Kapitel 53: Chapter 53: Not Learning Chidori, but Swordsmanship?

Ninja blades all started as ordinary swords?

This was something Sasuke truly didn't know. He had always assumed that only blades forged from special materials could channel chakra.

The Seven Ninja Swords of the Mist, Asuma's trench knives, and even Sasuke's future Kusanagi Sword all of them could channel chakra.

"Typically, there are only two ways to channel chakra through a weapon. The first is by using a ninja blade," Kakashi began.

"And do you know the second method?"

Kakashi's question left Sasuke momentarily silent. Instead of answering, he reached into his ninja pouch, pulled out a kunai, and activated Lightning Release: Discharge.

Electricity crackled from Sasuke's hand, wrapping itself around the kunai.

Seeing this, Kakashi was genuinely surprised.

"It seems you've already mastered the second method," Kakashi remarked.

"Indeed, if you possess a high enough level of chakra control, you can momentarily imbue a weapon with chakra by channeling it through a jutsu," he continued. "This temporarily enhances the weapon's power."

Sasuke deactivated the technique, causing the lightning surrounding the kunai to dissipate.

Kakashi eyed Sasuke curiously. "What was that technique you just used?"

"That? It's a new Lightning Release technique I developed by simplifying Shinsoku (Godspeed). I call it Lightning Release: Discharge."

"A technique you simplified and developed yourself?"

Creating new jutsu wasn't something anyone could casually accomplish. Even Kakashi, who had copied over a thousand jutsu, had only ever created Chidori.

"You didn't use hand seals. Is that technique completely seal-free?"

"Correct," Sasuke replied. "It's purely about mastering Lightning Release transformation and conditioning my body to remember how to do it."

Sasuke made it sound simple, but channeling chakra through different parts of the body, while simultaneously applying nature transformation to turn it into elemental energy, was anything but easy.

From what Kakashi observed, Sasuke seemed capable of releasing lightning from any part of his body without issue.

Could it be… Sasuke's mastery of Lightning Release was already superior to his own?

"Alright, Sensei, let's get back to discussing chakra blades," Sasuke said, snapping Kakashi out of his thoughts.

"Oh, right," Kakashi replied.

"All chakra blades start as ordinary weapons. What makes them ninja blades is the fact that their users repeatedly channel chakra through them over a long period of time," Kakashi explained.

"Just like what you did earlier using Lightning Release to coat the kunai," Kakashi began.

"If you continue using this kunai for a long enough time and do so properly, without damaging its internal structure with chakra, then eventually, this kunai could also become a ninja blade!"

"At that point, all you'd need to do is inject your chakra, and the blade would automatically transform it into Lightning Release chakra for you," Kakashi explained.

Sasuke stared at the kunai in his hand, momentarily stunned.

So that's how it worked? Ninja blades were created this way?

"Of course," Kakashi continued, "there are now materials discovered to have a special affinity with chakra. Weapons forged from these materials are also classified as ninja blades."

"But such materials are incredibly rare and outrageously expensive often unavailable even if you have the money to buy them."

Sasuke wasn't really listening anymore. Instead, he was focused on the kunai in his hand.

This was just like in the world of pirates, where ordinary swords could become black blades through the wielder's mastery of Haki.

Seeing Sasuke suddenly lost in thought, Kakashi could guess what he was thinking.

"You're probably considering forging your own ninja blade, aren't you?"

"That's a fine idea," Kakashi said, "but there's something you should know about why ninja blades are so rare."

"First, with something like this kunai, even the slightest misstep in using your chakra could destroy its internal structure, making it impossible for it to become a ninja blade."

"Trying to forge a ninja blade out of ordinary materials is like using a thin steel wire to lift a thousand-pound weight. You can imagine how difficult that would be."

"So, if someone wants to create their own ninja blade, they typically start with a weapon forged from the hardest materials possible. This makes it less likely for chakra to damage its internal structure, giving you more room for trial and error."

"But here's the catch. If the blade is too hard, your chakra won't be able to affect its internal structure at all, making the process of turning it into a ninja blade exponentially harder."

Kakashi sighed, remembering his own past.

"I once tried to forge my own ninja blade. I spent years on it... and failed every single time."

"Not once did I succeed."

"I can teach you sword techniques, but creating a ninja blade? That's something you'll have to figure out on your own," Kakashi concluded, watching the gleam of determination flash in Sasuke's eyes.

The difficulty of creating a ninja blade was astronomical. Just think about it why were there only seven legendary blades in the Hidden Mist Village? The answer was clear: the process was nearly impossible.

Kakashi had shared all of this to dissuade Sasuke from pursuing such a daunting task.

After all, Sasuke's talent with Lightning Release was extraordinary.

Rather than focusing on swordsmanship, Kakashi thought it would be more beneficial to teach Sasuke another jutsu: Lightning Release: Chidori.

But Sasuke had already learned it, something Kakashi was unaware of.

"So right now, swordsmanship won't be of much help to you. If you want to strengthen your close-combat ability and achieve a one-hit kill," Kakashi offered, "I could teach you another Lightning Release technique. I think you'd really"

"No!" Sasuke interrupted firmly.

Sasuke shook his head firmly.

"I want to learn swordsmanship!"

Seeing the determination and excitement in Sasuke's eyes, Kakashi couldn't help but feel like he had just shot himself in the foot.

Hadn't he explained enough already? Why was Sasuke so insistent on fixating on swordsmanship?

Unbelievable.

If he had known this was going to happen, Kakashi thought, he should have just gone straight to explaining how powerful Chidori was instead of bringing up all that stuff about swordsmanship and ninja blades.

Now he was stuck.

With a sigh, Kakashi pulled a scroll out of his ninja pouch.

"If you're so dead set on learning swordsmanship, then take this first," Kakashi said, handing the scroll over.

"This is the swordsmanship technique of the Hatake Clan. If you can understand it and manage to master it before we return to the Hidden Leaf, then come find me, and I'll teach you swordsmanship."

"But if you can't learn it, I won't teach you swordsmanship at all."

"Your only other option will be for me to teach you my other Lightning Release jutsu, Chidori. This technique"

"Don't worry, Kakashi-sensei!" Sasuke interrupted, his confidence unwavering. "I'll definitely master it!"

Kakashi: "…"
