Kapitel 8: nuclear energy

On the vast land of Siberia, an astonishing discovery made by a scientist shocked the world: Beneath Lake Baikal, there are 250 million to 300 million tons of oil and natural gas reserves, and the large coal mines in the surrounding area have even earned this land the reputation of being an "oil treasure trove". Ruby.Lee's destination was precisely this fertile land.

When he arrived, a huge refinery came into view. It was a kingdom of machinery, where the rumbling of machines and the white steam rising from the chimneys painted a magnificent picture of industrial civilization. Large transport vehicles were constantly coming in and out of the refinery gates, presenting a busy industrial scene.

Ruby.Lee parked his car by the roadside and climbed up a small hill ridge to overlook the refinery below. "The gasoline and natural gas stored here are probably more than I could consume in several lifetimes..." He calculated in his mind, a glint of greed shining in his eyes. "Just wait, all these resources will be mine!"

To avoid being too conspicuous during the day, Ruby.Lee chose to act under the cover of night. His body had been specially enhanced, and his vision and hearing were exceptionally sharp. He could see clearly even in the dark, which was crucial for his evacuation after completing the operation. After all, this was Russian territory, and if he were caught, the consequences would be unimaginable.

As night fell, Ruby.Lee drove slowly towards the oil and gas storage area. The refinery had a huge output, and there were at least 2 million tons of gasoline stockpiled here. He silently recited some cheesy lines in his mind as his fingers flitted about, taking all this gasoline into his space. "So much gasoline, enough for me to use for a lifetime." He muttered to himself, secretly feeling proud.

"If I were to sell this oil, I'd surely make a fortune." He fantasized that if he ever returned to his country one day, he must write an essay titled "I Contribute Oil to My Motherland", and it would definitely win the first prize.

Subsequently, Ruby.Lee turned his attention to the nearby open-pit coal mines and wood processing factories. He repeated the same process, taking these resources into his space one by one. He imagined that when the apocalyptic world came, he would be grilling barbecue and drinking beer at home while those owners were fighting over a moldy piece of bread, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction.

By chance, Ruby.Lee passed by a valley and discovered a military base. Relying on his sharp vision, he took advantage of the moment when the defenses were empty and secretly approached the base, taking all the supplies except the soldiers into his space.

The next day, there were still 25 days until the apocalyptic world arrived. Ruby.Lee realized that he couldn't stay in Russia any longer. Although it was inconvenient for him to show his face in Huahai City, he still had to go back in the end. He opened his phone and found the airport where he had arrived.

Several news notifications popped up on his phone, reporting the consecutive thefts in the Lake Baikal area of Russia and the news about the attacks on energy resources. Ruby.Lee shook his head, feeling helpless about these exaggerated headlines.

Two and a half hours later, Ruby.Lee returned to Huahai International Airport. To avoid attracting attention, he put on a mask, bought a bag of ham sausages, hailed a taxi, and returned to the vicinity of Huahai Yudi Community.

He still had to go to Sheng Tian Square to pick up Little Black. He wondered how Little Black had been these past few days. Ruby.Lee walked to the green belt where Little Black was hiding and called softly. Little Black came out wagging its tail, constantly rubbing against Ruby.Lee's legs and whining. Ruby.Lee quickly opened two ham sausages for Little Black and comforted it softly.

"Still need to find a place to live first..." Ruby.Lee decided to rent a house in Huahai Yudi Community. He dialed the number on the rental information sign and reached an agreement with the landlord to pay 60,000 yuan per month. The landlord took Ruby.Lee upstairs. It was a three-bedroom house on the 29th floor of Building 5. The two happily signed the contract, and Ruby.Lee got the keys.

Standing by the window, Ruby.Lee was truly entering a house in the community for the first time, admiring the beautiful view of the river-view house. "It really lives up to its reputation as a famous river-view house in Huahai City. The scenery above the great river is all in sight." He noticed the terrain of Sheng Tian Square and planned to set up his safe house there when the apocalyptic world came.

Huahai Yudi Community was directly opposite Sheng Tian Square, and across the square was the famous great river. Ruby.Lee noticed that Sheng Tian Square was only a little over 300 meters away from the community, with flat terrain, and his safe house was quite large. This square was just the right place to set it up. In this way, it was close to the community, and it would be convenient for him to take revenge when the time came.

