'Ugh... seriously?'
The young man—no, the slime—thought as he caught his reflection in a small puddle of water.
In that reflection, he saw what he'd become: a small, fist-sized blob of pitch-black goo. His body was almost liquid, its surface shifting constantly like oil on water, rippling and stretching with every slight movement. There were no eyes, no mouth, no clear features—just an amorphous mass of dark slime that wobbled whenever he tried to move. The blackness of his form seemed to absorb light, making him blend into the shadows around him. If someone wasn't paying attention, they might not even notice him.
He hadn't expected to reincarnate as something so... basic. Maybe he'd done too many bad things in his past life to deserve a better form.
'Ah, well…' he sighed, if a slime could even sigh. Resigning himself to his new body, he tried to think positively. A slime is a slime. Look at Rimuru—he became the strongest, even as a slime. But he knew that was because Rimuru was the protagonist. Anyone else? They'd probably have died before getting anywhere.
He had no idea what kind of world this was, but he could guess it was one where humans and all sorts of non-human races coexisted.
'Hello? System? Cheat? Golden finger? You can show up anytime now.' the black slime thought, remembering all those fantasy novels he'd read in his previous life.
Usually, a reincarnator would get some kind of cheat—either a system or some overpowered ability to help them become the strongest.
He waited a few seconds but... no response. Well, he'd kind of expected that. Those kinds of powers usually went to the protagonist, and clearly, he wasn't one of them.
Sighing mentally, he gave up on the idea of having a golden finger and focused on his surroundings instead.
It was weird. Even though he didn't have eyes, he could see everything around him clearly. Not only that, but he could also sense the concentration of mana flowing through the area. Hm… in Tensura terms, it seemed like he was born with Mana Perception.
'Bat corpse?' He thought, spotting a dead bat not far from him. Suddenly, a wave of hunger hit him, and without thinking, he started moving toward the corpse. He really wanted to eat it.
As he reached the bat corpse, the slime hesitated for a moment. Eating a raw, dead bat sounded pretty disgusting, even for his new slime body. But the hunger gnawing at him was impossible to ignore. Besides, he wasn't human anymore—might as well embrace what monsters do.
'Alright, let's get this over with.' he thought, steeling himself. Then, without any further hesitation, he engulfed the bat with his liquid body, absorbing it. Surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as he imagined.
'Huh, not bad at all!' the black slime thought as he devoured the bat. He couldn't explain it, but somehow he could "sense" the taste. It was weird, but the bat was… good?
As the bat's body dissolved into him, a voice suddenly echoed in his mind.
[Common Skill [Echolocation] has been acquired.]
[Common Skill [Paralysis Poison] has been acquired.]
[Trait [Enhanced Hearing] has been acquired.]
"Whoa! What's this? Wait, I can talk now?!" The slime's shock at hearing the voice caused him to speak out loud. And that surprised him even more—he'd tried talking before but couldn't make a sound. Yet now, his voice came out clear as day. It was the same voice he'd had in his previous life, so it didn't feel weird at all.
"It must be because of that new skill, Echolocation." He realized, testing his voice again with a mutter, "Hello?" Yep, still the same voice.
But what really got him excited was the voice in his head. He recognized it—it was familiar, like something from one of the shows he used to watch. He remembered it vividly from Tensura.
"Great Sage?" He asked, half expecting an answer.
"..."
He waited for a few seconds, but no answer came. It wasn't the Great Sage—it was the Voice of the World. Could it be? Was he actually in that universe?
'Is this really the world of Tensura?' He thought, his curiosity and excitement growing. If it was, things just got a whole lot more interesting. Sure, the world was cool, but also dangerous as hell. Demon Lords, True Dragons, True Heroes—none of those were beings he could mess with. And then there were Angels, Demons, and all sorts of other powerful races roaming around.
Still, the possibilities were endless if this really was Tensura.
'I need to play it smart.' He thought, trying to contain his excitement. The world of Tensura was a place where weaklings didn't last long.
"Status?" He tried again, hoping for better results. He was eager to see his current stats. This time, his expectations were met as a black, transparent status window appeared in front of him.

'Everything looks pretty normal.' He thought, scanning through the list. It seemed he didn't even have a name yet. He didn't really feel like using his name from his past life either. He was a new entity now—might as well start fresh.
It seemed like he had quite an impressive array of skills for a slime. Maybe it was because he was a variant of a slime and slightly stronger than others.
For Resist Skills, the categories were as follows: Reduction, Tolerance, Resistance, Immunity, and Nullification. Reduction provided a 25% reduction, Tolerance offered 50%, Resistance gave 75%, Immunity granted 90%, and Nullification achieved 100%.
'Hmm?' His thoughts were interrupted as a flood of memories suddenly rushed into his mind. It wasn't painful, just... strange. Like watching a movie, but fast-forwarded a thousand times over.
'Interesting.' He thought, realizing it must be due to his [Memory Reading] skill, which let him absorb the memories of everything he devoured.
