Kapitel 65: Ch. 65: The Whelp

The King turned his beady eyes to me with a twinkle and for some reason I actually got nervous.

"Lady Ezran, I want to apologize for the way I treated you upon our first encounter. You are an exceptional leader, truly one-of-a-kind. To you I offer a selection of jeweled eggs - please choose the one that calls to you."

I furrowed my brows as some servants brought forth a long pillow holding five ruby stones. I looked up asking, "Aren't these the same stones from the stream in the mines? They are eggs?"

The King nodded with a smile, "Yes. We don't typically give them away but I wanted to give you something rare since it's so rare that I feel the need to apologize and rethink my actions."

I bit my lip and looked at the stones before me. They were all beautiful and upon further inspection there were little creatures on the inside moving around . . . As I looked closer, it seemed the one in the middle stood out for some reason. The ruby was more blood-like and I could feel a faint hum coming from it.

I reached out to grab it . . . as I held it in my palm I felt a small fluttering and a CRACK. Opening my hand nervously, I thought I broke the stone but to my utter amazement it was cracking like an egg. Within seconds, a very tiny blood-red winged lizard emerged, no bigger than my thumb. When it looked up at me I could see deep into it's obsidian eyes. My mind fogged over for a moment as the whelp's eyes dilated and I swear the thing smiled at me. Instantly it felt like I could tell what the little whelp was feeling.

I looked up in astonishment at the King, who was equally as surprised.

"Aren't these supposed to hatch in water?" I asked.

The Princess came forward since her father was dumbstruck, "Typically yes. It's extremely rare for a whelp to hatch within a person's presence, even less so within someone's hand. You are truly blessed - this is a good sign."

Richie came forward behind me, turning serious and protective, "What do you mean a good sign'? How's my Ezzie blessed? This thing looks creepy, like a snake."

The little whelp looked up at Richie and I felt anger coming from it's tiny form.

The Crown Princess shook her head, "No no, they are not creepy. Most whelps are like any typical insect but there's some that are more self-aware and intelligent. If these type hatch around a human, they can imprint on them for life. If the human dies, so will the whelp. These advanced creatures can live up to a typical human lifetime and will follow you. If the imprint is strong enough, it's been said that a person can actually feel the whelp's emotions . . . Congratulations Lady Ezran, you now have a permanent pet!"

Seriously? I looked down at the creature and felt a twinge of anxiety. Another life depended on me? Didn't I have enough responsibilities? The whelp looked up at me with those big black eyes, curling up to my thumb and wrapping it's little tail around it.

I couldn't believe it . . .

"It's freaking adorable." I whispered.

The King finally overcame his shocked demeanor and let out a boisterous laugh, "Well Lady Ezran, it looks like you chose wisely! What an auspicious day - an instance like this hasn't occurred in over fifty years. You're incredibly lucky."

"Thank you." I said humbly, still looking at the little one.

Richie came forward, grunting while shaking his head, "It's scaly Ez. So gross!"

The whelp looked up and hissed at Richie while I chuckled, "Good girl."

"How do you know it's a girl?" Richie asked with wide eyes.

"I dunno, just a feeling. She doesn't like you - you should be nicer to her." I said to him.

"Are you serious?" Richie asked but Iren interjected, "She's so cute! Ezzie you're so amazing! How do you always manage to do the unthinkable? This creature is so tiny and adorable! Can I hold her?"

After calming Iren down, we said our thanks again and headed out. Before we left, I made sure to request a book on whelps so that I could take care of my little one properly. While we were directed out of the woods surrounding the fortress, I looked over at Kovin feeling very curious.

"Kovin you really have nothing you desire?"

Kovin rode along on his horse, his rugged face shadowed by the darkness from the trees, "Should I?"

"I suppose not." I answered. Sometimes he was so distant. Looking at him, I wondered again how he got his scar.

"Well I'm just glad that I didn't have to marry the Princess." Iren had his horse trot up to get his take in the conversation, "Perhaps we could've had Sir Kovin marry her instead?"

Kovin harrumphed causing us all to laugh. Iren pulled his new sword out and held it up, "This is a good trade though, don't you think? I can't believe the King gave me his own sword! It's even got so many diamonds in it . . . Should I even use it in battle? I'd hate to ruin it."

I shrugged while Iren kept on with his breathless banter, "The diamonds are very nice. We don't have as many jewels in the Empire as the Masons have . . . It will be a good alliance. I think diamonds are probably my favorite jewel. They're so bright and blinding - say Ezzie what's your favorite?"

I scrunched my brows, "Do I need a favorite jewel?"

"Oh come on! Jewels are cool. Did you see the King's throne? If I had a throne, it'd be inlaid with sapphires and diamonds too! Richie you've gotta have a preference right?"

Richie shrugged, eyeing the little sleepy creature on my shoulder, "Eh jewels are supposed to be a woman's best friend - that's the saying right? I suppose if I was into that sort of thing, I'd like sapphires. They're like my own baby blues."

"I like jade." Illana remarked.

I thought about it, "I guess I like emeralds? They're pretty."

Rodair looked over at me, "Emeralds would bring out m'lady's eyes."

I didn't see anything wrong with Rodair's compliment, however Richie rolled his eyes and I noticed Illana lowered her head dejectedly. What was with that?

"Illana, jade is very pretty too you know. Jade would look so good on you with your skin tone." I said leaning over to give Illana a nudge.

She looked up with a pretty smile and blushed, "Thank you m'lady."
