Chapter 93: Opportunity
Finally, the second day arrived, and the four heads of the three people and a cat were huddled together, looking curiously at the front page headlines of the latest issue of the newspaper.
"Sun Pirates Captain, 'Knight of the Sea' Jinbe, Invited to Become One of the Seven Warlords!"
"It's indeed about this matter. The proposal should have been made a long time ago, and it's only finalized now," Adrian reached out to help Tom reshape his flattened head.
Tom's head was surprisingly malleable, whether squeezed round or flattened, or even molded into a donkey head, it was all possible, more entertaining than playdough.
Tom pushed away Adrian's mischievous hands that were attempting to reshape his head and patted it twice to restore its original shape.
"Does this Jinbe have any connection with that Rear Admiral?" Rui Mengmeng asked.
Adrian explained, "Oh, you weren't here at the time. That Rear Admiral mentioned before that his subordinates sacrificed themselves attacking this pirate crew, but the original criminals suddenly became legitimate pirates, so it was hard for him to accept."
"It does seem quite unfair."
Adrian added, "However, his task at the time was to rescue the slaves who were captured, so in a way, it wasn't honorable. He and his subordinates were deceived by the Celestial Dragons and the World Government."
"So, in that incident, the pirates weren't completely wrong, and the navy wasn't completely right either? The relationship is so complex."
"It's about right. In the news, after Jinbe became one of the Seven Warlords, all members of the Sun Pirates can restore their civilian identities as they wish, and the members who were captured will also be released. These days, Rear Admiral Kadarro and the others are probably busy with these matters. It's truly torment for him."
Adrian remembered that Arlong had been released in a similar way. Maybe he should inquire about the meeting place and then take care of him on the way? But maybe not, Arlong was innocent now, and if he were to take action before he set sail with his own pirate crew, Adrian would become the criminal. That would be really disgusting.
"Forget about that for now. We haven't caught the person plotting against us yet. Let's continue with our fishing plan today."
It had been five days since they dealt with those organ traffickers, and there had been no movement at all. They couldn't just give up, could they?
Adrian, who was still full of doubts, took Tom out alone today, with Artoria secretly following them as usual.
Unfortunately, from morning until noon, nothing happened.
During the lunch break, the headline naturally became the topic of discussion.
Some people believed that the Seven Warlords were a force under the World Government's command that could reduce the number of pirates.
Others believed that adding another "legal pirate" wasn't a good thing.
Among them was Goodman, the uncle who visited Adrian's place occasionally: "Kid, did you see today's news?"
"You mean the Seven Warlords thing? Yeah, I saw it," Adrian first placed two plates of cold dishes in front of him and watched him eat a little before pouring a bottle of low-proof, flavorful wine.
Mrs. Molly had quietly told him last time that if Goodman came to drink here, he should take care of him a bit. It's really enviable how close they are.
Goodman picked up the wine glass and drank it in one gulp, "Sigh, another big pirate who can legally plunder. I wonder what will happen to this island."
Adrian said, "Whether he becomes a Seven Warlord or not shouldn't matter much to us common people, right?"
Goodman said, "But he's a fish-man, you know how fish-men are treated on this island. He might take the opportunity to seek revenge."
If someone with Arlong's personality became a Seven Warlord, he might really cause trouble, like destroying Cocoyashi Park or something. But Jinbe probably wouldn't do such things.
That chubby blue fish-man had been working hard all his life to protect Fish-Man Island, and he wouldn't do something that would increase the resentment of regular people towards fish-men.
Adrian pondered for a moment and asked, "Uncle, do you also have a prejudice against fish-men?"
Goodman gave him a strange look, "Of course not. I'm a shipwright."
"What does that have to do with being a shipwright?"
"The world's greatest shipwright, Mr. Tom, is a fish-man. How could I easily dislike fish-men?"
"I'm not talking about you." Adrian pushed Tom back into his shirt.
Goodman continued, "Kid, don't hold biases like some people do. Just like humans, fish-men have both good and bad. We only mostly hear about fish-man pirates' affairs, so that's why we have such a fierce and brutal impression."
Adrian nodded. Goodman was a sensible person. Most kind-hearted fish-men lived quietly on Fish-Man Island, and even if they floated up to see the outside world like Kamy did, they did so in secret.
The troublemakers who became pirates were not the well-behaved ones.
"Uncle, if, and I mean if, you encounter fierce fish-man pirates or something, remember to give me a call, okay?" Adrian said, "Our tavern's guards are really strong. One person can take on dozens."
"Hahaha, you don't need to worry about me. Those shipyard workers of ours aren't easy to mess with either. When I think back to my younger days, taking on dozens of people was nothing."
Goodman thought, even if he had to use the Den Den Mushi to call for help, he would call the navy for assistance. Oh right, he also needed to call Kid and tell them to be ready for evacuation at any time.
Adrian noticed he wasn't paying full attention and felt a bit anxious. The members of the Arlong Pirates were said to have physical strength ten times that of a human... However, the shipyard workers here weren't ordinary shipyard workers, and in terms of strength, they probably weren't weaker than regular fish-men.
If Arlong's crew dared to cause trouble here, even those few high-ranking members might end up being killed.
"Just in case, let's continue to exercise by the seaside for these two days. It feels like Goodman is setting up a flag," Adrian made a decision. This way, they could also create more opportunities for the person plotting against him. It's really considerate.
"Uncle, you've already had quite a bit to drink."
"It's just a little wine. Kid, why are you becoming as verbose as Molly?"
"Oh, I'll relay your words to her exactly as you said."
"Better not..."
...
Two days later, in the morning, Tom lay on a beach chair with a fishing rod, yawning. Since it was still early, the warm sunlight spilled over Tom, making him feel a bit drowsy.
But the crackling noise next to him prevented Tom from
falling asleep. It was Adrian and Rui Mengmeng sparring with bamboo swords.
"Smack!" The bamboo sword in Rui Mengmeng's hand snapped in the middle, and they temporarily stopped.
"Snapped again." Adrian sighed, "Do you want to switch to real swords?"
Their strength had increased quite a bit recently. Regular bamboo swords could only be used to practice techniques, as they easily snapped when used with full force. He used to think they were quite resilient.
However, using real swords against each other was a bit restrained, and the training effect wasn't great. It was really frustrating.
Tom was equally frustrated. He supported his cheek and tapped the armrest of the chair with a few fingers in sequence.
Because the broken sword flew towards him once again and hit his head, damn it, he had changed places several times, but no matter whose broken sword it was, it seemed to be targeting him specifically. They always managed to hit him precisely.
Tom rolled his eyes and looked at the Himalayas that had been knocked on his head, feeling like crying from the unfairness.
"Boing boing boing... Ka-cha."
Adrian took out a Den Den Mushi from his clothes and answered the call. Camie's voice came through: "Big Brother Adrian, it's me, Camie. I've sneaked out again. Can I come over to play with you guys?"
