Kapitel 7: First Day of School

Phoebe was sick in bed for three days and over those three days, Aurelius had learned a lot. He had spent a lot of his time reading the human parenting books and when he wasn't reading the books he was watching and talking to Phoebe.

He learned that Phoebe's birthday was on February 2nd and that she was seven years old this year. He learned that her favorite color was red, that she loved apples, and hated cucumbers. She liked to read and was afraid of small, enclosed spaces. She liked fluffy animals and wanted to hug a fluffy fox. He learned so many small things about the girl, but he never felt annoyed by this interest in Phoebe, he felt happy to grow closer to the young girl. He liked spending time with her talking about anything and nothing.

The most important thing he learned was the importance of education. Education could provide Phoebe with the tools to be independent. Unfortunately for him, he knew nothing about the human education system and neither did the foxes, they would be unable to teach her important human knowledge. So, with a heavy heart, Aurelius spent some time and energy in finding the girl a school to go to. It took some time, but he managed to enroll the girl in a highly-rated school. Phoebe had missed the first week of school, but Aurelius had confidence that she would be able to integrate into the school easily.

Aurelius had Kiki and Min-Min collect all the necessary materials for Phoebe's school life: backpacks, pens and pencils, books, and more. When Phoebe's first day of school arrived, they were ready to help her succeed in school. That morning, he handed the girl a piece of paper that included the school map and indicated who was her teacher, Sadie Andrews.

Kiki and Min-Min were incredibly excited spending large amounts of time and energy to find the most perfect outfit for Phoebe's first day at school. They eventually chose a soft cream-colored blouse with large puffy sleeves and a delicate lace collar, paired with brown colored plaid pants. Her soft strawberry-blonde hair was pulled up into high ponytails with a large bow holding it in place. The foxes cooed at the girl complimenting her appearance and encouraging her to have a good day at school.

What Aurelius wasn't expecting was Phoebe's intense reluctance and resistance. He watched the foxes practically drag the girl outside to the bus stop. She was whining and crying, her arms locked tightly around Kiki's ankles. Aurelius had never seen Phoebe throw a tantrum like this and even though he had studied parenting books he was at a loss on how to calm the girl.

Ding!

[The Constellation, Ethereal Avian of Fiery Skies, says that he will follow you to school.]

This helped to calm Phoebe's tears long enough for Kiki to unlatch the little kola from her ankle and lead her to the bus stop. Phoebe's eyes were slightly damp, but the girl was attempting to show a brave face as she waited for the bus. It didn't take long for it to arrive, and she looked back at the two foxes that had disguised themselves, they waved to one another as Phoebe hopped on the bus and it drove away.

Phoebe was incredibly sulky the entire bus ride, she refused to interact with or talk to any of the kids on the bus. To be fair to Phoebe, not many kids were trying to talk to her, the kids felt a weird air of oppression surrounding her that made them very uncomfortable. They likely were feeling the presence of Aurelius who was trying his best to mitigate his aura but as an ancient constellation a fraction of his power still leaked out and scared the children.

After some time, the bus rolled up into a parking lot and opened the doors to let the kids out. Phoebe grumpily hopped out of the bus and looked up at the school in front of her, the sign read Sunnydale Elementary School. She huffed at the school before following the other children into the building. She marched to the two-hundred hall looking at the doors until she found a door covered in paper with several childish doodles on it framing the name Mrs. Andrews. She opened the door and was greeted by several faces turning to look at her, and a young woman walked away from a large desk towards her.

"Hello sweetheart, are you Phoebe?" The woman whom Phoebe guessed was Mrs. Andrews asked her gently.

Phoebe nodded her head and Mrs. Andrew clapped her hands happily smiling at the girl. She led Phoebe to the side where a row of cubbies was, and one of the empty cubbies had a brightly colored name tag with her name on it. Phoebe took her backpack off her shoulder and stuffed it into the cubby. Once Phoebe had put her bag away the teacher led her to the front of the classroom and clapped to call attention to herself.

"Ok, students we have a new classmate. Her name is Phoebe I hope you are all kind to her." Mrs. Andrews announced to the class earning a small round of applause. "Sweetheart why don't you sit in that empty seat by the window."

