Kapitel 11: Chapter 10

5th Day, 2nd Moon, 111 A.C.

On that night, Baelon dreamed once again about the Valyrian gods, but instead of there being one or two of them teaching him the whole night as they had done in most nights prior to this one, they stopped a few hours before the morrow.

Just as Baelon seemed to understand that they wanted something from him, Arrax spoke up.

"We have come to a decision."

Just as he spoke, the imaginary room filled with all the other gods he had met, and even then, there was one he couldn't place right in his mind.

Before he could think more about her and who she must be, she spoke up in a harsh and clipped tone of voice.

"We will meet one day, but today is not the day that you need to be concerned with my divinity; today we came all to tell you about our decision about Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laena Velaryon."

"Don't scare the boy, Vhagar," spoke Tyraxes in a calm and even voice that somehow made Baelon feel calm under the weight of the thirteen pairs of eyes.

Just then he realized that there were only thirteen of them, but as far as he knew and had been taught by those gods themselves, there must be fourteen gods, the fourteen flames.

As he looked around to check if he already knew the god that was absent or if he was still to come, he heard the deep baritone voice of one of his most recent teachers.

"Ah, you are looking for our brother Balerion, but I do hope you don't want to meet him too soon. It would be tragic if our most prized student were to die so soon after we bonded with him."

Just as Vermithor spoke, it dawned on Baelon that if he would ever meet the last god of Valyria, it would be after he himself had breathed his last breath.

"But back to the topic, we have decided that we are okay with it as long as it's only those two."

With what are they okay? Baelon tried to remember if he had asked the gods something that he couldn't remember right now.

He was confused. Shouldn't he be able to remember everything in his life perfectly without error?

"Yes, you should be able to do that."

As Arrax said that, Baelon answered a bit irritatedly, "Would you mind stopping to read my mind? It is quite distracting and rude."

"Did the little shit just call us rude!?"

"Wait, Vhagar, don't kill him; he meant no disrespect; he is just confused about what we are talking about."

"I can see that; he still called me rude!"

"And you just yelled at him, so?"

Before the little spat between the two goddeses could escalate, Arrax spoke to Tyraxes and Vhagar. "Can you two keep it quiet for about 10 minutes?"

"So back to the topic, what we meant was that you have thought about telling your sister and cousin and maybe your mother about your bond with us and what it means for you. And we have decided that we are okay with you telling your sister whenever you want and your cousin after your wedding, which must be in Valyrian tradition. Your mother, on the other hand, does not have the same connection to you as your sister does, and we don't think you would want to marry her either, so you are not going to tell her, are we understood?"

"Yes, of course, but may I ask what is so special about the connection between siblings or the relevance of marriage between Laena and me before I can tell her?"

Just then, Meleys spoke up.

"Do you remember what I taught you about the Valyrian marriage and how it is consummated?"

"Yes, you said that it needs no sexual intercourse because the hearts and blood of two are joined as one during the ceremony."

"Yes, and what do you think that means?"

Well, as far as I know, after the ceremony, the marriage is accepted by law and by you as consummated and cannot be broken by anything but death.

"You are right, of course, but there is something else: if after the marriage one partner tells the other one a secret, they will not be able to speak about it with anyone that doesn't know about it. That's why in Valyria marriages could happen at the age of fourteen or even twelve, because it was consummated by vows and secured the safety of the various family secrets."

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"What would you have done as an eight-year-old with the knowledge that you could marry and not have to consummate in the ways accepted by the seven or the old gods or anything like that?"

"Okay, got it. You tell me things when you think I'm ready to hear them."

"Right you are."

"And what about Rhaenyra? Why could I tell her right now if I wanted?"

"She's your sister."

"And?"

"The love between siblings is enough that such secrets are reasonably safe."

"Only reasonably, why go to such lengths with Laena and not with Rhaenyra?"

"Would you ever tell one of them while the other doesn't know about it?"

"No, of course, not."

"So, why do you think we don't know that?"

"I don't understand; you would allow me to tell her, but you know that I would only do it after I'm married to her and Laena.

So that I would always have the temptation to tell her. Why would you risk that?"

"Boy, do you think we have no feelings? We get bored, just as humans do, even when it takes longer. In the end, we do, and between teaching you and Aegon, we had not much to do in 400 years, so we got bored."

Just then, Arrax spoke up again.

"What Meleys wants to say is that it will be good training for self-control; you will need it in the political landscape of King's Landing more than you think, so don't see it as us having fun; see it as you having to train."

"And what do I tell them if they ask about my new sword or the necklaces again?"

"You did good the first time, so I wouldn't worry about that."

"And what if they ask about the smith specifically? I cannot just go and tell them that I somehow found out how to reforge Valyrian steel out of nowhere."

"Well, you didn't reforge it from anything, did you? I mean, I taught you how to do it right from the base, didn't I?" Declared Vermithor right in the middle of the conversation.

"Yes, you did, but I don't think that is a better explanation for those who don't know, is it?"

"No, I guess it is not. Anyway, you will find something, and if not, then we will have to deal with that. Now we have to go over some things for your small council meeting tomorrow."

And just as suddenly as the thirteen gods had come, most of them faded away again, with only Arrax and Tyraxes remaining.
