The wingspan of the lightning bird can exceed five meters, making it twice as large as the fiercest golden eagle on Earth. Although the Eternal Wing Technique can enhance the strength of the wings, it does not endow magical wings with abilities beyond the laws of gravity. If it weren't for the presence of such a colossal raptor as the lightning bird, even if an ordinary sparrow's wings were transplanted onto an adult, they would merely be able to fan a breeze, with no hope of flight.
At my signal, the Wolf King threw a rope to Snook, and soon a massive net unfurled between us. As we soared over towering trees, we simultaneously released our grip, letting the giant net cascade down to catch upon the sturdy trunks.
Under the cliffs where the lightning birds roost, we swiftly set dozens of traps. Observing the nets spread across the ground, I discreetly gripped the Magic Gem Emerald and cast three curses—Weakness, Dizziness, and Fatigue—upon the nearest, remarkably large lightning bird.
After succumbing to these three spells, the bird weakly flapped its wings a few times before quickly becoming feeble. It was indeed a rare spectacle to witness a bird plummeting from the sky. I had not anticipated the extraordinary effectiveness of my curses; I had merely expected these spells to serve as an appetizer, yet it seemed this unsophisticated guest was already full after just a starter.
While Jack had been rather lackadaisical during our operation, he suddenly sprang into action, making a leap from the helicopter. He landed precisely on one of our nets, emerging unscathed and even had the leisure to wave and smile at us before dashing towards the spot where the lightning bird fell.
The Wolf King spat in disdain and muttered, "That rascal Jack is quick on his feet this time. Do you still have a way to bring down that lightning bird?" His latter question was directed at me.
Seemingly untroubled, I gestured towards the colossal lightning bird. Lily immediately sped towards a massive, pitch-black bird with a wingspan of six to seven meters. Even among lightning birds, this one was particularly gigantic; the Wolf King's eyes lit up, clearly having set his sights on it. Only such wings could support his robust physique.
The Magic Gem Emerald was no longer usable, but I had learned over ten spells from the Book of Max's Magical Incantations, one of which was Soul Binding. This necromancy spell doesn't confine the body but ensnares the life force, akin to the soul-binding chains in Chinese mythology. As I approached within range of the Soul Binding spell, I waved my hands, unleashing ten chains of pale flames that landed upon the dark lightning bird.
As I gently pulled, I could vaguely see a bird-shaped aura being extracted by the Soul Binding. Just as I was about to exert more force, the lightning bird erupted with electric currents, causing the pale flame chains to shatter one after another, failing to hold it.
The Wolf King reacted swiftly, realizing my failure, and without hesitation hurled a short axe across hundreds of meters, striking the lightning bird's neck. Though it crackled with electricity, could the Wolf King's empowered axe be so easily endured?
With a mournful cry, the lightning bird's wings faltered, and it flapped feebly before succumbing to its weight. We, a group of cold-blooded beings driven by a thirst for blood, barely spared a glance at the fallen target; it had lost its value, and we immediately turned our attention to the next quarry.
Having acquired the Book of Max's Magical Incantations, I became the main force in this battle. Though I had mastered only over ten basic spells, their successive application put the lightning birds at a severe disadvantage, allowing us to capture seven alive.
During the combat, I discovered that the most effective way to deal with these naturally magical raptors was through the unassuming Gravity Spell. With my ample and formidable mental strength, twelve consecutive Gravity Spells were sufficient to bring any lightning bird crashing down from the skies.
The Wolf King, Hachijo Shinfu, Lily, Snook, Bullet, Milinda, and Romie all secured magical wings, while I still hesitated in choosing my target. The largest birds had already been captured; the remaining ones soaring in the sky were too small. We needed to venture further south to see if we could find any worthy lightning birds.
This mission to capture the lightning birds was even smoother than I had anticipated, yet in such circumstances, an inexplicable anxiety gnawed at me. The dangers of Demon Island were ever-present, and while that was bearable, it was unsettling to feel that my companions were not dependable. The sensation of a cold wind brushing against my back was truly discomforting.
Lily piloted the helicopter away from the shores of Demon Island and onto the sea. While we had captured lightning birds without alarming large flocks, we had faced no attacks. Snook, on a magical flying carpet, shouted, "Why don't we set sail now and capture a couple more lightning birds along the way?" I nodded in agreement and promptly activated the communication card to call Jack, who had fallen silent since our departure.
Moments later, the communication card offered no response, but a figure suddenly ascended from the cliffs, accompanied by an audacious cackle, soaring toward us.
"What has happened to Jack?" Lily inquired softly beside me, having already recognized the massive figure with outstretched wings as Jack.
My expression darkened as I replied, "He has succumbed to his bloodlust."
Jack was drenched in blood, nearly every inch of him stained crimson, and behind him trailed a cloud of feathers as thousands of enraged lightning birds rallied against this despicable murderer, creating a swirling net of electric fury that sent a shiver of dread down my spine.
It had been a while since Jack had last killed; I recalled him introducing himself as a bloodthirsty maniac, and while I had remained cautious, I had never expected him to possess such a fervor for extinguishing life.
