Kapitel 64: The Number Two

"----goodbye--"

I blink hard, opening my eyes to the warm light streaming through the windows. As I get out of bed and get dressed, I try to remember my dream, but to no avail. Not that I was expecting much; I haven't been able to recall anything from my dreams in a long time.

The only thing left is that feeling.

The kind of feeling you get when you have to make an impossible choice.

Just as I'm about to pour myself a glass of water, the door to the small wooden cabin opens. I glance up.

"Oho, somebody finally decided to wake up~?"

A young woman smiles back at me, her long hair flowing the breeze.

"Good morning to you too, Sofia."

Whenever I laugh or smile, it feels like my face is straining against it. Like my muscles have gone unused for so long, they don't quite know what to do.

The girl chuckles, "Morning?? Try afternoon!"

"Sorry, sorry~"

She sighs, trying to hold back a grin, "Honestly, what am I going to do with you, Sebastian~"

I shrug.

Things are rather uneventful these days, since my defeat of the greater monsters so long ago. Regular monsters still appear around the world, especially around here, but I don't mind. A bit of exercise does me good.

We decide to go for a walk around the glittering lake, the royal castle visible on the horizon. The afternoon light is warm and comforting once I get used to it, but when first I feel it, I clench my jaw, as though expecting pain.

"Is everything alright?"

"Oh, yeah, I just felt a bit weird for a second."

She tousles my hair playfully.

It's funny, whenever I'm in the capital, everybody treats me like royalty. Well, I guess I technically am, since my marriage with princess Sofia, but I don't like it. I never have. Out here, though, I don't need to worry about all that. It's just me. And Sofia.

I look out over the water and take a deep breath. It's at times like these that all of my concerns seem to fade away. The feeling from my dream dissipates, too.

Whatever choice I had to make, this was the right one.
