Kapitel 2: New Guardian

I woke up lying next to him, cuddled in his arms. Startled, I yelp, and fell off the cot. "Ow."

I hear him yawn. "Are you okay?" He stares at me from his bed, with a smirk on his face.

I look away from him and get off the floor. "Yes, thank you for asking."

We sat there for a while, in an awkward silence.

"So, would you like to make breakfast?"

I look at the pantry. "Looks like there isn't much to work with. Do you at least have eggs and some vegetables?"

He nods. "From the chickens out back, they should already have been fed. My neighbor takes care of that since I'm usually gone for long periods of time."

He gets up.

I quickly turned around, flushed. I head out to the chicken coop, without saying a word. When I get there, I hesitate. I have never dealt with these creatures before.

They are so small, and have feathers kind of like my wings. Their feet are skinny and a strange color. Just looking at them makes me feel disgusted. "Such repulsive creatures." I have seen these in the information that the higher ups gave, seeing them up close is a different story.

There's a tap on my shoulder. "You okay?"

Out of reflexe, I summon my spear and aim it just below his chin. That's when I realized that it's him.

"So, you're an angel."

Slightly out of breath, I send away my spear. "I am an immortal being, but I am no angel."

I notice that he places a hand on his sword, ready to kill me.

"Show me your wings, then."

I sigh. I stretch out my pitch black feathered wings. "Happy?"

The look on his face is serious, I'm not sure what his intentions are. They better not be what I think they are.

"Are you gonna grab the eggs or what?" He asks, walking past me. He stops for a second. "Oh, I never caught your name."

"Seraph."

He nods. "Clarence. I guess you and I will be getting to know each other during breakfast."

I sigh, I can't believe I blew my cover on the second day. I haven't done that in years. "You're not afraid of me?"

He shakes his head, and picks up eggs from the chickens' nests. "Why would I be? The Lord sent me an Angel, is it because of my gift?"

"You could say that." I can't tell him that I am actually a fallen angel.

He raises an eyebrow at me. "You can't tell me why you're here?"

I shake my head. "Mortals can't know about our existence, so I can't share the details of the task that I was given."

He sighs. "Well, no use in prying. Let's get breakfast made shall we?" He walks with me back to the house, and he shows me how to make what they call omelets. You mix eggs and milk together, put it in a pan and put vegetables in it while it cooks!

He smiles at my fascination. "I thought you Angels watched us humans while in heaven."

I chuckle. "That's what you guys believe?" I shake my head. "We only intervene when we absolutely have to. Most things you have handled on your own."

We put our food on the table and sit down to breakfast.

He places his hands together in prayer. "Dear Lord, thank you for giving us this food, and thank you for sending me an angel. This is a true blessing, Amen."

Great, now I have a headache.

Once the meal is over with, he shows me around the city. I even got a glimpse of the castle.

"Everything seems nice down here, there isn't much in heaven."

"It's okay, I guess. Not really my scenery though."

"No?"

"I prefer the countryside, I love nature and its beauty. I wish that I could be around it all the time. Sadly, surviving on your own is a lot more work than you think."

We walk together in silence for a moment, then he starts talking again.

"Is there anything else you want to see?"

I shake my head. "I don't think so." We head back with a cot for me in tow.

"I'd love to stay, but duty calls, I'll be back at dusk."

I nod. "See you then." Perfect chance to assassinate him, and gain the power of the rings.

I watch him from above, on a rooftop, spear in hand.

He's sparring with the newest recruits for training. He's actually fun to watch. When it looks like he's about to lose, my heart stops for a second.

In a split second, he gains the upper hand and overpowers his trainee.

I shake my head to snap out of my trance, and raise my spear. I aim for his heart, no one will see my spear coming.

All they will know is that he would have a heart attack, and those elemental rings are mine.

Don't do it. That voice from last night echoes in my head.

"Who are you?" I ask.

I am the voice of the Lord.

"God?"

Yes, my child. I cannot meet with you in person, but I will have an angel meet with you soon.

"Wait, why? Why are you talking to me? What do you want from me?"

He doesn't respond. My head is silent.

I collapse to my knees. I look at my hands and they are shaking. Whatever is going on with Clarence, it seems God wants him alive.

Clarence arrives home in the afternoon, I've already gotten his lunch ready. "Hey, sorry to leave you here by yourself." He looks me up and down. "What's wrong, did something happen?"

"It's nothing."

He walks up to me, and caresses my cheek. "Then why are you crying?"

To my surprise, tears fell from my eyes, dripping onto the floor.

He wipes them away, and wraps his arms around me in comfort. "I know we haven't exactly known each other for very long. And you're an angel for that matter. But you can always confide in me, if you need to talk things out."

I guess, it will be okay to tell him the truth. "Promise me, you won't run off?"

"Of course."

He says that now.

I release my dark wings. "I'm not an angel, I'm a fallen."

He releases me and stands back.

"I have been sent to kill you, and gain your power so we can be one with God again."

He instantly draws his sword and points it at me. "I may never win against you, but I will fight until my final breath."

"Please, just let me finish…"

He steps back, sword still drawn. "Go on."

"You see, there's this voice in my head. I don't know who it is, but my instincts tell me that it's God himself. He wants you alive, but I don't know why. So, all I can do is protect you until I know what's going on."

He sheaths his sword, and takes a step forward. "So, what you're telling me is, you are now my guardian and not my killer?"

I nod. "From this day forth," I stand in front of him, placing my pale hand on his chest. "I, Seraph, the Fallen One, shall protect you with all of my being. I vow to do what is necessary to preserve your soul, for the sake of my only Lord." I wait for the pain to start, but it doesn't. Instead, my hand glows brightly. A rare Holy light appears on his chest, next to his heart.

"It's warm."

"This will leave a mark on your chest, it ties me to you. So, as your new guardian I must do as I am told. My life is yours to use as you see fit, I will protect you with all of my power."

We are silent for a while.

"Just know, people will see me now. I'm not sure what we are going to say…but I'm sure we will think of something."

The light fades, and he takes of shirt as fast as he can. "Why is there a symbol of the Devil on here?"
