lot of people started talking about ways to stop something similar from happening again in the future. Then, in an effort to exert even more authority over Pokemon, they devised a scheme that was completely bonkers. They reasoned that there ought to be more trainers out there trying to capture them. Therefore, they made the kids from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who struggled academically into the trainers."

The information was slowly processed by the brain. This wasn't covered in the one history class I took back when I was in school, and the fact that the "Amber Act" was about fifty years old was horrifyingly alarming to me at the time.

She expressed genuine relief as she uttered the phrase, "Thank goodness I wasn't born into the act." "And this is where I call home."

My eyes were suddenly opened to the reality of the situation. Without even realising it, Gracie and I had made it all the way to the suburbs of Violet City while we were walking together. Her house was on the smaller side in comparison to the neighbouring cookie-cutter two-story homes. The setting, which was dark and purple, brought back unpleasant memories of New Bark for me. Her yard was devoid of lawn ornaments in contrast to those of her neighbours, who had statues of Doduo and Dodrio in their yards.

"Edward, I appreciate you walking me to my destination. You are such a gentleman at such a young age "said Gracie in a sweet tone as she approached her front door.

I acknowledged her with a nod. "Ma'am, I cannot thank you enough for your assistance with the Shinx."

Gracie opened her door by unlocking it and turning the light on once she was inside. The Skitty leaped off of her head and ran inside the house. "Well, I'll hopefully see you again Edward. I really hope that during your journey you are able to acquire all of the badges that you require. Good bye Edward."

Her words cut deep into my emotional core. What exactly was she trying to imply? "Have a nice day, Miss Gracie."

After saying that, she went inside and locked the door. The air had grown slightly chilly, reminding me of how the morning after Rob and I camped out for the first time was when we first got up.

Following close behind me were June and the Shinx as I made my way back to the inn.

Rob was nowhere to be seen in the space. I illuminated the space in between the beds by turning on the lamp. Another note, this one written on a sheet of notebook paper, was located next to the note that I discovered this morning. After June had climbed up onto my bed, I had already picked up Shinx and positioned him next to her. It is to be hoped that they will get along. It's possible that getting some shut-eye with both of them will be beneficial. While I was sitting on the bed, I read the latest note.

Ed

Man Oh man, the time I spent with Felicity was absolutely insane.

When we next speak, you can count on hearing all about it from me.

Since I'm going to be staying the night with her right now, I think you can probably guess what's going to take place:).

She was plainly pleading for it to be done.

In any case, you can count on my presence again tomorrow. I'm hoping you were able to handle your Shinx. Prepare yourself because I intend to show you how to make June shoot fire and Shinx use the electricity that it generates.

See you tomorrow, cya.

Rob.

I couldn't help but mutter, "Wow, lucky him." I laid the card on the table and proceeded to get ready for bed. After turning off the lamp, I laid down and reflected while holding June, who was now sound asleep, in one arm and Shinx, who was not giving up, in the other.

The Amber Act had been in effect for half a century. Since then, exactly how many children have been forced to leave the homes where they were raised? And could you please elaborate on what Gracie meant when she said that she was thankful that she wasn't born into the act? Did it also have some other effect on the people it was directed at? How in the name of all that is holy could something so unjust come to pass?

Because Pokemon are dangerous.

I kept a close eye on both of my Pokemon.

There, I pulled myself to a halt. My thoughts kept going back to Rob's words. It was his instruction that I should not think. In all candour, I was starting to feel a little too full of myself.

My upcoming match against Felicity in the gymnasium should have been my primary concern, but I failed to give it that level of attention. Rob said he'd get my ready.

The things that Gracie had said about her son came to mind at that moment. After being coerced into becoming a trainer, he went on to earn eight badges, after which he moved to another city and started a family. He was able to regain his independence.

Therefore, it was not impossible. Despite this, Gracie was somewhat dismayed by the fact that he was unable to accomplish very much with his life after the event in question.

Once more, I was able to prevent it.

I had a conversation with myself in which I recommended that I just go to sleep. Even though it was an unsettled night, the Shinx was able to fall asleep before I did.

I'd like to believe that today was a very memorable and significant one. This day had something more than just a bonding experience with the Shinx, which led to our later development into a badass duo. I believe it was around this time that I started to think about things other than my objective of obtaining all eight Johto badges.
