......
The sun was just about to go down. I prepared the Skarmory that was in front of me by sitting cross-legged and watching Rob work with his Charizard. Something that initially appeared to be inedible transformed into something that appeared to be extremely appetising. Rob explained that what Charizard was doing was similar to cooking the meat in the steel while also making the metal softer and looser, which would allow all of the meat's juices to remain in the meat. The Charizard used its jaws to hold the charred remains of the body as it dipped them into the stream. There was a sizzling sound, and steam rose into the air. After waiting for a few moments, the Charizard eventually took it out of its hiding place and presented it to Rob.
Rob took a hunting knife out of the large backpack and inserted the blade into some small grooves on the animal's neck. He then explained that the steel on the animal's neck was the weakest of the entire body. He pulled the blade out of its sheath and indicated to me that it was cooked by pointing out the small amounts of blood that remained. He then peeled off the plate of steel while maintaining the knife in the groove it had been in. On the underside of the plate there were chunks of meat. He passed it to his Charizard, who was watching him carefully over his shoulder as he did so. It pounced on it with its clawed hands and immediately started licking it with glee.
When a Skarmory is heated for a sufficiently long period of time, the tendons that hold onto its steel skin become weakened. I simply insert a knife into the groves of the neck, and then I start peeling my way around and down."
When he removed the plates that were around the neck and carved the head off of the animal, he caught me off guard. He then put the head to the side. He let out a laugh.
"In time, you'll become accustomed to it."
I was given one of the plates by him. On the underside, there were a few pinkish pieces of flesh. I couldn't help myself and grabbed a piece of it with my front teeth to see what it was like. I had to do some pulling before the piece came loose, and then I chewed it. The tendon was tough and dry, but it had the flavour of a Swellow that was only slightly sweet.
I gave June permission to take a bite out of my plate. At first, she was hesitant, which brought back memories of the fact that she was just a baby. She pretended to evaluate the meat by sniffing it in order to determine whether or not it was edible, and then she bit into it. She chewed, then swallowed, and continued to take additional bites.
Rob took his time and was extremely cautious as he removed the plates from the breast and the legs. He unscrewed the plates that were attached to the underside of the wings and twisted them. The sound of the bones breaking was unsettling to listen to, but seeing the scalded flesh made my stomach make a grumbling sound. Following the twisting of the wings, he took his knife and began to carve the wings away from the area where the plates had been removed. He tacked the wings to the side of the plane.
It would be best if you plucked a feather from one of the wings and then wrapped some fabric around the base of the feather. It has the potential to be a good knife."
I made a mental note of this.
He cut off a significant portion of the breast and then started to tear it in half. When he tore it, I could see strands of pinkish-red flesh tearing away from it. No blood dripped. He gave me the larger portion of the pie.
"Dig in."
And I did. It tasted much better than the bits of meat that had been stuck to the plate in the earlier stage. It had a very pleasant sweetness to it, and the texture was very tender, almost as if the Skarmory possessed its own blend of spices and seasonings within its body. I gave June a piece, and she devoured it with gusto after I handed it to her. Rob continued to rip his piece apart and then gave the larger of the two pieces to his Charizard.
Rob bestowed upon me a sleeping mat that I could use. We both proceeded to place the mats at the location where Charizard was currently relaxing. The position that June held brought her the closest to the fire.
That evening, Rob and I engaged in some light conversation, but my primary focus was on learning more about him, particularly his background and origins. He told me that he was from the Kanto region and that the Charizard was the fully evolved form of his first Pokémon, a Charmander. He also said that the Charizard was his second Pokémon. He explained that he was excited about the upcoming Johto Pokémon League Championship and that he was looking forward to competing there. In order to provide evidence for this claim, he removed a white cloth from his backpack and wrapped it around himself. When he unwrapped it, I saw a row of eight badges that were shiny and had a variety of colours on them. At first, I didn't understand what it meant by this.
"This is a badge of the Kanto region."
He described to me the many cities and towns that he went to as well as the various tests that he had to take in order to earn his badges. He explained to me that each gym was centred around a particular species of Pokémon. I asked him if he used his Charizard to work through each and every one of them. He mentioned to me that he had other Pokémon, but that they were not currently with him because they were in his "box." After noticing that I was perplexed, he went on to explain that boxes were the places where Pokémon trainers kept the Pokémon they were not using at the time. He then went on to explain that trainers were only allowed to have a maximum of six Pokémon at any given time.
"At any given time, a trainer can have a maximum of six active Poké Balls that are registered to his ID and in his physical possession. As soon as you have successfully captured a seventh Pokémon, the ball will be transferred to your Box. You can access your Box in Pokémon Centers."
I informed him that I was considering going to the gym in Violet City in order to acquire the badge that is offered there. Instantaneously, he assured me that he would teach me how to capture a Pokémon and help me find one of the electric type so that I could use it.
And finally, he added, "One more thing." "Would you like to make a deal?"
I was curious, so I asked, "What do you mean?"
"Well... if you're interested, I could give you some pointers on how to become a better Trainer. Do you think you could travel with me all the way to Ecruteak City? If you need any assistance with the gyms, I'm definitely here to help.
I inquired as to what benefits he could derive from it.
"The main reason I'm in Johto is to check out all the local attractions. When the Kanto Championship began, I was missing my eighth badge in Kanto and could not compete. In addition, I hadn't been able to watch the Sinnoh or Hoenn Championships. There are still a few months till Johto's. In addition to the fact that travelling would be a beneficial way for me to train my Pokémon, I would also be able to gather intelligence about the most skilled trainers in this area and prepare to face them. I despise how haphazardly occasionally the Championships get started..." He gazed up at the starry sky above him. "Hell, if you're quick enough, we might both wind up in the Championship together," he said.
I was able to appreciate it more because it made sense to me. I responded that it was all right.
Rob smiled. "Nice. The next day, we will travel to the city of Violet. He rolled onto his back and turned his back to me, facing the opposite direction. "And now, we sleep."
I rolled onto my back and closed my eyes before drifting off to sleep. As a result of all that happened today, I discovered that I went to sleep very quickly. Although I didn't find sleeping on the ground to be nearly as uncomfortable as I had anticipated, I will admit that I did long for my own bed at times.
The sensation would go away for good in due time. I believe that Rob was the one who was most responsible for it.
