As I’d expected, it was from my son.

Jamie and I had kept a close relationship over the years. He’d finished his schooling at Eton, then elected to continue his education at Stanford. He’d graduated from law school two years before, passed the bar, and was now a practicing attorney.

I couldn’t help smiling at that. Whenever my son felt I could use a little humour, he would call me “Pater.”

I’m so sorry about Aunt Pamela. On the rare occasions I saw her, she was always kind to me. She deserved better than Haynsworth, and I know we’d all hoped she’d found someone who cared about her. I imagine St John was quite upset about it, although I don’t doubt Garrick couldn’t care less—he is his father’s son.

At any rate, go easy on the pretzels and peanut butter. I plan to take you out to dinner. How does the Hollywood Brown Derby sound? Say around eight? I can’t wait for you to meet Brook!
