The camera flash came at her like an annoying bolt of lightning. People around her kept taking photos, and although she didn't know what the flash was for, she could deduce it was to capture a still image of her among those electronic devices. She walked along with the others across the bridge until they reached a quieter area. The flash stopped, and she couldn't have been more relieved. Happy, who was on a phone call, informed the rest that Stark would send another car to get them to the base faster. As they walked, Ned stopped, and the others followed suit.
"I have a question," Ned said, looking at the woman with eyes like the sun. "Are you a goddess? Is your name Freya?"
"That's right," Freya replied, standing just a few steps away from him. "And yes, I am a goddess."
"No wonder you're so beautiful," Ned blurted out without thinking. When he realized what he said, his face turned red. "I'm sorry..."
"It's okay," Freya said with a laugh. "I'm not used to being called that kind of thing, but it's fine."
"Don't they tell you?" Peter asked, furrowing his brow. "That you're more than beautiful? Haven't you seen yourself? If you were in my high school, everyone, everyone," he emphasized, "would be after you." He coughed, feeling his face burning. He was about to turn redder than a tomato. Freya couldn't help but laugh a little. Ned, who had stayed still, resumed walking, and the others followed. "I don't...I'm sorry..."
"Don't apologize. Really, it's fine," she told him. "You know what? I think you must have a lot of girls after you," she said, looking at Peter. Upon hearing this, Peter laughed. "What's so funny?"
"The nonsense you just said. I don't have girls after me."
"He has snakes," Michelle spoke up, and Peter frowned.
"I don't understand," Freya said, a little confused. "But regarding what I said, it's not nonsense. I really think it's true. One thing is not realizing it, but another...is not seeing how beautiful you are."
Peter couldn't help but look at the ground upon hearing this. He was redder than a tomato. Nobody had ever said those kinds of words to him or made him feel like he deserved them. Plus, Freya was saying them without any filter, directly. Michelle and Ned couldn't help but find it amusing, seeing Peter so embarrassed.
"Well..." Peter spoke up after a few seconds. "I don't consider myself beautiful or anything."
"Well, you should consider yourself as such. Because you are. Just look at yourself. Everything contrasts," Freya said.
"What contrasts?" Happy asked.
"He's a good guy, has a big heart, likes to help. I can even deduce that he's there for others," she said, and Ned and Michelle nodded in agreement. "That contrasts with what's on the outside," she shrugged. "I'm not going to say you're not handsome when you are. You're Spider, and I've seen many spiders, and for the first time in my life, I can say that I've seen one that's very gallant, attractive." She looked at Peter with her head down and her eyes up, and he was looking at her very, very blushy.
"That's something your snake of a girlfriend will never tell you," Michelle said.
"That's what you call a snake?" Freya asked.
"Yes," Michelle replied. "She treats him worse than an animal."
"That's not true," Peter retorted.
"You know it's true, kid," Happy spoke. "That girl is despicable and-"
"Love, oh love!" a female voice interrupted as she lunged towards Peter without warning. "It was terrible what happened on the bridge, I thought I was going to die. I thought my hairdo would be ruined," she continued, wrapping her arms around Parker's neck. "I think I broke several nails," she added, letting go of him to examine her nails.
"Terrible," Michelle remarked sarcastically. "Hi, Maryah."
"Hello, you," the blonde replied, looking at Michelle as if she were an insect.
"I thought you were crushed between the cars," Michelle said cynically.
"What a shame that didn't happen," Maryah replied, equally as sarcastic.
"This is the snake I was telling you about," Michelle said, looking at Freya.
Maryah looked forward and her eyes began to scrutinize the woman, as if she were beneath her.
"Are you the great girl who saved us?" Maryah asked.
"Yes," Freya replied with a smile.
"You just want attention, don't you? Besides, with the Avengers, they would have saved us all. We don't need more false gods in our world."