Meanwhile, the Absorption skill seemed to be similar to the one Rou had in Re:Monster, but with a slight improvement.
Not only did it make the things he ate feel more satisfying, but it also allowed him to gain the memories and skills of whatever he devoured. Because he had eaten a simple bat, he only gained Echolocation. The Paralysis Poison, however, was a bonus, likely due to the fact the bat had died from being stung by an insect with that ability.
'So, I can gain the skills and memories of anything I eat... that's pretty useful.' He mused, already thinking of how to put this skill to good use.
Unfortunately, from the bat's memories, he discovered that no monsters inhabited this cave—just normal creatures with dangerous abilities, like the poisonous insect that had killed the bat. Most of the cave's residents were poisonous insects, bats, rats, and the occasional lizards.
'So, no monsters... just a bunch of creepy crawlies.' He thought, feeling a bit disappointed. It also seemed that no humans had entered this cave for years, and it was situated on a mountain. Near the mountain, there was a small human village, but it was filled with ordinary farmers.
'A quiet place, huh? Could be worse.' He mused. At least there weren't any big threats around, but that also meant no strong monsters to gain abilities from.
Since he was the only monster in the cave, he decided to explore and, well, "clean up" the place. After devouring the bat, his body had grown to about the size of one, so it wasn't too hard to go after more bats and insects. He slithered around, absorbing anything that came into his path—small bats, venomous bugs, whatever he could find.
'Might as well get stronger while I'm at it.' He thought, feeling his body expand bit by bit with each new meal. Even though they were just small creatures, he could sense himself growing more powerful with each one he consumed. It was a slow process, but progress was progress.

Four hours later, the cave was finally "cleaned." No other creatures were left. From eating the lizards, he gained a couple of useful Common Skills: [Aquatic Movement], which made it easier for him to move through water, and [Thermal Regulation], which automatically adjusted his body's humidity to match the environment.
His [Paralysis Poison] had also grown stronger after devouring so many poisonous insects. Now, his size had increased to that of a medium-sized dog, thanks to all the bats and lizards he'd eaten.
'Not bad, not bad at all.' He thought, feeling his body stretch a little more with each meal.
As he explored deeper into the cave, he found out something interesting: this place had once been a mithril mine. But after the mithril ran out, it had been abandoned, which explained why no humans had entered for years.
'Makes sense.' He thought, stumbling across a chunk of mithril left behind. Without a second thought, he devoured it. He had a theory—if he could absorb skills from living creatures, maybe non-living things worked the same way.
And his guess turned out to be right.
Two Extra Skills appeared: [Mineral Coating], which allowed him to coat his body with any mineral he consumed, and [Mana Conduit], a skill that let him absorb mana from the surroundings and store it within his body. The amount of mana he could hold depended on his internal size.
'Hmm, with my current size, my mana capacity isn't great... but the Mineral Coating is a win.' He thought, examining his new form. Mithril was famous for being both incredibly strong and lighter than steel. With this coating, his defense had skyrocketed.
When he said there were no monsters in the cave, that was based on the bat's memories. But after he ventured into the deeper parts, he realized there were actually many vengeful spirits lingering there. The bat hadn't been able to see them because it didn't have [Mana Perception], but he did.
'So, this is what was hiding here.' He thought as he gazed at the eerie figures floating around.
Curious, he decided to try devouring one of the spirits. To his surprise, it worked. His body, now a [Mana Conduit], allowed him to consume creatures made of souls and spiritual energy too.
'That's... pretty useful.' He mused as three new skills appeared: the Extra Skill [Fear Eater], which let him grow stronger by absorbing the fear of his enemies, and the Common Skill [Ghost Cry], a skill that inflicted fear on others. These would definitely come in handy.
The last one was a pretty useful Extra Skill called [Astral Form]. It let him shift into an astral state, making him immune to regular physical attacks, though mana-based attacks could still hurt him.
With the cave thoroughly "cleaned", he decided it was time to leave and explore the world outside. He still wasn't sure if he was in the world of Tensura or somewhere else. The power system shown to him was more reminiscent of Re:Monster, leaving him unsure of what to expect.
'Well, I'm not strong enough to take on anything big yet, but I'm a lot stronger than when I first got here.' He thought, feeling a sense of accomplishment. He had come a long way in such a short time.
Reaching the cave's entrance, he paused. Outside, several wild dogs were prowling around, clearly hunting for food. They weren't a pack, just scavengers drawn to the abandoned mine. Without humans around, they roamed freely, sometimes even sneaking into the nearby village to steal livestock—cows, pigs, chickens, whatever they could find.
"Taking them all on head-on might be tough." The slime muttered to himself, eyeing the wild dogs. They were spread out around the entrance, blocking his way forward. This wouldn't be easy, but he wasn't about to turn back now.
For some reason, one of the wild dogs wandered into the cave, maybe searching for lizards to hunt. He quickly hid himself behind a rock near the entrance, waiting for the right moment.
