Kapitel 35: Chapter 35: Loan shark

Lin Fan didn't rush into agreeing to this offer, rather he calmly asked, "How would this deal be made? Would I become a cop by accepting this?"

The chief didn't answer right away as he just looked at Lin Fan and said, "There's no need to hesitate, as long as you agree, you'll have the support of the police. After all, it's not like they'll stop coming after you, wouldn't it be better if you had our support?"

The way he said this almost sounded like he knew more than he was putting on. It almost sounded like he knew about the existence of the system.

Lin Fan immediately narrowed his eyes and carefully looked over the chief.

This time, he actually tensed himself to prepare to run because the aura around the chief had changed after he had said this. It was a feeling of danger, as if he might lose his life if he were to stay here. This was a very familiar feeling that he had felt many times right before he had died before.

Lin Fan finally asked in a hesitant voice, "Who…are you?"

The chief once again revealed a smile and the feeling of danger disappeared as he said "Just your friend's boss and the chief of this police station. Well, what do you think?"

Lin Fan once again hesitated a bit as he considered the various scenarios before decisively saying, "Alright."

The chief gave a clap when he heard this and he said with a smile, "Excellent. I like young men like you. It's good to be decisive when making these important decisions."

Then he suddenly sat up in his seat and reached his hand out towards Lin Fan.

Lin Fan looked down at the hand with a confused look.

The chief revealed a smile and said, "It's a greeting, it's not like we've been formally introduced yet, have we? My name's Zhao Kuang, I know your name, but how about you give an introduction?"

Lin Fan took his hand and said with a smile as well, "I'm Lin Fan."

Chief Zhao Kuang just asked with a smile, "That's it? You're not gonna say anything else?"

Lin Fan just sat there and said, "It's not like you need anything else. This isn't that kind of cooperation, is it?"

Chief Zhao Kuang couldn't help giving a laugh before saying, "Smart lad, it's good that you catch on fast."

After saying this, Chief Zhao Kuang dug into his desk and pulled out a file which he placed on the table right in front of Lin Fan before pointing at it for him.

Lin Fan curiously picked up the file and found that there was a whole bunch of papers and photos inside this file. After looking through them, he immediately knitted his brows.

Lin Fan put the file back on the table and asked, "This is?"

Chief Zhao Kuang just gave a smile and asked, "What do you think it would be if I'm giving it to you?"

Lin Fan knitted his brows even deeper when he heard this.

Based on what he could tell from this file, the person that the chief wanted him to investigate was a loan shark and not just a loan shark, one that was suspected for murder. This would definitely not be an easy case and this was the first case that he was being given.

He couldn't help thinking that the chief was trying to sabotage him…

Lin Fan couldn't help saying, "I can go take a look, but if I can't find anything, I won't be able to do anything."

Chief Zhao Kuang nodded and said, "Your powers seems to only find dangerous criminals, so if you don't find anything, then I can just send some of my normal men to deal with it."

Lin Fan couldn't help revealing three dark lines on his face when he heard this. So he was being used as a litmus paper of sorts to test how dangerous the situation was…

He couldn't help cursing his system for putting him in these situations, but at the same time, if he didn't have the system…

Lin Fan knew that there was no need to talk about this any longer, so he asked, "What kind of benefits will I receive for doing this? Will I be a cop?"

Chief Zhao Kuang dug around in his desk again and took out a badge for Lin Fan, but when Lin Fan saw the badge, he couldn't help asking, "What is this?"

Chief Zhao Kuang explained, "You won't be working for the police, rather you'll be a freelance worker that we'll be hiring, so you won't have the same rights as the police. With that badge, if you show it to our officers, they will at least know to let you onto crime scenes and help you with things you need help with. However, you won't be able to do the same things as normal cops would like being able to arrest people or give tickets."

Lin Fan's face couldn't help sinking when he heard this and he asked, "Then are there any benefits to this at all?"

Chief Zhao Kuang revealed a smile and said, "Well, it's not like we're throwing you under the bus. Technically, we will be hiring you as a consultant, so you'll still be receiving a salary from the department and with how dangerous it will be, it will start at at least a hundred thousand."

This made Lin Fan a bit more excited when he heard this.

Chief Zhao Kuang gave a chuckle when he saw this and he said, "Just give Murong your banking information later and we'll set it all up for you. I'll even use my authority as the chief to give you a special starting bonus."

Lin Fan narrowed his eyes and said, "It wouldn't be the hundred thousand for catching Chu Chu, would it?"

Chief Zhao Kuang revealed an awkward smile when he heard this, "So you Murong already told you about that. I'll get them to add another thousand just for you since you're handling this case for me, how about that?"

Lin Fan knew that he could push it, but he chose not to since he hoped that this would be a long working relationship. After all, the protection of the police was actually the best part of this job. The quests that the system gave him were just too dangerous sometimes…

Lin Fan gave a nod and then he went forward to take the file to look over it again.

Seeing that everything was over, Chief Zhao Kuang said, "Xiao Fan, can you wait outside for a bit? I have something to talk to Murong about."

Lin Fan remembered then that Murong Yue was also in the room, but he also felt that this was normal since Zhao Kuang was Murong Yue's boss. He gave a nod and then walked out the door, sitting down at the chair outside Chief Zhao Kuang's office.

The moment the door was shut, Murong Yue immediately pulled out a pencil from the pencil cup on Chief Zhao Kuang's desk and placed it right at his throat.

Chief Zhao Kuang didn't flinch at all, but he did put his hands up with a smile without saying a thing.

Murong Yue just glared at him, but it didn't seem like she was going to stab him in the neck.

Just like that, the two of them, one standing and one sitting were locking gazes in a standoff.

Finally, Chief Zhao Kuang said, "Stop looking at me like that already. You know why I did this."

Murong Yue gave a cold snort before saying, "That's why you're not dead yet."

Chief Zhao Kuang gave a chuckle at this before saying, "You know why I had to do this. He's not normal, you've seen it yourself. If we don't contain him now, who knows what kind of things he'll get up to? It's better if we bring him under us so we can watch over him now before he gets more dangerous."

Murong Yue had an unwilling look in her eyes, but she also knew that Chief Zhao Kuang was right.

Chief Zhao Kuang wasn't just the chief of this police station, he also had another title since he led a special squad. It was a squad that was completely filled with Power Users.

They didn't know what kind of power Lin Fan had, but they knew that if they didn't pull him in, they would definitely regret it since it seemed to have something to do with gathering information.

Compared to those powers that were simply augmenting human bodies, making them stronger and faster, these information gathering powers were much rarer and useful. They would definitely try to bring in every single one that they could.

Murong Yue paused for a few seconds before saying, "Make me his watcher then."

Chief Zhao Kuang immediately agreed, "That's fine, it's what I wanted to do anyway. However, if there is the possibility that we need to…"

Murong Yue revealed a smile that was like a flower blooming at that second and she said, "I'd kill everyone who'd come after him first."

That smile didn't seem like a flower blooming to Chief Zhao Kuang as he felt a chill run down his back. He knew that this was her true personality and it was one of the reasons he kept her on his squad even though she had no powers. She had a different way of taking care of things assigned to her and that was enough for him.

Chief Zhao Kuang just said with a sigh, "Fine, do whatever you want, I'll handle the paperwork, but you'll learn that there are some insane people with insane powers one of these days."

Murong Yue still had the same smile as she said, "I'll still kill them all."