Upon hearing Maryah's words, Freya couldn't help but widen her eyes in surprise and furrow her brow. Maryah was worse than any narcissist, and her attitude was obvious from a mile away. Michelle was definitely right about the nickname she gave Maryah. But Freya thought that it was too small of a label. Peter exclaimed Maryah's name and she looked at him with a frown, taking out her phone. The rest of the group looked at Maryah with disgust.
"We didn't ask to come here, but we're here to keep everyone safe," Freya explained, trying to overlook the blonde's attitude.
"And what does that matter to me? We already have our heroes on our planet. We don't need great, horrible girls here," Maryah said without any consideration.
"Get out of here," Michelle said, unable to remain silent any longer. "Go."
"The bridge is free, I'll decide if I stay or not, specimen," Maryah retorted.
"Damn daughter of a-" Michelle was seconds away from attacking Maryah, but being weak, she hid behind Peter.
"Love, she's going to hit me," she cried.
"Please, Michelle. That's enough."
"Don't you see what she's doing? She's disrespecting our friend."
Freya looked at Michelle. Friend? That sounded very nice. She had to admit that this was the first time in a long time that she had been able to talk to humans and perhaps even form a friendship, and these were the first of few that she had.
"That's right," Need spoke, looking at their friend.
"Is she your friend, Peter?" Maryah asked.
Peter was about to answer, but Freya cut in.
"No, we're not friends," she said. "I'm friends with Ned, Happy, Michelle. That's all."
"What?" Michelle whispered, looking at her. Freya just watched her, knowing what she was doing.
"Happy and I are going to the base. You guys go study," Freya said.
"Peter should go to the base," Maryah said. "He's doing his internship with Stark."
"Good for him," Freya said indifferently. "But not today. I'm the one who has to go with Happy. He'll go with you to study."
"I'm not going. I have to go to the beauty salon," Michelle said, putting her phone to her ear.
The car Happy was waiting for arrived. Natasha got out, greeted Happy, and smiled when she saw Freya.
"Something told me Frey and Tony were indignant about something," she said, and Freya couldn't help but laugh. "Hey," she hugged her. "How have you been?"
"Saving your world today, it seems," Freya said with a laugh. "And you?"
"Great. Trying to keep Tony from breaking something because he's offended," Natasha laughed. "We'll talk more later. Let's go to the base first."
"We have to drop the kids off at the Institute first," Happy said.
"Even her?" Nat asked, looking at Maryah. "May went home in her car, just so you know. And secondly, I don't think that girl will fit in the car."
"Don't worry, fake blonde. I have my car," Freya jangled her keys in front of her face.
"But it's never as good as Stark's," Nat sang sarcastically. Maryah rolled her eyes.
"I'm leaving now," she said.
"Thank God!" Michelle exclaimed when Maryah left.
"Go to hell," Maryah told Michelle. "Bye, Peter," she attempted to kiss his cheek.
"You're worse than her, I don't think so," Peter said, looking at her with disdain. "And I don't care if you do or not."
"That's not the way to talk to someone," Freya said, getting into the car. She was angry.
Ned got in too, followed by Happy.
"Aren't you getting in?" Peter asked Freya when he saw that Nat had already gotten in.
"No. I have other things to do," she said in a tone that made Peter feel a pang. "See you later." She approached the car and lowered her head to see inside. "And Michelle," she looked at her, arms crossed. "Don't get into trouble for people who don't deserve it, okay?"
"Okay," Michelle replied, and Freya smiled at her without showing her teeth. She did the same. "Help me with Peter," she whispered to Freya.
"And you help me help him," Freya said, looking at her. "Have a good afternoon. Nice to meet you and be your friend."
"Superfriend!" Ned exclaimed, and they laughed. "See you later."
"See you later."
"Peter, get in," Nat said.
Peter stopped looking at nothing and approached the car. He opened the right side and before getting in, he looked at Freya.
"Did you give me this?" he asked, pointing to his wrist, where the bracelet was.
"I don't know, Peter. Figure it out for yourself," she replied, and Peter frowned. Why was she talking to him so neutrally? "Have a good day.
He told him to just look up and rise.