Phoebe looked to where the teacher was pointing and saw a cluster of four tables by the window one of these tables was not occupied. Phoebe hopped forward towards the group and took a seat at the empty desk.

Looking at the table each one had a handmade paper name tag with a variety of colors and images on the paper. Her new desk mates were two young boys and a small girl. On her right was the girl, her skin was deep tan like warm caramel, her brown hair was divided into two chunky braids, and she was dressed in a very cute green shirt and overalls. Phoebe waved slightly at the other kids only to receive a response from the girl.

"Don't worry you'll get to make a name tag too. Hi, my name is Hyacinth it's nice to meet you, Phoebe." Hyacinth leaned over to whisper to Phoebe.

Hyacinth lightly whacked the other two boys; they gave her an indignant expression, but she just glared slightly and urged them to introduce themselves. The first to talk was the Korean-looking boy, he sighed ruffing his hair slightly. The other boy was a mean-looking ginger.

"Hi, my name is Jiwoo." He replied slightly annoyed.

"Hi, my name is Aiden, and you're weird." Aiden snickered slightly.

Phoebe didn't quite like the cruel expression on Aiden's face, so she turned her head away from him ignoring his earlier provocation. She met Hyacinth's eyes and she saw the girl roll her eyes lazily at Aiden.

"Don't worry about Aiden he's a bit of a bully if he tries to do anything to you, I'll beat him up." Hyacinth boasted, looking incredibly confident in her abilities.

Mrs. Andrews clapped once more, calling attention to herself and the class quieted down to listen to her.

"OK students, today if you look at the schedule on the whiteboard you might have noticed that we are starting today with math." She announced as a groan rose from the children. "When I hand out the warm-up sheet you can either work on it together as a group or work on it alone quietly."

Mrs. Andrews ignored the groan of the children taking a small stack of paper from her desk and began passing them out to the groups. The paper was filled with subtraction and addition problems, the numbers were a mix of single and double digits with the final bonus problem being 27-18. When the teacher handed the paper to Phoebe, she lowered her body down to Phoebe's level and whispered in her ear.

"I wasn't sure of your knowledge so don't worry if you can't solve them all, I will use this to help you catch up to everyone in class later." She mused gently.

Phoebe nodded her head slightly. She reached for the cup at the center of the table group, it was filled with many different assortments of pens and pencils but just as she was about to reach a deft hand swooped in and snatched them away. Phoebe looked up to see the thief was Aiden as he wore a mischievous smirk on his face. Phoebe tried to reach for the pencils again, but Aiden just kept them out of her reach. After a few more attempts Phoebe had given up but luckily Hyacinth just handed her a spare pencil, so Phoebe was able to start.

Phoebe was slightly confused as she worked silently on the paper. She tried her best to remember the lesson that she had received at the orphanage but unfortunately for her someone didn't want to stop messing with her. As she worked Aiden continued to mess with her with incredibly petty actions. Phoebe was slowly getting more and more annoyed, she wanted to smack the boy, but she had to keep her temper in check, she didn't want to get in trouble.

Ding!

[The Constellation, Ethereal Avian of Fiery Skies, is annoyed at the boy Aiden.]

[The Constellation, Ethereal Avian of Fiery Skies, is growing angrier.]

Phoebe could feel a shift in the energy of the constellation behind her. The room grew colder, and Aiden's desk began to shake. Aiden looked around confused when suddenly the chair underneath him flipped over knocking the boy over and onto the ground.

Aurelius noticed the reaction of the rest of Phoebe's desk mates. Aiden had no idea what had happened, but Aurelius' aura had intimidated him slightly. Hyacinth looked around unable to pinpoint the origin of the strange phenomenon, but she did seem to realize that it was not natural. The most interesting of the human children was Jiwoo, his eyes immediately turned to Phoebe and the space behind her. Aurelius noted that unlike Phoebe he couldn't see his true form, but he was likely able to perceive him as a dark ominous shadow behind Phoebe. Aurelius' eyes twinkled with interest, this boy was interesting, and he would allow him to grow closer to Phoebe.
