Waiting is always torture, no matter who you are.
Time ticked by, second by second, but the surroundings remained completely unchanged.
This growing silence made Fury uneasy.
It had been a long time since he had felt like this, but tonight's silence, instead of bringing peace, only increased the feeling of suffocation.
In his mind, he replayed Arthur's possible approaches and strategies. Every possible defensive measure had already been taken, creating a seemingly perfect 360-degree shield with no gaps.
"He wouldn't just slip away because he couldn't find an opening, would he..."
Fury muttered to himself as he checked the time.
23:50!
Ten minutes left. Fury activated the wireless comms: "All units, report!"
"No anomalies..."
"No anomalies!"
"No anomalies!"
"Tap tap..."
Finally, it was Black Widow's turn to respond. Since she was stationed near the target and they wanted to keep the truth from the key figure, they used a coded signal instead of words.
Two taps meant no anomalies.
But for some reason, Fury grew even more anxious.
No anomalies anywhere- that was perhaps the most frightening anomaly of all!
Still, he couldn't figure out what Arthur's move would be.
Arthur's file played over and over in his mind: Teleportation, the ability to go toe-to-toe with Destroyer, the power to summon that massive three-meter giant... But none of the latter two had anything to do with infiltration.
"Disguise..."
Fury suddenly remembered a strange report Coulson had filed.
When the '084' landed in New Mexico, there was one night when two Coulsons appeared on the base.
One had been knocked unconscious and left outside the camp, while the other tried to pick up the '084!
In the end, he couldn't lift it and disappeared via teleportation...
"It was him!"
Fury's eyes lit up: "The next night, there was a 'Savage' who clashed with Hawkeye using the so-called 'Flash Step' and 'Moon-Fang Heaven Piercer'. That flash step could very well have been teleportation..."
Suddenly, Fury jumped to his feet and rushed to the 'big boss' office.
He arrived to find Coulson standing guard outside the door: "Anyone come in?"
"Yes,"
Coulson replied. "Some officers came in to report on their work. Why?"
"Check everyone who came in." Fury instructed, "But don't let them know the truth."
"Understood." Coulson nodded and went to make the arrangements.
Fury knocked softly and a black-clad agent opened the door. Fury motioned to Black Widow inside.
Black Widow immediately walked over and followed Fury outside, "What happened?"
"Did anyone who came in tonight make physical contact with the 'Big Boss'?"
Black Widow thought for a moment: "Three people..."
She listed their names and then checked the time: "It's time."
It felt as if something had suddenly tightened around Fury's heart. He looked around instinctively, but still saw nothing out of the ordinary.
"Nothing... happened?"
A long sigh of relief escaped him: "Mission accomplished, let's move out."
"Understood."
Black Widow replied and radioed all relevant personnel.
Once the task was completed, she turned back to Fury.
"You all go ahead and leave. I'll report the 'drill results' to the 'big boss'."
Fury's brow relaxed. Although nothing had happened tonight, the mental strain had been immense.
Black Widow nodded, "Take care."
She turned to leave.
"Wait..."
Fury spoke suddenly.
Black Widow froze, a faint, strange smile appearing on her lips. She turned and asked, "What is it?"
"Could you pick him up again tomorrow?"
Fury said.
"Understood."
Black Widow waved her hand and turned to leave.
...
...
At the front gate, the SHIELD agents regrouped. Hawkeye rubbed his eyes and asked, "So nothing happened?"
"That's right," Black Widow replied. "Looks like we overestimated the so-called King of Assassinations."
"Legends are often different from reality," Hawkeye said. "In that case, let's go our separate ways. Care for a drink?"
"I'm a little tired tonight. I'll head back to rest," Black Widow waved him off. "Maybe next time."
"Alright."
Hawkeye didn't press further, and the group dispersed.
Meanwhile, in the office, Fury was giving a formal report on the results of the evening's drill. But just as he finished speaking, his eyes suddenly locked on the chest of the person behind the desk.
After a long moment, his pupils contracted sharply.
The brooch - the brooch was gone!
Who could have taken it and when?
All the possibilities raced through his mind until he suddenly realized something: "Why should he only be able to disguise himself as a man? He can change his entire body shape... Damn it, Natasha!"
Fury fought to keep his composure as he left the office, immediately activating his wireless communication: "Natasha!"
But there was no response.
He quickly pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number.
With the mission complete, everyone's phones should have been turned back on, but there was no answer from Natasha's phone.
The next second he called Hawkeye's phone. Hawkeye sounded confused: "What's wrong?"
"Is Natasha with you?"
"She went back to rest!"
"Damn it!!"
Fury muttered as he walked, "The brooch on the 'Big Boss' is missing. Natasha wouldn't have missed something like that."
"What are you saying?"
"There's a very good chance... Natasha *is* Arthur!"
"That... can't be possible," Hawkeye's voice was filled with disbelief.
But just then, Fury's phone chimed with a notification.
He glanced at the screen and opened the message to find three photos.
The sender had no name, just a string of numbers, but Fury knew it was Arthur.
The photos were all selfies, with the background clearly showing the 'big boss's' office, even showing agents patrolling outside the windows.
Not only that, but each photo was time stamped.
9:30... 10:30... 11:30!
And underneath, a message read: "Do I look good?"
Good? My foot!
Fury wanted to curse out loud, wanted to throw his phone, but he gritted his teeth and ended the call with Hawkeye, then dialed Arthur's number. The moment he connected, he demanded, "Let her go!"
"Haha," Arthur chuckled. "See you tomorrow."
Then he hung up.
...
...
Arthur casually tossed the phone onto the passenger seat and pulled the brooch from his pocket, twirling it between his fingers.
Two and a half hours - he'd had over two and a half hours where no one was paying attention. He could have done anything to send Fury and the others into a panic.
"And all I did was take three selfies and grab a brooch. That's a bargain."
Putting the phone down, Arthur shifted his thoughts and suddenly a woman appeared in the passenger seat next to him.
She was unconscious, wearing nothing but her undergarments. Arthur placed his hand on his chest, and Black Widow's tight suit materialized in his Disassembler space, while he himself changed into a sleek black suit.
His face changed from 'Black Widow' back to his true self, Arthur.