Ruby.Lee calculated in his mind. The owners in the community usually looked extremely refined, full of petty bourgeois sentiment. But in the apocalyptic environment, they would be the most inhumane. Such people were often sophisticated egoists. They only cared about getting benefits for themselves, and the lives and deaths of others had nothing to do with them.

Huahai City, this prosperous metropolis, had a population that had swelled to 40 million. Among these people, there were less than 2 million true native Huahai people, and the rest had gathered here from all over the country, hoping to find their place in this city. However, only a few hundred or a few thousand people truly held wealth and power. Most people were just ordinary laborers at the bottom of the city's pyramid.

Huahai Yudi Community, an upscale community with housing prices as high as 100,000 yuan per square meter, had only one-third of the residents as owners, and the rest were tenants. To the outside world, they seemed to be of extraordinary strength living in such a luxurious community. But in fact, many of them had meager incomes, lived a tight life, and even couldn't make ends meet.

These people considered themselves elites, but they often despised the poor and loved the rich, being sophisticated egoists. They looked down on those who were less well-off than themselves, forgetting that they were just ordinary members of this city. Ruby.Lee had a deep understanding of this. He remembered the difficulties and contempt those people had once shown him.

Ruby.Lee once again examined his space and carefully read the instructions for using the safe house. The apocalyptic world was about to arrive, and he needed to ensure that he was fully prepared for the upcoming challenges. The instructions for the safe house mentioned that it would automatically deploy a stabilization system, with the underground three floors sinking into the ground and automatically extending sewage pipes. What surprised Ruby.Lee the most was that the energy source of the safe house came from a nuclear energy pod, which not only provided energy for the entire safe house but also had no risk of leakage or radiation.

"Nuclear energy?!" Ruby.Lee was pleasantly surprised to find that the gasoline and coal he had painstakingly collected before might not be needed. This discovery made him breathe a sigh of relief. At least he didn't need to worry about the energy problem anymore.

Ruby.Lee decided to go to supermarkets and pharmacies to buy some necessities first. He prepared food and water for Little Black and then set off. In the supermarket, Ruby.Lee pushed two shopping carts and grabbed whatever he saw along the way. But he soon realized that at this rate, it would take him a long time to buy enough of the things he wanted. He even considered taking the entire supermarket into his space directly, but in the end, he decided to buy some urgently needed items first.

Ruby.Lee wanted the people in the community to see that he was hoarding supplies so that when the apocalyptic world came, they would know that Ruby.Lee had supplies here. He found the person in charge of the supermarket, gave him a list of supplies, left his phone number and address, and paid a deposit. Then he went to the pharmacy and left a list of the required medicines.

In the apocalyptic world, food and medicines were the most important. Especially antibiotics, in extreme environments, any small wound could develop into a fatal injury. Ruby.Lee still remembered the painful lesson from his previous life and didn't intend to repeat it.

Ruby.Lee also bought some medicines to strengthen his body. After all, the 500T of adult technology learning materials on his hard drive were no joke. He needed to keep his body healthy to face future challenges.

"Speaking of which..." Ruby.Lee muttered to himself, "I have plenty of money now. Before the apocalyptic world comes, I should enjoy myself a bit."

He hailed a taxi and went to an upscale consumption venue in Huahai City. There, he indulged himself until there was only 6.7 million yuan left on his bank card. He didn't feel sorry about it because to him, this money was just like passing clouds.

Walking on the street, Ruby.Lee looked at the bustling crowds and prosperous streets and couldn't help but sigh in his heart. In another 24 days, everything here would be frozen, and those people he had just interacted with might never be seen again. Humans are ultimately insignificant in the universe. A single decline period of the sun could cause the extinction of most living things on Earth.

But Ruby.Lee had already looked down on all of this. Having lived two lives, he had witnessed the coldness of human nature. In this life, he would no longer be soft-hearted towards anyone. His heart was as cold as a frozen fish that had been frozen for eight hundred years.

Just as Ruby.Lee wanted to take one last look at this prosperous world, he noticed that someone in the crowd not far away had spotted his trail. That person whispered a few words into the earpiece and then followed Ruby.Lee. Slowly, a dozen or so people with sharp eyes gathered around Ruby.Lee. Of course, Ruby.Lee had already sensed all of this.
