It was supposed to be a routine patrol. But just one hour into our patrol, our convoy is ambushed by the Taliban.
A convoy of 100 men initially. Now in just one minute, no more than 30 men are left.
We were passing through the marketplace of a small town, like hundreds of times before, But today the market was silent.
We thought that it was silent, because we were sent on patrol during their time of prayer, and that everyone would be at home or at the mosques praying.
But we were wrong, very wrong.
When we were right in the center of the marketplace, out of nowhere, the lead car just exploded, with an explosion so powerful that it sent the remains of the vehicle at least 20 meters into the air.
The vehicle in question was a MaxxPro. It was supposed to be a mine resistant vehicle, but now, it was a pile of scrap 20 meters into the air with all 10 men inside dead.
Then another explosion happened, this time at the end of the convoy.
Another MaxxPro 20 meters into the air, on fire and with all the soldiers inside dead.
Just like that, we had just lost 20 good men in a blink of an eye.
Now with the remaining of both MaxxPros and a massive crater blocking out, our way forwards and backwards, we were trapped.
And in the moment of confusion, they appeared.
Hundreds of Taliban soldiers just appeared out of nowhere and started shooting with their AK-47s. Of Course that did nothing against our armor vehicles, but when they started to shoot RPGs by the dozens, that's when I started to get worried.
"Gunner, enemies at 10 o'clock, give them hell." I said to my gunner.
TUTUTUTUTU TUTUTUTU TUTUTUTU TUTUTUTUTUTUT
As my gunner was shooting, another soldier in the same vehicle as me asked.
"Sir, what do we do? We are surrounded by hundreds of them!" He said, clearly in panic.
"Well for starters shoot back you moron." I said while opening my door just enough to stick my barrel out and then started to shoot back killing 5 taliban on our 2 o'clock.
BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG
After hearing me, the rest of the men except the driver and the gunner, got out of the vehicle to start to fire back at our enemy.
TUTUTUTUTU…
After noticing that the 50.cal machine gun on top had gone silent. I called the gunner.
"JOHN, WHY DID YOU STOP SHOOTING?" I screamed and pulled his leg to get his attention.
But when I pulled his leg, his body came falling inside of the MaxxPro like a puppet that had his strings cut, with two bullet wounds. One in his forehead and the other on his throat.
I checked his pulse but he was already dead.
"Fuck. Our Gunner is dead." I said to my driver
"Fuck. Today just couldn't get any wor…" Those were the last words of my driver before an RPG rocket hit the drivers door and obliterated him completely and sent me flying unconscious out of the vehicle into the street.
When I opened my eyes, I felt that I was being dragged so my hand went immediately to my sidearm but then I heard a voice call my name.
"Sir, it's me sir. Private Jack."
Seeing that it was not the enemy I relaxed just a bit. And then ask, how long was I out and how's our situation.
"How long has it been since I was knocked out and how's our current situation?" I ask with my head bleeding.
"It was only about one minute sir, and we are in a dire situation. We got 70 KIA and of the remaining 30 half are severely injured and can't fight back , sir."
"Shit. Lets first get out of the middle of th…" As I was saying this another soldier beside us both fell backwards like a puppet with no more strings attached to him.
We both knew that he was dead.
"Fuck. Have we informed base about our situation?" I asked in desperation.
"Yes sir. Air support is 5 minutes out and reinforcements are less than 10 minutes out."
"Fuck. That's too long. We don't have 5 minutes mutch less 10. We need to get out of the middle of the street NOW." I said.
As I was surveying the battlefield I could see dozens and dozens of my men on the street dead, some without body parts and with their guts out. While some were filled with bullet wounds.
But I could also see hundreds of Taliban insurgents lying dead on the street with their bodies in similar ways.
Then I saw a semi-opened shop, but it was mostly intact.
"THERE, THAT SHOP. We must go to that shop and bunker down if we want any hope to survive to live another day." I said to my man.
"What about the injured, sir, those that can't move?" Private Jack asked.
"Then we have to drag them with us. On the count to 3 everyone starts to put suppressing fire while the medics drag the injured that can't mode inside the shop.
Those that are injured but can still use a weapon, then pick a weapon and fire at the enemy. We are marines and just because we got kissed by the enemy's bullets, that doesn't mean that we can sit on the ground and cry.
NO, WE ARE MARINES AND IF WE ARE GOING TO DIE THEM WE ARE GOING TO DIE WHILE FIGHTING BACK."
"1…"
"2…"
"3 GO GO GO MOVE YOUR ASS. EVERYONE. SUPPRESSING FIRE!!!"
And just like that dozens of rifles started to fire at anything that moved while the medics dragged 2 soldiers at the same time.
After a few seconds all medics and injured soldiers were inside the shop.
"OK BOYS. NOW IS OUR TURN. ON THE COUNT TO 3."
"1…"
"2…"
"3 GO GO GO. EVERYONE. GOOOOO '' I shouted as I ran while shooting, to the shop to get too cover.
But just as I was halfway there I was hit with something on the side of my body and I fell to the ground face first.
Thankfully two of my soldiers saw what happened and came back to pick me up and take me inside the shop.
"MEDIC. MEDIC. WE NEED A MEDIC THE MAJOR WAS HIT!" One of the soldiers shouted. And after a few seconds a medic appeared beside me, but he had a very grime face.
"Fuck. I'm sorry Sir but the bullet hit your liver. There's nothing I can do except try and stop your bleeding." The medic said in a panic voice.
As I started to lose my conscience I muttered a few more words.
"Shit, so this is it huh *cough cough* medic, please. If you boys are able to make it out, please give it to my family." I said while taking a letter out of my pocket with a family picture attached to it.
"Please, tell them that I love them. Please tell my kids that their dad died smiling and that he will be watching over them from up there. Can you deliver my message doc?" I said this last part while crying my eyes out.
"Sir, yes sir. You don't have to worry sir, I'll make sure that they are delivered to them. You can go and take a rest if you want." He said while crying.
"Yeah, i'll take a small rest so, you boys… don't worry… about … me… " I was able to mutter before everything went dark, like the end of a movie.
