"Alright," I muttered to myself, adjusting my binoculars while perched on the rooftop of a nearby building. Below, the new SHIELD facility stood, bristling with activity. Armed guards patrolled every corner, their body armor gleaming in the sunlight. I scanned the area, the heat from the sun making the wait feel even longer.
After about an hour, my patience was rewarded. A familiar figure stepped out of a black SUV—Phil Coulson. Dressed sharply in a suit and sunglasses, he looked just as I remembered from the movies, though younger and more energetic. He exchanged brief words with a colleague before heading toward the building that housed the hammer.
The hammer. Mjölnir. The mystical artifact I had no delusions of lifting. I'd briefly entertained the idea of letting Fiend—my impish goblin companion—take a nibble. His ability to absorb and grow from consuming materials was tempting, but feeding him something of that magnitude required resources I didn't yet have. Besides, the Fiend I summoned wasn't even at full potential and trying to mess with an Asgardian artifact seemed like asking for trouble.
I rubbed the bridge of my nose, collecting my thoughts. "Alright, time to move."
Activating [Shadow Step], I felt my body dissolve into darkness, reappearing on the rooftop of the SHIELD facility. With a thought, I summoned [Definitely Not Me], the enchanted mask fitting snugly onto my face. Its illusionary properties flickered to life. in Turne myself intangible like a shadow and gliding through shadows and walls, avoiding detection as I searched for my target. Coulson was my main objective—his SHIELD credentials would be the key to accessing their databases and uncovering the information I desperately needed about this world and its inhabitants.
After searching for about a minute, I finally found Phil Coulson sitting alone, leaning against a wall and focused on the tablet in his hand. Without hesitation, I quickly attached myself to his shadow. He didn't notice a thing.
Now, it was just a waiting game. All I needed was for him to head back to his home, where I could knock him out and use his device to uncover the information I was after. Patience, I thought. This would all be worth it.
"Ah, aha, finally, now we're getting somewhere," I thought to myself as Phil finally made his way to his "place." Most of my time had been spent watching him move from one person to another, discussing things that were utterly useless to me.
Seriously, what should I do with knowing how many rats are in New York or someone's favorite food?
I shook off the frustration as Phil entered his room. It was sparsely furnished, containing only the essentials—a bed, a small table, and a few other items. He moved toward the small table on the right, sat down, and pulled a laptop out of his bag.
He entered his password, and the screen lit up.
"Now's my chance," I thought, immediately turning intangible. Without hesitation, I punch him in the face hard before he could even react.
The punch knocked the lights out of Phil. I grabbed his unconscious body from the chair and carefully placed him on the bed. With that done, I turned my attention to the laptop, eager to extract the information I needed.
My first priority was finding out more about the body I was inhabiting. Using various search terms—gender, age, hair color, and other details—I finally came across the file I was looking for.
And I wasn't happy.
In this world, my name was Tess Walker, age 17. My family had died in a car accident, leaving me an orphan. After their passing, I had been placed under the care of my uncle. My parents had left behind a hefty inheritance—20 million dollars, to be exact—which my uncle was managing on my behalf.
The kicker? I had "disappeared" five months ago, leaving my uncle in charge of the inheritance.
I leaned back in Phil's chair, processing the information.
Despite the heavy backstory, a grin tugged at the corners of my mouth. This was shaping up to be a tangled mess, and strangely, I couldn't help but feel a spark of excitement.
"This is going to be fun," I murmured, my smile widening as the laptop's glow illuminated my face.
