100% Lizard’s level-up buffet / Chapter 14: Bug

Kapitel 14: Bug

Ellie walked out of the materials warehouse while holding a large bag of coins. Her method of using the inventory to harvest the crystals before they were fully discharged had left a lot of mana inside them. Therefore, they were valuable research materials. She was paid almost 3 times as much for a similarly sized crystal. The currency that she was given sort of looked like a flat donut but with a crystal inside the middle. Ellie could feel subtle waves of mana floating around the coin, as the crystal glowed a gentle white light.

Placing her bag of coins in her inventory, she wandered around town until she found the first building she was able to recognize since she had come to this new world, a library. She had always felt at home in a library, she had a small library in her hometown growing up, and she would spend her summer days reading books obsessively, sometimes forgetting to drink water or eat. As Ellie entered the big, multi-storied library in front of her, a kobold carrying a packet of newspapers dashed through the door and slammed right into her at full speed. The kobold slammed into Ellie so hard it even made an exaggerated slapping noise as it was forcefully stopped in her tracks.

As Ellie bent down and picked up the newspapers she had dropped she asked, "Are you okay?" then, realizing that nobody could understand her, she just sighed, and smacked her forehead in frustration. Surprisingly, however, the kobold actually said something that she could understand back.

"I'm fine, I just wasn't looking where I was going again," the kobold said, making the same lizard noises that come out of Ellie's mouth whenever she tries to speak.

"You can actually understand me!?" Ellie exclaimed, genuinely startled as soon as she responded.

The two of them chatted while picking up newspapers, which took a while, as they had started to blow away in the wind at this point. Ellie learned that the kobold's name was Bug and that she was an advanced student at Eluna's occupational school, which is a school that prepares children or the uneducated for entry into general occupations, by teaching them reading, elven, and math.

"Honestly, I need to go to that school with you, but I'm not sure my mouth can even make any noises except whatever these are." Ellie said, kinda discouraged, as no matter what she did, she couldn't even mimic the noises that she heard other people making when they talked."

"It's a big problem for lizardfolk like us, but it turns out, there is actually a reason for this!" bug exclaimed, happily. "You see, when a creature race like us is born, the magic around us when we are born can sometimes give us magical or physical advantages, however, the world is always fair, and when it gives us stronger and faster bodies, it has to take something away, and what it takes is our ability to communicate. However, all this changes when one of us uses a job crystal and takes up an occupation or class."

"What is a job crystal?" Ellie asked, already deciding in her heart that she would eat one since she really wanted to know what it tasted like.

"I don't really know how it works, but if you use one, you can choose a job or class, which gives you cool skills! It also seems to break our limitations and allows us to start learning other languages. The cool thing is, if you master all your skills, you can pick a cooler job branching off of the first one you picked, so be careful when you first choose, as your future will be affected."

At this point, Bug was jumping around and wildly making hand movements, as she looked as if she was super excited about job crystals and the whole concept of them.

"Come, ill bring you to get a job crystal, and then ill teach you elven if you can find the money to hire me as a tutor! You do have some money, right?"

"I've got plenty, don't worry about that," Ellie said, feeling a heartfelt smile begin to creep up on her face, as Bug's enthusiasm seemed to spread around her like an aura.

Bug dragged Ellie by the hand for about a mile, and they reached a small grey building that seemed to be painted with glitter, as every time Ellie moved, the sunlight reflected off of the walls, sparkling and shifting like the starry sky. Ellie watched as A robed lady out front hauled a big basket of crystals out to the front of the building and poured them into a stone basin sitting near the street.

"Here ya go!" Bug said, plucking a few little crystals out of the basin. "They make hundreds of these a day, and you can just come by to use one whenever you feel like it."

Ellie smoothly ran her hand over the little mountain of crystals, as a single crystal disappeared into her inventory to try and eat later.

Ellie took the crystal from Bug and with her guidance, pressed it against her forehead.

{3 job selections}

{Farmer}

{Worker}

{Knight}

Ellie carefully read through all the illusory text in front of her and finally settled on a job that she felt would allow her the best potential in the future.

(author's note: sorry I was gone for a few weeks, I've got some irl job stuff I had to do.)
