4.44% Fake Mage: My students make me unparalleled / Chapter 2: First Lesson

Kapitel 2: First Lesson

"Yes! I knew you were a real mage!"

Natasha was so excited that she she jumped up a few times.

Mathew silently stretched out his hand and closed the boxes containing the apprenticeship fee, with a serious look on his face, pretending to be a strict teacher.

He really didn't want to commit fraud, but what Natasha gave him was too attractive to him.

In his previous life he was a web novel writer, so making up a set of semi believable practices to become a mage would not be too difficult.

Considering that Natasha's brain did not seem to be working very well, he was confident in fooling her.

What would he do when she realized that she was unable to become a mage by following his instructions?

He would blame it on her lack of aptitude, after all, not everyone is suited to become a mage.

After a few moments, Natasha seemed to reign in her excitement and looked at Mathew with expectation.

"Teacher, when will you teach me how to become a mage?"

Looking at Natasha's eager eyes, Mathew put one hand behind his back, looked to the sky at a forty five degree angle, pretending to be profound, and said slowly:

"I am only temporarily accepting you as my student, but if you are unable to become an apprentice mage within a year, it means that you and I have no fate as a teacher and student. Do you understand?"

Natasha's heart trembled, she took a deep breath and solemnly responded:

"I understand!"

'Yes this is how a real master should act, unlike those cheaters I met before!'

'But if I can't become a mage within a year that mean he is a liar too!'

"Teacher, don't worry, if I cannot do it within a year I won't blame you. I will definitely let you rest in peace and depart from here!"

Mathew had a look of relief on his face, unaware of the real meaning behind the words.

'Let alone one year, it is impossible even if I give you ten or even a hundred years.'

Before making up the skills and teaching them to Natasha, Mathew needed to understand the situation of the the outside world.

Since Natasha mistakenly thought that he was a reclusive Mage who had secluded himself from the world and was unaware of the external situation, it was reasonable for him to be a bit ignorant, so Mathew asked directly.

Hearing that Mathew knew nothing about the outside world, Natasha not only had no doubts, but also believed more and more that her master was an old Mathew who lived in seclusion, with a long lifespan.

Mathew led her to some benches under the shade of a tree, she answered all the questions he asked and even supplemented on her own initiative.

After some understanding, Mathew had a general understanding of the outside world.

The small mountain village is located in Botala country, one of the three biggest countries in this small country, the other two being Malla and Bidu.

From Natasha's mouth, he learnt that the magic only exits in ancient records and folklore.

The only presence of extraordinary power exists in the form of specialization of "knights", by practicing according to certain exercises and techniques, knights can gain strength exceeding that of mortals.

Unfortunately due to lack of mana, there is a bottleneck that has stopped all talented knights in the continent from accessing more power.

Mathew was speechless after hearing this.

'Since there is a lack of mana in this continent why are you still searching for mages? This girl must have been dropped on her head as a baby!'

He secretly slandered.

Natasha explained that she had been obsessed with some storybook legends since she was a child, determined to find a real mage and practice extremely powerful and unique magic skills.

Because of this obsession, she is somewhat famous in the north eastern county as a dull noble lady that believes in the legends myths.

After understanding the general situation of outside world, Mathew felt a little regretful, after all he also wanted to experience what it would be like to become a mage.

Anyway, he could use the newly acquired information to create more believable lies.

It is impossible to succeed in becoming a mage, so he would just fool around, if she can't become a mage, it will be because her qualifications are not good enough, not because his own skills are not good.

Thinking of this, Mathew said:

"My teachings will focus on the word 'enlightenment'. Whether you can get started depends on your qualifications and talents."

"I will say it again, if you can't succeed in one year, you will have missed your chance."

Natasha slightly narrowed her eyes becoming slightly suspicious of this old man, but she still took a deep breath and responded respectfully:

"I understand! When do we start?"

Mathew put his hands behind his back, raised his head slightly and looked up at the sky, and said in a calm tone:

"I have never really taught a student in my life, so I will have to compile and streamline some lessons for you, you can have that house over there, our lessons will start tomorrow morning."

