There it was, Lira said, nodding toward the glowing outline of structures in the distance.
The Forgotten City.
Keiran paused in his stride, drinking it in. Even from afar, the city felt… off. It wasn't simply the ruin, the faint hum of energy carried in the air-it was this oppressive weight on his chest, a feeling that managed to seep into his soul.
"This place is alive," Keiran breathed, clutching the rod of iron tightly.
Lira gave him a sideways glance. Her face was taut. "Alive might be a strong word. The place is haunted, maybe."
"Comforting," Keiran muttered.
The Zenith System suddenly buzzed to life in his mind, her voice cold and detached:
[Warning: The Forgotten City houses high-level threats. Proceed with caution. Rewards: Rare items, experience, system upgrades possible.]
High-level threats?" Lira asked, noting his distant expression. "Your mysterious 'helper' giving you advice again?"
Keiran nodded. "Something like that. This place is dangerous."
"Of course it is. Nothing worthwhile comes easy," she said with a wry smile. "Let's keep moving.
The closer they got to the city, the more the air seemed to hum with energy. Strange markings covered the broken walls—symbols etched in stone that glowed faintly, pulsing like a heartbeat.
"Ever seen anything like this?" Keiran asked, running his fingers over one of the symbols.
Lira shook her head. "No. And I've been to my share of ruins. This… this is something else."
Keiran's Elemental Sense flared as he touched the symbol. For a brief moment, he felt a rush of emotions-fear, desperation, and an overwhelming sense of loss. He pulled his hand back as if burned.
"What is it?" Lira asked.
"This place remembers," Keiran said quietly. "Something terrible happened here."
Lira looked uneasy but didn't press further.
They walked through the broken gates, entering the Forgotten City. Inside, structures run from crumbling towers to building-like ones that almost appeared well-kept, as if time had passed them by. The streets were so silent that the only sound was the soft whistling of the wind.
"This place gives me the creeps," Lira finally admitted, placing her hand on the blade at her side.
"You are not alone," Keiran replied.
They hadn't gone much further when Keiran suddenly froze, his Elemental Sense prickling with warning.
"Something's here," he whispered.
Lira's hand tightened on her blade. "Where?"
Keiran closed his eyes, focusing on the energy surrounding them. He could feel it-a presence, dark and twisted, lurking in the shadows of a nearby alley.
"There," he said, pointing.
Before Lira could answer, a figure appeared. It seemed human at first, but as it stepped into the faint light, its grotesque features became clear: gray skin stretched tight over its bones, eyes aglow with unnatural light.
"What the hell is that?" Lira whispered.
"Trouble," Keiran said, raising his iron rod.
It let out a guttural hiss and began to move toward them, its movements jerky and unnatural.
Lira struck first, flashing a blade in a silver arc towards the creature. With an uncanny quickness, it dodged her and arced around her to lunge for Keiran.
Keiran swung his rod; when it hit the side of the creature, the force of it running up his arms was hard enough to sting. It barely appeared to notice, its glowing eyes locked on him.
"Keiran, move!" Lira yelled this time, deep slashing into the creature. A high-pitched shriek came from it before it collapsed.
Keiran took a shaking breath. "What was that thing?
"No idea," Lira said, cleaning her blade on the creature's tattered clothes. "But if there's one, there's probably more."
The Zenith System chimed in,
[Threat Neutralized. Experience Gained: 50. Potential Rewards: Analyze the corpse for additional insights.]
"Analyze the corpse?" Keiran muttered under his breath.
"What?" Lira asked.
"Nothing." Keiran crouched beside the creature, focusing on it as the System instructed.
The voice in his mind spoke once more:
[Analyzing… Analysis Complete. Enemy Identified: Wraithspawn. Corrupted remnants of the city's original inhabitants. Highly dangerous in large numbers.]
Keiran felt a chill run down his spine. "They used to be people."
Lira looked at him sharply. "What are you talking about?"
"These things… they're what's left of the people who lived here. They've been corrupted."
Lira's face darkened. "Let's hope there aren't too many of them left."
They navigated the city in caution now, every shadow a potential threat. The wraithspawn weren't the only dangers. Odd, glowing plants grew in places, emitting a noxious-looking mist that Keiran's Elemental Sense warned him to stay away from.
"This place really does not want visitors," Lira said, covering her mouth and nose as they passed a particularly dense patch of the stuff.
Keiran nodded, eyes scanning for movement.
They came to a stop at what seemed to be the central plaza. At its center stood an enormous statue of the very figure from the mural in the ruins-a figure commanding the elements, their sigil ablaze with brilliance.
"What do you think this place was?" Keiran asked.
"Looks like some kind of temple," Lira said. "Maybe this was their leader, or a god they worshipped."
The Zenith System buzzed again:
[Objective Updated: Investigate the Central Plaza. Possible Reward: System Skill Upgrade.]
Keiran's jaw clenched. The System was pushing him toward something, but he wasn't sure he liked where it was leading.
"We should check it out," he said.
Lira gave him a skeptical look. "You're awfully eager."
"Call it a hunch," Keiran said, stepping forward.
