Kapitel 60: Chapter 60: Unlock

The mutated wild boar stared at Logan, its blood-red eyes seemingly able to evoke the deepest fears hidden within.

Logan tightened his grip on the knife in his hand. Mutant beasts not only had stronger defenses compared to normal animals but were also superior in strength, speed, and intelligence.

In his previous life, Logan and Zach had once teamed up with others to kill a mutant beast. However, a dispute about the allocation of the loot nearly got Zach killed by their supposed allies. After that, Zach refused to hunt mutant beasts again. At that time, Logan had no chance of defeating a mutant beast alone, and he too gave up on hunting.

Facing another mutant beast in this life, it was impossible for Logan to feel no tension. But this time, he wasn't the penniless man armed with nothing but a knife.

Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he willed the knife in his hand back into his storage space. In its place, a black weapon appeared in his grip—the crossbow.

Although a gun had a faster firing rate, the crossbow was far more powerful at close range. Wild boars were known for their thick hides, and Logan knew he needed that extra power. The crossbow was capable of shattering an elephant's skull within 150 meters, which is a solid testament to its lethal force.

As soon as the crossbow appeared in Logan's hands, the mutated boar seemed to sense the threat and charged straight at him.

Logan quickly aimed the crossbow.

Just as he was lining up his shot, the Cornucopia interface, dormant for so long, suddenly activated with new information:

[A first-stage source beast has been detected. Please kill the source beast and acquire its source energy.]

"Source beast?"

"Source energy?"

Logan was momentarily stunned.

In that brief second of distraction, the boar had already halved the distance between them, the stench of its breath almost palpable.

Snapping back to reality, Logan hurriedly aimed and fired.

The shot was rushed, and while it pierced the boar's snout and exited through its lower jaw, it missed the intended weak spot in between the boar's eyes.

The arrow merely sealed the boar's mouth, a wound that only served to enrage it further. It let out a furious roar, its blood-red eyes glowing even brighter, as it charged at Logan with even greater speed.

There was no time for a second shot. Logan swiftly retracted the crossbow and rolled to the side, narrowly dodging the boar's charge.

Against a mutant beast like this, being hit even once would mean instant defeat. Its sharp tusks could easily pierce a human body, and the force of its charge would turn internal organs to mush.

The boar ran another ten meters before skidding to a stop, turning back to face Logan for another attack.

Logan sprang to his feet, and by the time he was upright, a knife had appeared in his hand once more.

At this point, only ten meters separated Logan and the boar—a distance that the beast could close in the blink of an eye.

The boar charged again.

As it neared, the sheer size of the boar became even more imposing, its tusks seemingly right in front of Logan.

Feeling the danger closing in, Logan's heart raced, his adrenaline surged, yet his gaze grew more focused.

Just as the boar was about to crash into him, Logan sidestepped swiftly, slashing his knife across its side. The blade left a deep, half-meter-long gash, and blood splattered everywhere.

Yet Logan remained grim-faced. He knew that despite the dramatic wound, the cut had only penetrated the boar's hide and a little flesh. For a beast of this size, such a wound was far from fatal.

In fact, the force of the slash caused Logan's hand to split open at the grip with blood oozing out.

If it had been an ordinary boar, this slash would have disemboweled it. The fact that the mutant boar's defenses were so strong demonstrated just how tough it was.

The injured boar roared in pain, its anger intensifying as it turned again to charge at Logan.

Sweat dripped from Logan's palms as he tightened his grip on the knife.

The boar's speed was so fast that evasion seemed almost impossible.

Logan made a split-second decision—he would fight.

His face set with determination, Logan advanced toward the charging boar rather than retreating.

The boar's hulking form loomed larger with every passing second, its deadly tusks gleaming in the sunlight.

As the intense threat of death loomed, Logan felt his heart race and his adrenaline peak. In that instant, something inside him seemed to be triggered.

Suddenly, the boar's movements slowed, and everything around him seemed to move in slow motion.

Logan's mind flooded with memories of all the combat techniques and strategies he had ever learned.

His brain entered a turbo mode.

Current wind speed: 4 m/s, northeast direction.

The slope of the cement road: 27.6 degrees.

Mutant boar speed: 19.8 meters per second.

Personal burst speed: 13 meters per second.

Collision in 0.7 seconds. Estimated fatality: 99.99%

Optimal dodge angle...

Optimal attack angle...

Optimal attack point...

These calculations flashed through Logan's mind in just 0.01 seconds.

It was as if his body had become a precision machine. Without even intentional thinking or reflecting, his brain had already calculated the perfect timing and angle to evade the boar's charge.

Logan sidestepped at the last possible moment, avoiding the boar's tusks by mere centimeters. His arm moved with mechanical accuracy, plunging his knife deep into the boar's neck.

Then, without hesitation, he released the knife, to avoid being dragged along by the boar's momentum.

The boar continued its charge for several more meters before coming to a staggering halt. Though the wound had slowed it down, it wasn't yet dead. The enraged boar stumbled, turning for one final attack.

But as it turned, a sharp arrowhead met its gaze.

In the moment Logan had released his knife, the crossbow had already appeared in his hands once more. Without needing to aim, he had anticipated the boar's movements, firing the instant it turned.

It was as if the boar had turned its head straight into the path of the arrow.

The arrow pierced through the boar's eye socket and into its brain with tremendous force.

The beast swayed for a moment, then collapsed to the ground with a thunderous crash.

The next second, Logan's vision cleared, and he found himself back to normal.

He looked down at his hands, surprised by the clean kill.

So this was the feeling of unlocking the gene lock?

No wonder, even in the pitch-black rainforests, Agent No.2 could predict movements based on the faintest sounds.

At the moment the gene lock was activated, the brain worked like a supercomputer.

Unfortunately, it only lasted three seconds.

It could only be used in critical moments. But the aftereffects would be coming soon, right?

Just as that thought crossed his mind, a wave of excruciating pain surged through his body.

The side effects of the gene lock had arrived.
