Kapitel 2: Take me to your home

The quiet of the night deepened as Jay and Kakashi made their way through the winding streets of the Hidden Leaf Village, each step bringing them closer to what would become a pivotal meeting. Kakashi, usually solitary by nature, couldn't help but steal glances at the mysterious boy trotting beside him. The soft moonlight seemed to accentuate Jay's ethereal features, making him appear even more otherworldly and strangely captivating.

As they approached a modest but well-kept house, Kakashi paused at the gate, his hand lingering on the latch. "This is my home," he said, his voice a mix of reluctance and resignation. He wasn't accustomed to bringing strangers here, especially not ones wrapped in mystery. Yet, here he was, about to introduce this enchanting child to his father.

Kakashi pushed open the gate, leading Jay into the small garden that fronted their home. The night's silence was broken only by the distant hooting of an owl and the rustle of leaves underfoot. Inside, the house was dimly lit, warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the cool blue of the night outside.

Sakumo Hatake, Kakashi's father and a respected figure in the village, was still awake, seated in the living room with a book in hand. He looked up as the two entered, his sharp gaze quickly softening as it landed on Jay. "And who do we have here?" Sakumo asked, setting his book aside.

Kakashi hesitated, his earlier suspicions momentarily forgotten in the comfort of his home. "This is Jay," he finally said. "He…he's lost. I found him in the village."

Sakumo studied Jay, his experienced eyes searching for any hint of deceit or danger. Yet, all he saw was a remarkably beautiful child with an aura of innocence that seemed almost too perfect. "Welcome, Jay," Sakumo said warmly. "You're safe here. We'll figure out where you belong in the morning."

Jay responded with a grateful nod, his eyes wide and seemingly filled with relief. "Thank you, sir," he said, his voice dripping with calculated sweetness. Inside, however, his mind was racing. This was going better than he had anticipated. He had expected more resistance, more questioning. But it seemed the Hatake were as noble as they were reputed to be, which could work to his advantage.

As Sakumo invited Jay to sit, the boy made a show of looking around, feigning awe at the simple, yet warm decor. "It's really nice here," he commented, his tone genuine-sounding to the untrained ear.

Kakashi watched from a distance, his mind a tumult of emotions. Part of him wanted to believe in this strange boy's innocence, but another part— a part honed by years of shinobi training—whispered that not all was as it seemed. Yet, as he observed Jay interacting with his father, Kakashi couldn't deny the protective feelings that began to stir within him.

Before long, Sakumo declared it was time for bed. "We have spare futons. Kakashi, would you set one up for our guest?" he instructed.

As Kakashi led Jay to the guest room, setting up a futon with practiced ease, Jay continued his performance of the grateful, awe-struck child. But as Kakashi's hands busied themselves with the bedding, Jay's thoughts were elsewhere. His eyes, hidden under heavy lids, watched Kakashi intently. Each movement, each subtle sign of this young shinobi's character, was cataloged, analyzed.

Kakashi, feeling Jay's gaze, looked up. Their eyes met, and for a moment, there was a silent acknowledgment of something undefined— connection, perhaps, or the beginning of one.

"Goodnight, Jay," Kakashi said softly, unsure why he felt compelled to add, "Sleep well."

"Goodnight, Kakashi," Jay returned, his voice low and smooth.

As the door closed behind Kakashi, Jay lay back on the futon, a smile creeping across his face. This was just the beginning, he thought. Just the beginning of a very interesting game.
