Sitting out front on the porch, Denki watched the sun rise. The golden rays splaying gentle warmth over the courtyard, as it coloured the world in vibrant hues, that the night had hidden in its dark expanse. His mind drifted in the early morning silence.
Time had passed since the day that everything had changed for him. Moving in with his gruff, estranged gramps had been tough for the timid kid, but he'd managed. 'Not that the old man had given me much of a choice' he thought with a chuckle.
Life had changed drastically for him from that point on. Gone was the sweet, dumb kid who thought life would be a breeze. But then what could you expect after all that had happened.
He breathed out a long, drawn out breath. Clapping his hands, he stood up in a single fluid motion. 'Enough of that. Time to eat.' with that he made his way to a dining room.
It was relatively large already but to Denki it felt massive and empty. It was only ever him and his grampa that lived here, so the space felt wasted.
The long table could sit a whole family comfortably, yet only two seats lined its sides.
At the head, sat an old man. His face wrinkled and hair grey but even that failed to hide the power that hid beneath. Age may have eaten away at it but the man was still no weakling, that was for sure.
"Sit, Denki." The man spoke in a tone that obviously brooked no arguement. "So are you still decided?" A loaded question and one that held with it a piercing gaze.
"Yes," Denki responded nonchalantly, already used to the old man's aloof and rough way of speaking. "Im still gonna take part in the tests, it'll be a good way to test myself" he added.
"Fine, seems like a waste of time to me. But its your time, so, do as you want with it." The deep voice of his Grandpa putting an edge to his tone.
"Oh come off it old man, I know you wanna see where I stack up against the rest of my generation too." Denki said, exposing his Gramps ruthlessly.
He could only laugh as the old man only had the diginity to cough as he averted his gaze. "Little tyke."
Denki could have sworn he heard muttered under his guardians breath but then again he hadn't been enhancing his senses so who knows...
'Yeah no I definately heard it.' he thought as he smirked at the old mans actions.
"So you gonna wish me luck or no?" He asked cheekily capitilising on his grandpa's embarressment. "Like you even need it, yellow haired demon." A thunderous laugh shook the table as his gramps grinned.
"Yeah thats true" Denki's roguish grin matched the mans own. If there were any doubts about their relations, seeing the two as they were would put them to rest... And scare off anyone nearby too.
"Get eating already, you don't wanna be late do ya." The grizzeled patriarch of the Kaminari family shot out. "Yeah yeah, I've got time." Denki waved his hand as he bit down on the toast he'd been spreading his jam on.
The two ate in companionable silence, broken only so often by one of them bringing up anything of interest.
"So did she also decide to pass on the recommendation route too?" His gramps asked over his newspaper, as he supped on his tea.
"Nah, she decided it wasn't to her strengths. Besides, she doesn't care as much about where she ranks as me, you know that" Denki responded amid bites of his jam toast.
"What you really mean is she isn't as much of a battle junkie as you" his grampa added amid chuckles.
"Yeah well who's fault would that be if I was" Denki asked pointedly as he smirked, not denying it.
"Never said it was a bad thing.." the shameless old fox grinned in response.
------------------------------------------------------
The train ride in was uneventful, as Denki made his way up from the station. His nerves had started to pulse as adreniline trickled into his body. This was it.
Today was the day.
It wasn't like he was worried, no. He was confident in his abilities honed over the years since he was taken in by the old man. But it didn't stop the small bundle of nerves, built up from the expectations of today, from bubbling to the surface.
As he stalked up the road to UA, his legs carrying him swiftly with a subtle fluidity to his movements, he stopped abruptly. The school was bigger than he expected, and more impressive in person.
Acres of land had been sectioned off, high deterring walls encompassing the entire perimeter. In the center of it all, peaking above those very walls was the main building.
Like an imposing H embossed onto your eyes from any angle. The tall block of glass and metal pierced into the sky dominating anyones vision. 'Im more into traditional architecture but I'll admit its still pretty cool.' Denki thought to himself as he stood before the archway leading in.
Having admired what he was sure would soon become his new stomping grounds, he walked in with a confident stride. He was about to start his official training into becoming a hero and nothing would stop him from achieving his dreams.
As he crossed the threshold he made his way for sign in. This was why he had decided to show up a little early. To enrol in the entrance exam you need to sign in and get your allocated seats for the hall during the written test.
Looking ahead he let out a breath as he saw the line already forming ahead of him. 'Seriously? How early did these guys get here?' Denki could only grit his teeth as he waited in line behind the dozens of others in front.
'Should be allowed to use my quirk to get to the front, now that would be a good use of your quirk.' he thought sourly as he waited, somewhat patiently.
Time passed fairly quickly as all the applicants had already signed up through their schools and were just here to get their number. Soon Denki signed in too and got his number '69'.
Deciding that there was nothing more to do now till the practical tests started he wandered around for a nice spot to rest at. 'Might as well get comfortable, looks like its gonna be a while.'
With that he found a shaded tree out of the way and plonked himself down, admiring the framtic messes of the other kids here hoping to get lucky. 'Seriously, chill guys. If you trained at all then this'll be easy.' he chortled to himself as he saw the nervous wrecks.
"Maybe Im expecting a lil too much from these guys."
The pheromones that wafted off of them barraged his heightened senses. 'Its always the worst emotions that give off the strongest scents' he moaned silently as his nose wrinkled in mild disgust.
Since gainning control over his innate production of electricity, Denki had managed to discover whole new ways to ustilise his quirk. 'to think, I once used it so heavy handedly' he chuckled ruefully.
'Though in moments like these I hate the benefits I've gained' he gagged as more and more nervous and scared people crowded the UA compound, the emotions compounding to become stronger than ever.
Denki finally relented as he desperately toned down his senses with his bio-electricity. "Damn, and some of them should really shower too!"
With his senses dulled he could now relax as he waited out the clock, the time to prove himself would come soon. And prove himself he would.
Nothing would get in his way of him becoming strong. Enough to protect everyone he cares about and making damn sure no kid has to go through what he did. Ever. Again!
