Kapitel 8: Magic in action

Seeing the dire state the baby was in Olak moved right away to diagnose the problem. In short order he understood that blood was not clotting, which meant the wound was unable to close on its own. Instead of explaining first, he rather chose to treat the injury. He started chanting 2 distinct words, upon which tiny blue and white lights started dancing around his palm that was facing Zora's wounded arm.

Seeing this Zora stopped focusing on keeping his injury stable. He wanted to witness the whole process of magic, so while he intently glared at whatever Olak was doing, his wound regained some momentum and bled all over the table which he was on. In the last two hours he lost a lot of blood, way more than what a baby could tolerate, so his vision was getting blurry and was fading. He kept watching nonetheless. He felt like his life wasn't in too much danger, unless the healer turns out to be as competent at magic as a baby. Thus he fought the drowsiness hard and kept watching.

Olak on the other hand cursed out loud seeing the wound opening up and bleeding at a higher rate. He knew he must make haste. He chanted even faster, the magical lights circled his palms even faster. When he finished, he spoke 3 words which Zora couldn't understand, then placed his palm on the wound. In a matter of seconds the bleeding stopped, and when Olak removed his hand it was plain visible that the wound completely closed up, like it wasn't ever even there.

With the healing done Olak could rest easy. Trying to finish so fast left him a bit exhausted, so he sat down with a huge sigh on the closest wooden chair. Seeing the wound gone Lilly could barely stop herself from jumping into the arms of the old healer, embarrassing herself and her whole family in the process.

"Thank you very much, Olak... Without you, I'm afraid I would've lost my precious little baby boy..." she said between two sniffs, she was tearing up.

"I managed to stop the bleeding. But this was the easy part... Listen here, Lilly. You have to carefully listen to what I say, because this is very important. Sit down." Olak said after standing up to find another chair, which he pulled in front of him, then pushed Lilly down onto it. "Blood not clotting is not an everyday disease. It's very rare, I've barely seen it a few times in my life, and its not something... that I can heal... Usually it is the sign of other diseases being present, and if those go untreated the child won't live for too long. If we're lucky, he might not have much problems in life. If not... he might have only a few years to live."

Lilly listened to the explanation with a shattered heart and broken smile plastered on her face. If she was on the verge of crying before, now she was hit so hard by the news, that she was simply sitting there with blank eyes. Her thoughts could barely crawl. Soon the shock of the dreadful news dissipated and she broke out in tears.

"Nooooo... How can this be?! My baby boy... Why him, why must it be him...?!" She cried without stop.

Olak let her bawl her eyes out for quite a few minutes, even though he had a few other clients to tend to. He was already used to bring people both good and bad news, but these situations were the hardest. When he had to be the one to deliver Death's sentence upon a harmless child. Obviously it was possible to save him, even more, it was possible to cure him completely without a hitch. But he was not capable enough. Also it was not possible for an ordinary farmer family to achieve. In the cities there were countless magicians way better at their art than Olak, who could easily cure a child such as this one, if they were paid right. But their rates were not something Zora's family could afford.

When Lilly somewhat finished grieving her child in advance, Olak grabbed her shoulder and kept talking to her.

"Listen here Lilly. Even though its not rare, but its also not set in stone that he must die. You hear me? He might live trough his life without another problem occurring. So stay strong and try not to think about it much. Maybe he will get lucky. You don't know, so don't order his gravestone yet, okay? Just live your life like you anyways would." Hearing this Lilly somewhat calmed down. She kept wiping her tears and sniffing, but she was determined to be hopeful and believed that the Gods would not strike down an innocent child like that.

All the while Zora was quietly lying on his back on the desk. He kinda felt like he was forgotten there, but he rather stayed strong and endured. When he heard his mother crying so hard then he thought the worst come to pass. He believed he was on the verge of death and couldn't fathom how life can be so stupid sometimes. He was dead tired but still had the mental energy to rant a few lines in his brain about his rotten luck. He couldn't be happy about seeing magic after all.

But no matter how much he tried, exhaustion completely overcame him and he fell asleep. The two adults saw this and the healer moved to check up on him.

"He's a sturdy little fella for sure. If any other kid his age received such a wound and lost so much blood, they would've probably died. But this one has life written all over it. I don't think there will be any more problems, just make sure he doesn't get cut this badly again. Small cuts and bruises will heal easily, so you don't have to worry about those." Olak said. He began reminiscing about other cases, where he was unable to save the patient. Then he shook himself and steeled his nerves. This little kid even managed to make him sentimental. Too much trouble for one night.

"Once again thank you very much, Olak. How much do I owe you?" asked Lilly still sniffing. She brought with herself all the money they had at home, just to make sure. The price of a healer could be huge, if the ailment was bad enough.

"Fifteen copper coins will suffice. I haven't done much, just healed a surface wound." came the reply. It was very generous, considering he also diagnosed the kid and gave some useful advice. Lilly didn't want to complain though, she just paid his dues and kindly thanked the man once again before grabbing her pack and Zora and leaving the house.
