Kapitel 14: Beneath the Eel's Smile

Daniel placed the glowing orb on Eko's table, its faint pulsation casting eerie shadows in the dim lair. The scavenger's grin widened, his slick, eel-like body curling closer to the object.

"Ah, my lovely shard," Eko hissed, caressing the orb with a strange reverence. "You've done well, little guppy. Very well indeed."

Daniel's fins twitched with irritation. "We held up our end of the deal. Now tell us what you know about the ruins."

Eko's grin remained fixed, but his eyes darted toward Mira, who stood silently by the entrance, her gaze sharp and untrusting. "Patience, patience," he cooed, flicking his tail. "Such haste ruins the flavor of a good transaction. But fine—my word is my bond."

He motioned to a crudely drawn map on the wall, the parchment brittle and water-stained.

"This," Eko began, tapping a clawed finger on a location marked with a jagged swirl, "is where I've heard whispers of the Abyssal Nexus. Dangerous waters. Deep, dark, and full of secrets that don't want to be found."

Daniel studied the map, his system capturing the details for later reference.

[New Map Location Recorded: Abyssal Nexus (Unconfirmed).]

"Anything else?" Daniel asked.

Eko's grin faltered for the briefest moment. "Only this: If you're determined to seek it out, beware. The Nexus isn't just a place; it's alive. And it doesn't take kindly to visitors."

Mira stepped forward, her voice low and cold. "Why help us, Eko? What's in it for you?"

Eko's laughter bubbled like escaping air. "Oh, Mira, always so suspicious. Let's just say I have an interest in seeing what happens when guppy here starts stirring the pot. The Abyss loves a bit of chaos, don't you agree?"

Daniel's unease grew as they left Eko's lair, the shard's faint glow still imprinted in his vision.

"He's hiding something," Daniel said, breaking the silence.

Mira nodded. "Of course he is. Eko never plays straight. And that shard you gave him? It's more than just a 'trinket.'"

"Then why let him keep it?"

"Because taking it back would mean killing him," Mira replied bluntly. "And that would bring every scavenger in Tidecall down on us."

Their path through Tidecall's coral-strewn alleys was uneventful until they neared the settlement's edge. A figure stepped from the shadows—a sleek, armored creature with piercing yellow eyes.

"Mira," the figure said, its voice sharp and commanding. "We need to talk."

Mira stiffened, her fins flaring slightly. "Not now, Veltran. I'm busy."

Veltran's gaze shifted to Daniel, his eyes narrowing. "Busy dragging around another outsider? You're playing a dangerous game."

Daniel bristled. "What's your problem?"

Veltran ignored him, focusing solely on Mira. "You know the rules. Outsiders bring trouble. If the elders find out—"

"The elders don't control me," Mira snapped. "And this 'outsider' has more guts than half of Tidecall combined."

Veltran's jaw tightened, but he stepped aside. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

Once Veltran was out of earshot, Daniel glanced at Mira. "Who was that?"

"Old friend," she muttered, her tone clipped. "And a reminder that Tidecall isn't as safe as it seems."

As they left the settlement, Daniel's system pinged with a sudden notification:

[Skill Acquired: Abyssal Perception.]

[Details: Enhances awareness of hidden threats and faint energy signatures.]

"What triggered that?" Daniel wondered aloud.

Mira glanced at him, her expression unreadable. "Maybe the shard. Or maybe the Nexus is already reaching for you."

The journey toward the marked location on Eko's map took them through increasingly treacherous waters. The vibrant coral gave way to barren stretches of rock and sand, the light growing dimmer with every passing hour.

"Feels like the ocean's holding its breath," Daniel said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mira nodded. "We're close to the Abyssal Trench. Nothing good comes from this place."

Suddenly, Daniel froze. His newly acquired Abyssal Perception flared, a sharp jolt of awareness coursing through him.

"We're being followed," he said.

Mira's eyes darted around. "Where?"

Daniel focused, the faint energy signature becoming clearer. He turned just in time to see a familiar face emerge from the shadows.

Veltran.

But his expression was no longer one of warning. It was predatory.

"Veltran?" Mira asked, her voice laced with disbelief.

Veltran smirked. "I warned you, Mira. But you never listen. Now, hand over the map—and the guppy—or things get messy."

Mira's fins flared. "You're working with Eko, aren't you? You've always been a coward, but this—"

"Cowardice?" Veltran sneered. "Call it pragmatism. The Abyss rewards those who play the long game. And you? You've always been too reckless."

Veltran lunged, his movements swift and practiced. Mira intercepted, their bodies colliding in a flurry of strikes.

Daniel hesitated for a fraction of a second before diving into the fray. Veltran was fast, his strikes calculated and precise, but Daniel's system fed him critical data:

[Enemy Detected: Veltran – Skilled Combatant.]

[Weakness: Overconfidence in direct engagements.]

Using Hydro Dash, Daniel maneuvered behind Veltran, landing a solid hit with Piercing Surge. The blow sent Veltran tumbling, but he recovered quickly, his yellow eyes blazing with fury.

"You've improved, guppy," Veltran snarled. "But you're out of your depth."

The battle intensified, the water around them churning with the force of their attacks. Veltran's agility kept him on the offensive, but Daniel and Mira worked in tandem, their coordination slowly turning the tide.

When Veltran faltered for a moment, Mira seized the opportunity, landing a devastating strike to his side. He let out a pained growl, blood seeping into the water.

"This isn't over," Veltran hissed, retreating into the shadows. "The Abyss watches, Mira. And it's hungry."

As silence returned, Daniel and Mira exchanged a glance.

"Why would he betray you?" Daniel asked.

Mira's expression hardened. "Because in this world, trust is a liability. And I've learned that lesson too many times."

Daniel nodded, a cold resolve settling within him. If the Abyss truly was watching, then he'd make sure it saw him rise—not fall.
