Kapitel 268: Losing Control

...

When they arrived at Fabé Village, the situation developed beyond Kevin's expectations. One thing he had guessed correctly was that the landlord Biden was not yet ready for the next move. Kevin led the villagers to surround Biden's mansion, demanding that Biden come out for negotiations.

The residents of Fabé Village had never seen such a scene before, and anyone who dared to surround the Biden family's home must be a powerful force. Each one of them was so scared that they hid inside their homes.

The gate of the Biden mansion was tightly closed. Inside, there were quite a few servants and bodyguards armed with weapons, wooden sticks, hoes, and other makeshift weapons, standing on the walls to protect the estate. The Biden family, being the largest landowners in the area and having committed numerous wrongdoings, took the security of their estate very seriously. They had fortified their residence like a small fortress, with people stationed on the walls.

Kevin and the villagers shouted outside the wall for a long time, but their target—landlord Biden—did not appear. Instead, his steward, a fat and bald man with a waistline that matched his master's, slowly climbed up onto the wall.

The steward arrogantly said, "You people are not paying your taxes honestly, injuring Biden's men, and you dare to come to Fabé Village to make trouble!"

Kevin and the others were enraged by his attitude and shouted, "We want to see Biden himself!"

The steward disdainfully replied, "Outrageous! Do you think someone like Biden can be seen by the likes of you? I advise you to stop having delusions. Go back home, prepare your taxes, and if you behave yourselves, perhaps Lord Biden will show mercy and pardon your tax evasion."

Kevin loudly said, "Hmph! We have already discovered your crime of imposing a war tax!"

"Absurd! Lord Biden is merely following the orders of the Lord's Manor!"

"Then show us the Lord's decree!"

"Nonsense! Do you think you are entitled to see the Lord's decree?"

"Not showing the decree means it's fake. We should have reported you, but if you agree to reduce the head tax according to our conditions, we will not report you to the Lord's Manor."

The steward, after hearing Kevin's demands, seemed incredulous. He then exaggeratedly placed his hand on his ear and said, "What? Speak louder, I can't hear you!"

"Stop playing dumb and get Biden to come out himself! Otherwise, we really will report him to Alden Town."

"Hahaha! You've provided me with a day's worth of laughter. A bunch of peasants… Hahaha!"

The steward laughed heartily, but his constant use of the term "peasants" incited the crowd even further.

"Ouch!" A cry of pain rang out as a stone hit the steward's forehead, causing him to bleed.

Soon, the steward's face lost its smile, and he pointed at the crowd, cursing, "You… you have a lot of nerve!"

"Kill this lackey!"

Angry, the crowd threw more stones.

In a panic, the steward ordered from behind, "Quick! Drive these peasants away!"

Soon, people appeared on the walls, armed with slingshots, and began firing stones into the crowd below.

The villagers, caught off guard, were struck by the stones, many suffering severe injuries, including head wounds. They were packed tightly outside the wall, and the slingshots didn't need much precision; some of those hit in vital areas collapsed on the ground, their fate uncertain.

The crowd became chaotic and furious.

"Kill these scoundrels!"

They threw everything they could find at the walls.

The stone-throwing battle continued for a while, with casualties on both sides.

As the villagers' anger grew, someone shouted, "Kill these bastards! Let's rush in and drag Biden out!"

No one noticed that some people had managed to get two ladders from an unknown source. The ladders were quickly placed against the wall, and the enraged villagers climbed up to fight the Biden family's guards.

Seeing the situation getting out of control, Kevin regained his composure and shouted to those climbing the wall, "Subdue them, but don't cause deaths!"

But his voice was drowned out by the chaos, and it seemed no one was paying attention to him, or perhaps they were too distracted to hear him.

People shouted and climbed the ladders, quickly overpowering the guards on the wall. Seeing they were at a disadvantage, most of the guards jumped down and fled into the mansion, leaving those who couldn't escape to cower on the ground. The furious villagers showed no mercy, relentlessly beating the guards with their fists and feet.

Those who managed to climb over the wall opened the main gate, and the surrounding villagers surged in.

Kevin climbed onto the wall and did his best to stop those still beating the guards, but the guards who hadn't escaped were already lifeless.

"Sigh!" Kevin sighed heavily and then stood on the wall, shouting to the villagers rushing into the yard to calm down.

But it was in vain. Once inside the mansion, the villagers began forcefully opening doors, dragging out anyone they found and beating them indiscriminately. In their blind rage, everyone inside the mansion was considered guilty.

The enraged crowd quickly searched the mansion inside and out, but Biden and the steward were nowhere to be found.

They bound the mansion's servants and forced them to reveal Biden's whereabouts, but no useful information was obtained.

During the search, something unexpected happened.

Someone discovered a room filled with several boxes. When the boxes were opened, the golden glow of coins made everyone freeze in awe.

Having never seen so much money in their lives, the impoverished villagers were stunned for half a minute. The first person to recover dashed forward and grabbed a handful of money, stuffing it into his pocket, followed by a second and third handful.

But he was soon pushed aside as the crowd surged forward, grabbing the money and stuffing it into their pockets.

Those who were searching elsewhere also arrived upon hearing the commotion, and the boxes of money were quickly divided among the villagers. Many people fought over the money.

After the boxes were emptied, those who arrived later lamented their luck, regretting not finding the treasure first.

But they soon found a way to make up for their regrets. Although the coins were all gone, the mansion still contained many other valuables.

Thus began a full-blown looting spree. People started rummaging through the mansion for any valuables, stuffing anything that looked valuable into bags.

The commotion at Biden's mansion quickly reached the residents of Fabé Village.

It was like a thunderclap: the once proud landlord Biden had been driven away, and a group of outsiders was plundering his belongings!

Shock quickly turned into resentment: How could those outsiders get away with it?

No, the property of Biden's family should also be shared by us! That landlord had oppressed us for so long.

Thus, the villagers of Fabé also rushed into the mansion. Fearing the courage of the previous invaders, they didn't demand the already divided loot but began grabbing what was left.

Furniture was either carried away or dismantled, and even granite bricks that they had never seen before were pried off and taken.

The servants abandoned by Biden were out of luck. They were forced to hand over their own money and valuables.

Fabé Village was large, and the Biden family had lived there for generations. Some branches of the family and other wealthy villagers in the area also suffered the same fate...

Only Kevin stood despondently at the gate, on the verge of tears. This was not what he had envisioned!

When people lost their sanity, he tried to stop his comrades from their rampage, but it was of no use.

Even he felt a burning desire when seeing others grab money by the handful and struggled hard to suppress this urge.

What to do next? Kevin felt a sense of panic.
