By mid-November, the North Sea was frequently lashed by strong winds and battered by high seas, making it treacherous for most ships to navigate. Aside from the occasional naval patrols and privateers, who had fled in a panic earlier and were now daring enough to risk their lives along the coastline, any pirate vessel smaller than a fourth-rate ship attempting to sail at this time was effectively placing its life in the hands of the Grim Reaper.

On this particular day, a three-masted ship bearing a black flag emblazoned with a blood-red cross of the Kingdom of England appeared silently on the roiling sea. It harnessed the fierce, cold tailwind, slicing through the waves with a speed unmatched by other pirate vessels of the time.
