The man known as the 'Doctor' in his current crowd, sat at his desk looking over at the strange kid that had stumbled their way onto his doorstep, even stranger is that it isn't even the first time this has happened.
(Its strange that it happened twice, he should have two nickels now.)
Now here he is, taking the kid in from the toxic outside is strangely selfless, something no one would ever think he would ever do.
What do they know? All of them see his unwavering aim for the attainment of progress at all means necessary and summarize his entire being as 'psychopathic' or 'monstrous' without so much as a single thought to his motivation.
The kid isn't getting in the way of his current work on shimmer, so he has no reason to kick the kid out. all he has done since being let in is mope in the corner, look gloomy.
Minutes turn to tens of minutes and the kid finally let's go of his gloominess as his attention is drawn to a few interesting things in the study.
He finally lays his eyes onto the large tube filled with a cloudy liquid and a mutated monster, this sight brings a mixture of awe, confusion, and a touch of fear to the boy's face.
The kid stares for a while more until he finally lets his curiosity free with his normal meekness, "Why is this lizard hooked up to life support?" using a term Singed has not once heard before.
"He was dying, I fixed it," The Doctor says with the apathetic bluntness he so likes using.
The kid leans his head to the side in confusion, "why was he dying, did he get hurt or something?" He asks, his face slowly regains the gloominess from before, "Did it get electrocuted?"
Doctor quickly draws a connection between the moodiness and electricity but says nothing of it, instead he decides to lay out why his pet was dying the best he could.
"This is Rio, she's a rare mutation I cultivated." He starts off only to be quickly cut off by Harry quickly snapping off another question with the still meek yet curious tone.
"What do you mean cultivated, how do you cultivate an animal?"
Doctor pauses at the intrusive question for a moment and then starts lightly smiling, this way of asking questions is so like his daughter's.
Anything she is confused by or grows curios with, she interrupts anything and everything around her to get the answer, he too was like that when he was younger as well. This thirst for knowledge needs to be cultivated itself.
Finding himself reminiscing of better times brings out a side of him so little see now, "wait and I'll tell you, back to the previous question."
He continues on, "Rio was born in the toxic fissures. She, like many other creatures born here and in the lake are influenced by the toxins and mutates. Most die, however, some become greater and evolve." He pauses to takes a breath.
"These evolved ones become easily adaptable to the toxins and harsh world around them. Rio here is one of these creatures, unfortunately she was unlucky and didn't completely adapt right."
The kid now completely mesmerized with the creature in front of him jumps up to the glass chamber now completely obsessed with it, "wow, this is so cool! She feels weird too!" He yells.
Doctor is confused with that comment for a moment before the kid continues with his questions, "Wait, how do these creatures survive and mutate? I got told that I would get sick if I played in toxic areas I would die, what makes them different?"
Doctor delves into answering this question, picking up the vial on his desk, "for a reason I presume is related to magic, some creatures when born in the toxic areas naturally start to produce a liquid unique to themselves."
Seeing the kid completely paying attention to him he continues, "these liquids are the things that mutate them, in fact the reason I obtained Rio is to research this liquid I called Shimmer is to see if the improving capabilities work on humans, and it does."
The kid yells out in excitement, "So it makes us better?"
He continues, his permanently monotone voice showing off a level of excitement barely achieved, "It does." He pauses while thinking of the possibilities of Shimmer and realizing that he has been distracted from his work. His previous demeanor dying quickly.
This kid has distracted him from his work, work that could very well be the answer to what he's been searching for during the past seven years.
The kid must go.
Doctor looks down at the kid, "leave, I must get back to my work."
The kid responds with confusion and steps back in physical whiplash from how quick the mood changed, "wh- what?
"Leave."
The kid slowly steps back towards the door, leaving as the door closes.
The Doctor steps back over to his desk when a feeling of wind surrounds him.
Working alongside Heimerdinger years ago made him very aware of greater beings and spirits, so he knows of the existence of Janna and the validity of all the tales and rumors of her, but in all his dreams he never once deigned the thought of her visiting him.
He turns around to meet her ethereal visage, "Spirit's wisdom, how might I be of service?" He asks with unnerving calmness.
"I am here to give my wisdom, turning that poor child away will do more harm than you realize," she snaps heatedly along with the distant sounds of thunder echoing from the surface showing a small glimpse of her power.
The doctor hums showing little care, "His well-being does not benefit me."
"Reveck," she grinds out his real family name, "If you help him and stop him from wandering off into the toxic fissures to be lost forever, then I will bless you with wisdom in your goal."
Reveck pauses for a second, his eyes flicker to a heavily locked door with a thoughtful expression, "I will help him, if you promise me, you will do whatever it takes."
Janna takes a deep breath, the pressure of the room shifting with it, "Fine, we have a deal."
Janna's body dissipates like a ghost as Reveck walks out the door to find the kid, returning after a few minutes.
As they walk in, the kid looking gloomier then when he arrived before, and Reveck looking pensive, he decides to finally attach a name to the kid, "what's your name?"
"Harry," Harry mumbles softly.
Reveck responds with, "I'm known by most as 'doctor.'"
Reveck goes back to his desk and continues work trying to ignore Harry's gloom, time passes and with it Reveck's ability to ignore Harry.
Finally, he snaps and turns slowly towards Harry, "Want to know what cultivation means?" He hums.
Harry's smile comes back slowly as they start back up with their conversation.
Reveck will do whatever it takes to gain his goal, be it ignoring ethics for advancing the boundaries of knowledge for his goal or making a deal with a spirit and being forced to care for a child.
He will do anything if it means saving her.

In the locked room, stood a glass chamber filled with cloudy liquid, not unlike Rio's, . In the chamber was a seventeen looking, scrawny, girl.
She looks as if a breeze would kill her.
