“God,no,they love me,”she assured the nurse, her voice slurred.“Brandt left his tools in the hall even though Jack told him to put them away.Jack’s pissed but really,I kind of think it’s my fault.”
The nurse’s eyes narrowed.“Honey,it’s never your fault.”
Lori shook her head.“No,no,I couldn’t see them in the dark.I could’ve turned on the light.I mean,I’d just turned out the light, but if I turned on the one in the hall,I would’ve seen the tools and not tripped over them.”
The nurse didn’t look convinced.“Who’s Jack? The guy who came in with you?Where was he when this happened?”
“Downstairs,”Lori told her.“With Brandt.They were his tools.”
“Brandt’s,”the nurse clarified.“And who’s he?Jack’s friend?”
“Our boyfriend,”Lori explained.
A furrow creased the nurse’s brow.“Yours?I thought Jack—”
“Ours.”Lori enunciated the word slowly.“Both of ours.It’s sort of like—I don’t know…”
The nurse looked skeptical.“A sister-wives thing?”
