Kapitel 22: Identified?

In the business district's parking lot, Joe focused on the people entering and leaving the nearby office building, waiting for Margaret to come down, completely unaware that he had been exposed.

Going upstairs was impossible.

Even in the 1940s, access to the business district was relatively strict, and it was difficult to blend in without preparation.

So he could only stay in the parking lot.

After about half an hour, Margaret finally came down from upstairs.

But she wasn't the only one coming down.

A spirited old man in his fifties or sixties walked in front of her.

If nothing unexpected happened, this should be the Uncle John that Margaret mentioned.

Margaret followed closely behind him, but what was surprising was that there was a very attentive young man by her side at this time.

And behind the three of them were two cold-faced bodyguards, who were probably their security.

Seeing this scene, Joe, who was monitoring Margaret, quietly took out his camera and took a few pictures.

At this point, Margaret and the others got into a car.

However, Margaret did not drive her own car at this time but followed Uncle John and the attentive young man to another car.

The attentive young man was driving, and Margaret and Uncle John sat in the back seat.

The two bodyguards got into another car and followed them from behind.

After the two cars had driven a certain distance, Joe followed suit and started his car to join them from behind.

Josh, who had noticed this, didn't hesitate and slowly started his car, following from behind.

This was the first time Josh had ever done something like tailing someone, so he was unsure about it.

Fortunately, Joe focused on following Margaret and avoiding being detected by her bodyguards, so he didn't notice Josh behind him.

It was thanks to Tony Wendy's request that Bryan from the Irish gang stepped in as a guarantor and used part of the $1,000 reward to pay off some of the debts, which resulted in the people sent by Scaglione to tail Joe Barbera being withdrawn.

If those people were still tailing him, Josh, who had no experience in following, would have been discovered long ago.

With Josh following behind, they went on for quite a while.

Margaret and her group went to a high-end restaurant for lunch and then went back to the jewelry company to discuss business.

This time, it wasn't until after three o'clock in the afternoon that Margaret was finally sent downstairs by the attentive young man.

After saying goodbye to the young man, Margaret drove away in her own car.

Joe Barbera persisted in following her, and Josh was no exception.

However, this time, it seemed that Margaret was heading towards Josh's house.

And all the way, Joe Barbera was still hanging far behind, seemingly just following without any other intention.

But Josh wasn't going to let him off that easily.

Although it was a satellite city, there was still quite a distance of uninhabited area between Chicago and Evanston, where Josh's house was located.

Of course, there were still quite a few cars on the road.

But compared to the urban area, it was already quite deserted.

In this area, Josh put on his mask, stepped on the gas, caught up with Joe Barbera from the left side, and rammed into him.

Just like in the United States and China, the driver's seat of the car was on the left, so this collision directly hit Joe Barbera's driving position.

The impact sent him flying, and the car lost control and crashed into the farmland on the right side of the road, flipping over in it.

Seeing that he had succeeded with just one hit, Josh didn't hesitate and followed down.

Because it was still late winter, the so-called farmland was just a piece of barren land. The soil was very solid due to the low temperature.

Therefore, Josh calmly drove his car to the overturned car of Joe Barbera.

Joe Barbera in the car wasn't stupid. Even though he was hit and dazed, he was still clever enough to struggle and reach for the gun hidden under the passenger seat.

But before he could grab the gun, a cold, large barrel was already pressed against the back of his head.

Joe Barbera could only raise his hands in despair.

"Get out!" With a light shout, the gun moved slightly away from Joe Barbera's head, but he still dared not make any sudden movements.

Because he knew quite a bit about firearms, based on the touch on the back of his head a moment ago, he could tell that the weapon in the other person's hand was a highly effective close-range killing tool, a shotgun.

At close range, this thing was more effective than any other firearm.

Within ten meters, all living things are equal. It's no joke.

With this thing pointed at him, Joe Barbera had completely given up on any thoughts of resistance and struggled to crawl out of the broken car window.

At this point, quite a few passing cars on the distant road had noticed the situation here.

But when they saw Josh, wearing a mask and holding a shotgun, they all decisively chose to step on the gas and quickly leave.

As for the police, in this era, without cell phones or pagers, it would take at least half an hour for them to receive the alarm and arrive in this remote wilderness.

After Joe Barbera struggled out of the car, he finally saw that the person pointing the gun at him was a tall, thin man wearing a mask.

But why did this mask look so familiar?

"Is it you?" The next second, Joe Barbera recognized the figure and couldn't help but widen his eyes.

There was no way around it, Josh had made too deep an impression on him, and if it weren't for Josh stealing the car, he wouldn't have ended up in his current predicament.

But he didn't expect to be so unlucky as to run into this guy again.

Did he do anything to provoke him?

"Who told you to follow that lady?" But at this moment, Josh had no thoughts of catching up with this guy. He just directly asked.

Hearing Josh's words, Joe Barbera realized that the task Tony Wendys had given him was not as simple as he thought. Otherwise, he wouldn't have attracted this mysterious guy in front of him.

But what was the relationship between this person and the woman he was following?

Suddenly, Joe Barbera thought of the young man he had seen in Evanston when he was following Margaret in the morning...

"Quick, tell me who told you to follow that lady." Josh didn't know that Joe Barbera had already recognized his true identity. When he saw him hesitate, he asked again.

"It was Mr. Tony Wendys who asked me to do it. He asked me to follow Mrs. Wendys, find evidence of her affair, and the identity of her lover..." Faced with the gun, Joe Barbera decisively chose to betray his employer.

People like him didn't have any bottom lines, to begin with. They would do anything if they could survive or make money.

It's just that when he mentioned the lover, there was a subtle change in his tone and a questioning look toward Josh, which Josh noticed.

Did he recognize him? Josh couldn't help but furrow his brow.

Originally, he had only planned to teach this Italian fatso a lesson, find out the reason for following Margaret from his mouth, and had no intention of killing anyone.

But if the other person had really recognized him...

"This, sir, I..." At this point, Joe Barbera still wanted to use words to test Josh.

However...

"Bang!!!"

The sound of a gunshot resounded through the sky.
