Early one morning, Kirito trained in the forest, battling against his Wood Clone. Since TenTen and Lee could no longer match his pace and Guy was often occupied, the Wood Clone had become his primary sparring partner. The clone was relentless, exploiting every gap in his defenses.
Kirito was refining his instincts, training to react purely on bodily perception without relying on his sight or hearing. The result? His body was battered from repeated mistakes, but he was learning.
Just as he paused to evaluate his progress, TenTen approached, slightly out of breath.
"Kirito! Teacher Guy said Lady Tsunade wants you to report to the Hokage Building!"
"What's going on?"
"I don't know. Mr. Guy wouldn't say, but he looked really excited."
[Could it be Sasuke's defection already?]
Kirito activated his Byakugan for confirmation, scanning for Sasuke's chakra signature. Sasuke was still within Konoha, so it wasn't that. Puzzled, he followed TenTen to the Hokage Building.
Upon arrival, a Chunin escorted him into a room where Tsunade and several Chunin examiners were gathered. To his surprise, Shikamaru was also there.
"Hey, Kirito! Over here," Shikamaru called lazily, waving. "Looks like it's just the two of us who passed the Chunin Exam."
[Becoming a Chunin already? Won't I miss a lot of things?] Kirito thought, but Tsunade began speaking before he could dwell on it.
"Since both of you are here, I'll get straight to the point," Tsunade announced. "Despite the interruption of the Chunin Exams due to the Sand and Sound attack, the Daimyo and the examiners unanimously agreed that both of you displayed exceptional qualities deserving of promotion.
"Shikamaru, your strategic acumen and leadership impressed everyone. Kirito, your overwhelming strength and skill set you apart as a powerhouse of your generation.
"From this moment forward, you are Chunin of Konoha. Do not let your forehead protectors be tarnished. Serve this village with honor."
Tsunade's sharp gaze fell on both of them. Shikamaru sighed, scratching his head. "Man, this is such a drag..."
Kirito gave a small nod, his expression neutral.
After they left, Tsunade lingered on Kirito's file, flipping through the details.
"An extraordinary medical ninja, a master of Taijutsu, and capable of wielding not one but two Kekkei Genkai... The Third Hokage really did leave me a treasure."
She tapped her finger thoughtfully on the table. A ninja like this was wasted as a Genin. If Kirito's record continued, he could soon surpass even elite Jonin.
At Ichiraku Ramen, Kirito and TenTen celebrated his promotion.
"Congratulations!" TenTen said with a grin. "I knew you'd make it to Chunin!"
"I was actually considering declining the promotion," Kirito admitted.
"What? Why?"
"I wanted to take the exam with you and Lee. It's not the same without us all together."
TenTen's expression softened before turning confident. "Don't worry about us. Even without you, Lee and I will pass the next exam, no problem!"
"You misunderstood," Kirito replied. "I'm sure you'll pass. I just regret not being there to see it."
"Well, the rules require a three-person team. Without you, we'll need a replacement."
[Easy solution—Sakura.] Kirito thought but didn't say.
After finishing their meal, they headed to Konoha Hospital to visit Lee.
As they neared the hospital, a sudden splash of water fell from the roof. Kirito instantly froze it with Ice Release, transforming the deluge into sparkling snowflakes.
"What the—?" TenTen asked, bewildered.
"Someone's fighting on the roof," Kirito said, his Byakugan scanning the area. His gaze locked onto the destroyed water towers on top of the hospital.
"Seriously? Who fights on a hospital roof?"
[It's Sasuke and Naruto.] Kirito recognized the scene immediately. The rooftop duel marked another step toward Sasuke's eventual defection. The pieces were falling into place.
[Shikamaru's promotion, Lee's upcoming surgery, Sasuke's bitterness—all the threads are converging.]
Still, he couldn't leave. He had promised Lee he would assist during the surgery. The defection could wait—Lee came first.
A few days later, at the hospital, Tsunade prepared for Lee's surgery, with Kirito assisting her. As he scrubbed in for a simulated surgery, Kirito's mind briefly wandered to Sasuke's impending defection.
[If it happens while we're here... I'll join the retrieval mission as soon as Lee is safe.]
For now, his focus was clear.
Lee's future depended on this operation, and Kirito would ensure its success.
