Jesse had cars ready for us because of course, he did. Between him and Ellis, there was no way they wouldn’t have thought of everything.

Bethany was taken to one of the cars by Jesse, as we got into the others. Lynn, Uncle Anthony, and Carl in one, and Ellis and me in the other.

Carl looked different after a few shots of painkillers, and a few bandages applied field-medicine style by one of Jesse’s assorted associates.

My own feelings for Carl weren’t what they once were. Even so, I was still glad he was okay. For the sake of his parents if nothing else. No one deserved to see their child tortured and killed.

I leaned against Ellis as we walked to the last car, and he put an arm around me, despite the bandages needed after the slashes of Bethany’s knife.

He swore up and down they were only flesh wounds, but they were still sterilized and bandaged, just in case.

“Where to?” I asked as we got into the car.

“Back to the hotel. We need a vacation!”
