Kapitel 40: Chain

When Rose woke up, she felt strange. She still ached all over and she felt a bit nauseous, even though the ground was not moving anymore. Had they reached the shore? Yes. The battle. Had she been Stunned? Who had won? And where was she? She did her usual trick, using her other senses to learn as much as possible about her surroundings before opening her eyes. She was laying on some thick mattress. Much more comfortable than the hard wooden bench in her maritime prison. She didn't hear any voices. But birds? It wasn't completely dark, but she wasn't in a brightly lit area either. She was indoors, since the air was not moving. But where? Then she felt panic starting to rise in her. There was metal on her hand. Only her left hand, but the feeling was unmistakable. She was chained. She sat up with a scream. She tugged at the chain. It was attached to a peg on the wall. Just the sight of that chain made her panic. She had to control herself! After she took several deep breaths, she was able to inspect the rest of her surroundings. It was definitely a prison cell. But it did not look like any Dark Magic hideout. What was going on here? She tried to reach over to the door, but her chain stopped her. Panic! No, relax. There was nothing she could do about the chain. She would just have to wait and see who would appear on the other side of that door.

She didn't have to wait long. Her screams seemed to have been heard somewhere because a witch came to her door mere minutes afterwards. She said something in a foreign language, most likely Norwegian. When Rose only looked at her strangely, the woman smiled and tried again in English.

"What is the matter, dear? Can I help you with something?"

"Where am I? What happened to me?"

"You are in Trondheim, in Norway. I am afraid I don't have all the details, but I am sure someone will be along to talk to you shortly."

"Why am I in chains? Can you take it off?"

"Oh no, I can't do that dear. Not yet anyway. As I said, my shift only just got started so I don't have all the details, but I hear we have many new guests here."

Guests? Shift? Who was this woman? Her confusion must have been visible on her face, because the woman once again gave her a reassuring smile.

"Don't worry, as I said, I am sure someone will be along to explain everything shortly."

"But why am I in chains? I haven't done anything wrong! Please, take it off!" she felt panic rise in her again. No. She would not cry.

"That is a matter of some debate" a male voice said from the left side of the corridor. A stern-looking man came over to her door and looked in on her. She wasn't sure she liked the look on his face.

"My name is Lagasete. I am overmagilensmann… well, in English, you could say I am the Head of Magical Law Enforcement here in Norway." Rose looked up at him. She was relieved that it wasn't Dark Wizards that held her captive. But why had these people captured her?

"I don't understand. Why am I here?"

"You were taken in a raid involving several Dark Wizards. They attacked and killed 18 of my men. Does that sound familiar to you?" His face darkened as he said this.

"I… Yes, but… I didn't attack you."

"Didn't you? It was your word that started it all. You shouted, and they all attacked. One of the men that caught you was killed. Who are you?"

Her shout? That was not how she remembered it. Lestrange had pushed her forwards. She may have uttered a shout of surprise, but it had certainly not been an order. But maybe Lestrange had made it look that way. She shouldn't have taunted him. And he had probably been the one killing the Norwegian that ordered her to stand still. She had heard him behind her as she ran.

"I assure you; I did not do any such thing. I was their captive. He pushed me forward as a distraction and ran after me as I tried to escape. Please, has no one from the British Ministry for Magic told you about this situation?"

"Perhaps they have. But I am asking the questions here. What is your name?"

"I'm… I'm Rose Malfoy. I'm the daughter of the Minister of Magic in Britain, Hermione Granger."

"Malfoy? That is very interesting." The man just stood there, looking at her. What was going on here? She wanted to demand answers, to demand release, but she knew instinctively that that was the wrong way to go. She tried to stand very still and tried to ignore the chain that held her arm tight to the wall.

"Please, sir, I am willing to answer any questions you may have. This is all a big misunderstanding."

"Misunderstanding? Was it a misunderstanding that led the British Ministry to let loose 20 Dark Wizards against Norway? Misunderstanding that it was a woman claiming to be the estranged daughter of the Minister that led them here? 18 of the best wizards in this country are dead, Mrs. Malfoy. Who would you say is to blame for that?"

Let loose Dark Wizards? Estranged daughter? Maybe she was still dreaming.

"Please, sir, I assure you, I am not the leader of those people. I was their captive. I have spent the last three days on the boat with them, being tortured every day. If you contact the British Ministry of Magic, they can verify my identity."

Lagasete ignored her pleas. He just stood there looking at her for a few more minutes. Then he turned around and left, taking the other woman with him.

Rose got more and more confused. What was going on here? Hadn't Uncle Harry or her mother contacted these people? How had they found them, if not for the Tracker?

She had so much restless energy and nowhere to put it. She couldn't even walk around in her cell much, not with her hand chained to the wall. There was a window, but she couldn't get to it with the chain. She could barely see outside. She thought she saw a church spire in the distance. It really was a lot like being back at Malfoy Manor. But there, she had at least had Scorpius.

The thought of Scorpius was what made her break down. She fell back on the bed and cried. She ignored her surroundings, unable to take it all in. She just lay down on the bed, longing for Scorpius.
