Chapter 29: The Legend Of Uchiha Kaori
_____
"Hehe!"
Mito listened to Tsunade's complaint and, instead of sympathizing, burst into cheerful laughter. "Serves you right! You're finally at a disadvantage, aren't you?"
She continued, "Do you know who Uchiha Kaori is? Don't be fooled by her gentle demeanor and calm temperament. Only those who witnessed the Uchiha civil strife and saw her singlehandedly suppress the entire Uchiha clan can truly understand her dominance and strength!"
"This is a super genius—one whose talent may rival, or even surpass, mine! She's someone who has fiercely confronted your second grandfather multiple times over Uchiha matters."
"Even your second grandfather, as powerful as he was, couldn't do anything to her. He had no choice but to concede. Doesn't that remind you of someone else's level of dominance?"
At this, Mito sighed, a hint of nostalgia crossing her face. "If it weren't for the damage to her life force and soul from developing the Sharingan's forbidden techniques, and losing one eye in the process, her legend might have continued to this day. If that were the case, do you think the Third Hokage and his allies would dare to secretly suppress and bully the Uchiha all these years?"
She shook her head. "But judging by her willingness to meet with us, it's clear that her strength and vitality have fully recovered. Her decision to engage with us also shows she's open to negotiating terms. Whether we can reach an agreement is another matter, but I'm not worried."
Mito's tone softened briefly before returning to its usual sharpness. "After all, if even your second grandfather couldn't handle her, then why should I waste energy testing her further? She's already proven her worth."
Hearing this, Tsunade couldn't help but feel her earlier grievances melt away. She thought of how her second grandfather had been chastised by Kaori in the past and had no way to counter her. Suddenly, her frustration seemed trivial in comparison.
Comparison really does put things into perspective, Tsunade mused.
"Of course, Kaori-sama is powerful!" Tsunade added, a sly smile appearing on her face. "Otherwise, the old man—Monkey—and his friends wouldn't have been so cautious all these years, testing the Uchiha bit by bit!"
She continued, "When they suspected that Kaori-sama might have regained her peak strength, they immediately panicked. They didn't dare push back too hard against Uchiha reforms and even came running to you, hoping you'd test her strength on their behalf!"
Tsunade's smile widened mischievously. "But little did the old man know, not only do you have no intention of intimidating Kaori-sama, you're planning to form an alliance with her! Hehe!"
"I can't wait to see the look on his face when he finds out the truth—it's going to be priceless!" she said, her tone filled with anticipation.
Tsunade's frustration toward the Third Hokage and his policies surfaced as she spoke. She still harbored a deep grudge against him for his role in endangering her family and her clan. Revenge seemed only natural to her.
Her tone shifted, becoming more respectful as she said, "In light of Kaori-sama's legendary feats and her immense strength, I can't help but admire her. She's truly remarkable."
"Haha! Wait and see," Mito replied, chuckling. "It's time we made the old man suffer a little. Otherwise, he'll continue thinking we're easy targets! Hmph!"
"But," Tsunade said suddenly, her expression turning puzzled, "Grandma, why is Kaori-sama waiting twenty days before meeting you? Won't this delay the rescue of the Uzumaki clan?"
"I'm not sure," Uzumaki Mito admitted, shaking her head. "But if she's decided to wait, she must have her reasons. We'll simply have to be patient."
She continued, her tone reassuring. "As for the Uzumaki clan, you don't need to worry too much..."
"At present, the four major ninja villages are still in the phase of probing and gathering intelligence. There are no signs of troop mobilization yet. There should still be enough time," Mito said calmly.
"If it truly becomes urgent, I will take the initiative to meet Kaori in advance," she added. However, she frowned slightly. "But that would put us in a more passive position and could trigger unnecessary chain reactions. It might also raise undue suspicions among the Third Hokage and his allies."
For these reasons, Mito had decided that unless it was absolutely necessary, she would wait for Kaori to come to her on her own terms.
"Yeah!" Tsunade felt reassured after hearing this. "Since Grandma has already prepared for everything, I feel much better!"
She stretched, her tension easing, and said, "If there's nothing else, I'll go rest now. I'm exhausted! Today has been way too much!"
Tsunade had performed numerous surgeries at the hospital earlier, and upon returning, she had learned so many inside secrets and endured a series of psychological shocks. It had been an overwhelming day.
"Hehe! Go ahead and rest," Mito replied, waving her hand with a knowing smile.
You should experience more of these mental trials. It's the only way to grow up quickly! Otherwise, how can you stay so naive while leaving everything to an old lady like me?
---
Not long after Tsunade left the Uchiha compound, word of her visit reached the Third Hokage.
Unable to remain calm, Sarutobi Hiruzen immediately rushed to meet Uzumaki Mito and inquired about the progress of the matter.
"I've sent her an invitation," Mito said plainly. "She agreed but stated she won't meet me until 20 days later. So, wait."
She added with a sly smile, "Oh, and I've already tested her recovery indirectly. After Tsunade's confirmation, it's clear that Uchiha Kaori has fully regained her strength. She's not someone who's merely strong on the outside. Think about that carefully!"
Her tone took on a teasing edge as she concluded, "After all, you know very well that she isn't someone easily deceived. Hehe!"
Hiruzen couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Was it his imagination, or did Mito's laughter contain a hint of schadenfreude?
His mind raced with thoughts. It seems Lord Mito may have noticed some of the minor schemes we've used against the Senju in recent years. We'll need to tread carefully from now on.
More than that, Hiruzen couldn't shake the feeling that sending Mito to invite and assess Kaori had been a misstep.
What if Kaori's method of recovery could also be applied to Mito?
Unfortunately, Hiruzen didn't know the specifics of Kaori's condition, nor did he fully understand Mito's current state. Without this knowledge, he couldn't make a sound judgment.
"Ah, I'll just have to take things one step at a time," Hiruzen thought with a sigh.
He knew he couldn't stop Mito from meeting Kaori. Not only was it beyond his authority, but he also didn't dare to attempt it.
After all, Hiruzen had only been in power for nine years, and his position had only recently stabilized. He was not yet the future Third Hokage whose authority and prestige were unchallenged.
Especially with Mito and Kaori still around, his influence was far from absolute.
Once he had a clearer understanding of the situation, Hiruzen didn't linger long. He quickly bid Mito farewell and left.
For now, he decided not to inform Danzo or the others of his suspicions about Uchiha Kaori's full recovery.
If Danzo gets wind of this, who knows what reckless actions he might take? Hiruzen thought grimly.
Danzo had a history of acting without restraint, and Hiruzen was well aware of the risks. If Danzo learned of Uzumaki Mito's meeting with Uchiha Kaori, he might very well attempt to disrupt it.
If that happens, the consequences could be catastrophic.
Hiruzen shuddered at the thought. Danzo might even get himself killed!
