Prologue

In the dark, five children shivered in their nightshirts outside the wrought iron gate. A man fiddled with the lock. "All right, that should do it." He patted the lock nervously.

He turned to the children. "All right students, you should go home now." He wrung his hands. "I can't do anything more for you, I don't want to be enlisted in the army, I'm just a level 30 spirit elder, I don't wanna die!" He broke down into tears. The youngest girl touched his shoulder sympathetically.

After about a minute of crying, he wiped his face and composed himself. "I'm going now. You need to go too." He nodded, then abruptly stood and scampered away.

The oldest child, a brown-haired twelve year old boy, looked at the rest of the children. The youngest girl was just standing there, bewildered. Her twin brother took her hand protectively. The other boy was yawning. He looked at the last person, a girl only ten years old. His gaze lingered on her for a long moment. His dark eyes seemed to have a touch of softness in them, until he spoke.

"I'm going to get a wagon home. Bye."

The girl looked at his rapidly retreating back in disbelief. Yesterday at dinner, he had given her his carrots like he always did. He knew she loved carrots. He had even gifted her a cute little frog. Wasn't he supposed to hold her hands and say they would never be parted?

The tired boy sniggered. "He doesn't want to be saddled with a bunch of kids." He yawned again. "That idiot doesn't know it's well after midnight. He won't be able to get a lift. But I suppose only the twins can hear me." The girl had run off after the boy two sentences ago.

He shook his head and looked at the twins. "It's late, let's go back inside and sleep. Your parents live in the next town over, so I'll take you to them tomorrow."

They hesitated. The brother turned to the sister. "Big Brother Jeremy said Brother Shylock is weird."

"Big Brother is always right."

"We can't go with Brother Shy."

Shylock Menelaus pinched their ears. "Didn't I tell you not to call me Shy?" He released them. "Would you rather sleep outside?"

The twins simultaneously rubbed their ears and frowned. "No. It's cold."

"Then come inside." Shylock climbed over the gate. The twins looked at each other, then came to a decision and squeezed through the bars. They ran ahead to the dormitories.

Shylock couldn't pass up the chance to be sarcastic. "How secure!" He kicked the gate and went back to his room. Tomorrow, he would drop the children off at their parent's and get a lift back home. "Nice start to the war. What was it all about, anyway? Fighting for some kind of angel?"