"Oh, ok."

Natasha sounded disappointed, but she seemed to understood his difficulties so she complied.

As she walked away, Mathew overhead some of her low mutterings.

"...in the story book the student was taught his first lesson on the first day, could this old man be another fake?"

Mathew's eye slightly twitched as he thought to himself: 'Story books are not realistic at all ok? I must act better tomorrow, I can't let her suspect me!'

In the morning, under the shade of a tree.

Mathew looked at the very attentive Natasha while muttering in his heart: 'I spent most of last night working up my brain to come up with this nonsense, you better appreciate it!'

He had used all the knowledge he had accumulated from reading online novels that he could still remember from his previous life, and he refined it to compile a relatively complete outline of what the profession of Mages.

Mathew cleared his throat and started his lesson.

"Do you what mana is?"

Natasha didn't even have to think, as she spit out a few definitions in one breath:

"The breath of life. The energy between the sky and the earth. The source of power of mages."

In order to show that he is an expert, Mathew had to act as though he had more knowledge than his student, thus he did not agree with her from the start.

He shook his head and responded:

"No. Well, to some lesser degree you are correct. Those definitions define the a small part of what mana is."

"Mana is the source of all creation! Before the world existed, before the sun, the moon, planets, stars, the solar system, galaxy, astral planes, black holes, and even before matter, only mana existed."

After saying this, Mathew glanced at the chubby girl with the corner of his eye.

'She must be impressed with all these words right?'

According to his expectations, he found that Natasha's eyes had widened and she seemed impressed and confused all at once.

"Is mana so impressive? What is a sala system? Galaxy? What plane hole?.."

Mathew did not address her confusion but instead continued with his line of thought.

"Well I don't expect you to understand all these yet."

"What I want to tell you is that mana has always existed and it will always exist, so the claims that there is no mana in this continent are nonsense!"

"Mana, like energy, cannot be destroyed or created. It can only be be converted from one form to another. It is not that there is no mana in this continent but that it is not in it's more easily accessible form, elemental mana."

"Well, it is said that there was a divine mage from ancient times that could destroy and create mana, but that is a story for another time."

As expected, Mathew found that Natasha was hooked by him, and her eyes were shining with excitement, and he knew that she was already fooled.

Since he was making it up, he naturally had to exaggerate the power of mages and make it sound impressive.

If he was ever found out to be lying, given her particular disposition, it was possible for her to hire him as a story teller.

He had to consider a way out, after all, Natasha's knight had been looking at him menacingly while digging a hole that eerily looked like a grave.

"So there is mana but it is not in it's accessible form? Elemental mana? What is that is sounds impressive!"

'I have finally found a real Mage! Wait until I gain magical abilities, I want to see who else dares to laugh at me!'

Natasha's eyes were wild and her heart was filled with excitement.

"Teacher, then how do we get elemental mana from mana?"

Natasha asked excitedly.

"This..."

Mathew shook his head and answered: "We don't."

"But then how do I become a mage if I don't can't access mana?"

Having already come up with a counter measure, Mathew did not panic, he instead changed the subject and tackled the topic from another angle.

"In this world, there are two types of mages, archaic mages and modern mages."

"In ancient times, elemental mana was very rare, even rarer than it is now, but mages still existed! They used mana in it's raw form!"

"While modern mages are very dependent on elemental mana."

"At the same level, archaic mages can sweep the floor with at least 10 modern mages of the same level."

"An archaic mage can easily fight and defeat modern mages of higher ranks than them!"

"So you tell me, do you want to be an archaic mage or a modern mage?"

Before Natasha could answer, he continued:

"I must make it clear to you right now, I your teacher, am an archaic mage and I am not willing to accept a mediocre student."

This was another tactic to explain why Natasha would not be able to become a mage after taught her for a year.

Natasha was very shocked by the new information, but instead of dampening her enthusiasm, it made her more excited.

"Archaic mage... it sounds so cooool!"

She was full of desire and yearning for her future as a mage.
