"How the fuck is this even possible?" Alliana asked. "Well, apparently, since the judge reviewed Carlos's documents, he decided to let Carlos go on probation again until trial, which starts in two weeks after the jury duty notices are sent out," Vex explained.
"Oh," Alliana said. "I bet you didn't see that one coming, princess," I said, unable to resist the opportunity to provoke a reaction from Alliana. Rolling her eyes, Alliana chose not to dignify my joke with a response, instead turning her attention to Montero, who stood nearby with a grin on his face.
"Hey Montero, it's been a long time since we've seen one another. How are you?" I asked, attempting to steer the conversation away from the tense atmosphere that permeated the room. "I've been good, sir. And you?" Montero asked, his grin widening as he exchanged pleasantries with me.
