The feast, as it was, was excellent, well-prepared meats and good cheese, along with a fine selection of vegetables and other side dishes.
It was clear that Shireen had begun learning etiquette while I was gone, and it was adorable seeing her trying to eat properly and failing to do so, a childish frown of frustration on her face as her fork kept clattering on the plate.
The conversation was lively, and my siblings quizzed me endlessly on my adventures, and on the strange things I had seen, tales that I was quite happy to tell.
Then, finally, the question came up.
My mother was the one who raised it.
"Arthur… you had mentioned that your greyscale was cured in your letter, but you did not say how."
The question was implied, and I swallowed my food before responding.
"Well, the men will tell you it happened on the island." I said gingerly, tugging at my collar, "but you're right to think there's a bit more to it than that. We should probably discuss it in private."
My mother nodded, gesturing for my siblings to join us as we went into one of the side rooms, shutting the servants out.
"So?" She asked, and I breathed deeply.
"During the storm, and yes, we ended up getting dragged right through the middle of it, I hit my head when I was thrown around the cabin." I nodded gently, it wasn't something I wanted to share, but it was something I had to be forthright about. They were my family. " I was unconscious for more than a day, and I had a vision in my sleep," I said carefully, seeing the light flash in my mother's eye. She was a faithful woman after all. I sighed. "As far as I could tell, it was not one of the seven."
That made her go a little pale, and I stopped, but after a moment she nodded that I should continue.
"I found myself in a great stone chamber, with the walls covered in statues the whole place was full of water, but I could breathe fine, or rather it felt that I didn't need to breathe at all." I glanced at my siblings, who seemed content to listen quietly. "At the center of the chamber was a great globe which held a map of the world, and all the continents of it, I could see Westeros near the top, and Essos as well, and Sothoryos and Ulthos and other continents without names. I tried to copy the map when I woke up, so I have some fair idea of where they all are, I may discover them myself someday. But, the vision did not stop there, " I grimaced, the next part was the most probably heathen. "One of the statues awoke, emerging from the stone, a great merman, perhaps 40 feet tall freeing himself from his prison, he spoke to me, in a voice like lightning, I cannot remember all he said, but at the end of it, he struck me with lightning from his staff." My mother seemed to shiver at that, but I continued nonetheless.
"When I awoke, my body was changed, the greyscale retreated back, as if a fire before a wave, at the touch of the lightning, and ever since the lightning has kept flowing through my blood," I reached out, tapping the iron doorknob, which caused an audible Crack as the static passed between us. "I can ground myself to prevent from shocking others, but not much past that."
"Whoooa…" Edric said, "Do it again!"
"Edric!" My mother said, turning her eyes his way and then sighing, before turning back to me. "Do you know what it was, the creature you saw?"
"Not really." I said frankly, "Though I half suspect it may be my ancestor, the God of the Sea who fathered Elenei, the wife of Durran the First and thus the grandfather of the Baratheons." I shrugged my shoulders. "Beyond that, I know nothing, the creature looked as mermen are described, but I cannot say if it truly was one, or some statue brought to life by lightning."
My mother nodded, holding her hand to her breasts.
"Tell no-one of this for now." She finally said, after a long pause. "We will decide our course when your father returns."
I nodded at that, it was a reasonable command, and besides, I had no intention of spreading rumors.
My mother nodded in return, then went to make sure my siblings did the same. I almost left, leaving her to her melancholy and thoughts, but at the last moment, I turned back, instead deciding on hugging her in her chair, which elicited a frightened yelp before she realized what I was doing.
I could only feel warm as her hand patted my back.
"Oh, foolish child, did you think I would hate you because of the work of things beyond your control?" She stroked my back as she spoke, and I smiled, It was true, I had feared her reaction. "I do not, and I will not, love is not so easily broken."
I smiled at that, pushing off the woman, who nodded towards my siblings.
Edric for his part seemed to be staring at me with starry eyes, but I wasn't quite sure what the look on Shireen's face meant.
"Shireen?" I asked, stepping towards her, but she moved back a little.
"It's not going to hurt you Shireen, come on, just let me give you a hug."
She stared at me with wide eyes for a moment, before she nodded, her words coming all at once "buttheseptasaysthatmagicisbadandthehellsnd"
I quickly wrapped my arms around my sister, patting her back gently.
"It's not going to hurt you, Shireen, really it isn't."
My sister sniffed slightly, before nodding her head on my shoulder.
"There now, see, it's ok." I said gently, "It's all gonna be ok."
At least I hoped it would be.
