I stared at my hands, skeleton hands and trembling. Magic or superpowers? Those words came into my head, even though I didn't know their meaning.
I looked up and took in my surroundings. Houses and more houses, with two floors, white walls and green tiled roofs. I don't remember anything about this place, but... It feels so familiar.
Shit... I need my memories, I need to know what happened to me, I need to know who I am.
Tao... That's what they called me. But I don't feel like it's really me...
a memory came to me like a wave.
*THUMP*
*THUMP*
*THUMP*
*THUMP*
My heart began to beat intensely, accompanied by a cold sweat that ran down my back. "Avatar" That word had given me an unforgettable headache, but why? What was special about it? Maybe it had the answer to all this...
"SON!" A loud scream came from behind, the voice of my so-called father brought me completely out of my thoughts. I hadn't noticed me, but i had stopped running long ago.
"Shit" the word slipped out of my mouth. I looked around my entire field of vision and caught a glimpse of a nearby alley. I ran as best I could with my weak and tired body. Before I completely hid myself, I saw the figure of the man who was chasing me, strangely, every time I saw him I felt relieved.
"Huff" I let out a sigh of relief.
"I'm getting tired, I don't want to move anymore..." I muttered to myself. I leaned my back against the hard wall and dropped my body into a sitting position.
"Shit! My feet are dirty..." My bare feet made an appearance, I had been running on hard rocks with nothing on.
"I have to clean myself up, but wher-" a white hand closed my mouth without realizing it.
"Damn, I finally found you" I tried to vocalize words but only simple moans came out, this guy has a lot of strength.
A boy with a muscular body, white skin, big brown eyes, short brown hair and a huge smile.
"Shhh... Don't make any noise, they're looking for us..." The boy was squatting in front of me.
"W-what?" I tried to ask, I was finally able to ask, his grip loosened because he was focused on watching the street.
"We have to get out of here. The boss will be happy to see you" he murmured and finally released my mouth.
"Hahh... Hahh..." I started to take deep breaths.
"Don't make any noise, we'll go to the lair. Follow me" The unknown boy got up and cleaned his clothes from the dust, clothes of the typical color but somewhat lighter.
I watched as the tall guy started to walk further into the alley, but I didn't follow him. There was something strange about that man, I'm not sorry I've seen him before but he was also very familiar.
"Shit, what's wrong with you?" The boy came back quickly when he didn't see me.
"You... who the hell are you?" I pointed my index finger at him and asked for answers.
"What? Lost your memory or what, idiot?" He inched closer to me and waited for an answer, but it never came.
"Oh shit…" He grabbed his head with both hands and ruffled his hair, the smile on his face gone.
He looked one last time, as if asking for confirmation. I nodded.
With a determined look, the boy grabbed my wrist and led me into the alley.
"Wait-" I couldn't finish, my weak voice was overshadowed by his.
"I'm you... I was your best friend. My name is Jian, Jian Beifong." His words were cold, his face darkened.
The words slowly entered my ears.
"Best friend..." Without realizing it, I repeated the words he said until I reached...
"Beifong..." The sharp pangs that had disappeared from my head came back like a huge tsunami.
"Ahhhhgggg!" A loud cry came out of my mouth, I inadvertently broke free from Jian's grasp.. My body could not support my weight, I collapsed on the hard rocks and dust.
"S-shit... This is my fault..." It was the last thing I could hear from him before passing out.
.........
"Hmmm?" My eyes opened little by little, it was somewhat dark, I could only see a small source of light out of the corner of my eye.
"Where I am?" I murmured dryly, moistening my lips with my own saliva. The dark room did not seem large, with not much more than a bed and a small table next to it.
"So you're awake now." A deep voice came from outside, it wasn't Jian... He type of strong voice entered quietly. I raised my torso from the comfortable bed with some fear of what was to come.
And I saw him, a giant guy. I couldn't see everything because of the low light, but I did notice how his hair and long beard were dyed, his muscles are what stand out the most. He wears a dull colored short-sleeved shirt and a necklace with what appear to be fangs...
My body tensed, I clenched my fists tightly and braced myself for the worst.
"It seems that you seriously lost your memory..." The giant man let out a sentence that calmed my heart, maybe this man is "the boss".
"I am Zhao Wu, but you can call me "The Boss"." The man's voice was somewhat animated, I could see a small smile.
"I'll tell you what happened..." That sentence stopped my breathing, I froze. Would I finally know what the hell had put me in such a situation? My heart began to pump blood with greater power.
"2 months ago, you discovered your ability, your bending, I don't know how but you got it and trained it for 1 month. You were the missing key piece to the strategy that Jian had planned so that we could kill the Queen, a deadly force ..." With every word he said, the big man stopped looking me in the eye. "We had a way to infiltrate the Queen's temple... You were to kill her with your airbending, knock the air out of her lungs..." Zhao began stamping her foot on the floor in a steady rhythm.
"We were ambushed..." I felt sadness in his words, his voice was completely muffled. Without realizing it the pangs were coming back, each new information was an increase of pain in my poor head.
"You were the most exposed, the Dai Lee brutally repelled you... they almost killed you, we couldn't cover you..." Zhao's tapping stopped.
"Finally, Jian was able to get you out of there and you were in a coma for a month..."
I strongly pressed the sheets of the bed where I was, I felt as if my mind was going to explode.
And... I remembered, I remembered that tragic night. It would be the end of the Queen's tyranny, but they betrayed us and I ended up paying the price. All this seemed to be the answer I was looking for, however, I... I feel different. I am not the same as that night, impulsive, fearless and with a clear goal.
There's something... There's something wrong with me.
"Tomorrow, we're going to steal the Queen's tax receipts in a town south of here. You can come with us. It might help you remember more." And he just left the room leaving me alone with my thoughts.
