Kapitel 186: Boggs 1 295 AC

He glanced through his Teelescope, noting the position of the enemy forces. The worthless rabble had assembled to stop him seizing their port, apparently led by some self-proclaimed Pirate King.

He had to say, he was not impressed. Oh, they had numbers certainly, forces drawn up from around the Basilisk Isles, but they were as he thought, little more than a rabble. There might be some sparse hope for their summer Islander allies on the opposite flank, but even they were just sailors and seemed ill-suited for ground warfare, not forming appropriate ranks he would expect from even Essosi mercenaries.

"I always find myself quite astounded by the Prince's foresight, in matters not regarding his betrothed at least." He shut the Teelescope, setting it to his side. "Raise the flag to signal that we are going to refuse them the left flank. With their forces so unruly, they will no doubt expose their own side to our artillery in turn."

"Yes, Governor Boggs."

"General Boggs for the moment if you would be so kind Captain, the Prince likes his hierarchies clean and organized after all. I'll likely be governor again only when I've finished driving this slime out of their hiding holes."

"My apologies General, I will see to it that the flag is raised at once."

"Good then, see to it."

He turned his eyes from the immediate battle to the coast, and the maritime siege which was continuing as planned, the distant thunder of guns and plumes of smoke rising in the distance evidence of the continued bombardment of the city proper.

Truly, the fiercest power of the Princedom of the Stepstones lay at sea, as was perhaps natural for its status, He doubted that pushing inland to the city of Monsters, dread Gorgossos, would be so easy.

The Prince had the same thought, which is why he had the might of the army of the Stepstones, in addition to the Marines, at his beck and call, whereas Admiral Aurane was left with only the Marines and his larger naval forces to prosecute his war in the Disputed Lands, not that he needed as many forces. By all news, few were even trying to resist the inexorable spread of the Princedom in the old lands of the Triarchy, indeed there had even been a delegation sent from Volon Theryys, rumored to be discussing it's future annexation by the Princedom in exchange for protection from the civil wars wracking the region around Volantis. It was all taking far more land for the jumped-up bastard to govern as far as he was concerned. Not that he thought the man incompetent for his poisonous birth. No, Admiral Aurane had long disabused the other governors of any rumor of incompetence or undue nepotism on his part.

Still, he thought it a tad unfair that the already favored lieutenant was also granted the easiest campaign.

Lost in thought, he was woken from his thoughts by the sound of less distant cannons. As predicted, the Rifles and Grapeshot of his men were driving the pirates back into the thickets, leaving bloody mounds of corpses behind them where they had tried and failed to breach the lines. There was little sense in it, throwing their lives away in such a manner, and he was surprised more of the criminals didn't take the same path as that Sal-Kaeron fellow who had accompanied his fleet as a negotiator. A prison sentence and service were surely better than the Gibbet after all.

'Oh well. Hard enough to get most of the men to bathe with any regularity, much-less pirates.' Boggs carefully avoided the thought that he himself had not bathed nearly so frequently before entering into the service of the Prince, where it was standard when possible. It did certainly stop the army smelling like quite so much a pigsty.

"Sir, Message from the Prince." an aide ran up, carrying a small letter, nodding, he snatched it from the boy's hand, waited for his salute, and then turned to open it.

It bore the seal alright, and the Stag too, so it was Royal business instead of Military or Company business. That was intriguing. He had expected to stop receiving such things as frequently when not a governor.

'An… apology. Ah, I see.' The letter explained that the prince did not intend to invite him to his wedding, despite believing him more than respectable enough to be present there. It was entirely sensible, given the current situation, but he had to chuckle lightly at the fact that the Prince himself had given him the assignment, and surely he had known his own wedding was coming.

'Or did he…' Boggs rose an eyebrow as he read the rest of the letter's contents, especially the specific location of the event.

'King's landing ey? I wonder what the dragonslayer wants from him?' Boggs chuckled, placing down the letter on the small camp table next to his seat, and turning his eye back out over the battlefield again, where it seemed his men had largely driven the enemy back to the walls of the port.

'Well, none of my business.' He stood from his chair, stretching, yes, this style of command suited him well.

"Prepare to move up the artillery corps. I want that town taken by supper."
