Kapitel 4: Chapter 4: Consequences of Doubt
Emma ran out of the bar, barely holding back her tears. She had failed. The relief of not going further was mixed with fear of the consequences. What would Ana think? She had promised her an easy job, but now, without completing her part, how could she face her?
She walked the streets for several minutes before stopping at a nearby park. She collapsed onto a bench, breathing deeply in the cold night air. She wanted to feel safe, wanted to calm down, but inside, everything was chaos.
Her phone vibrated, pulling her out of her thoughts. She pulled it out with trembling hands. It was a message from Ana.
"What happened? Carlos told me you left early."
Emma felt the knot in her stomach tighten. How hadn't she realized Ana already knew Carlos? She didn't know what to reply. Words floated around in her mind, but none seemed right. Finally, she decided to be honest.
"I'm sorry. I couldn't go through with it. I felt bad; it wasn't what I expected."
She sent the message and waited, holding her breath. It didn't take two minutes for Ana to respond.
"Emma, relax. These things happen. It's your first time. But we need to talk. Can we meet tomorrow?"
Emma let out the breath she'd been holding. At least Ana wasn't angry... yet. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had disappointed someone, though she wasn't sure who exactly: Ana, herself, or maybe both.
