Kapitel 46: Arthur XVII

292AC

I watched the Ravens as they departed Sunspear, heading north towards Kings Landing and Dragonstone respectively. They carried letters informing my family of the attack, though they already knew about Viserys being brought into the cult, or at least my father did.

Doran's willingness to share that information I would suspect had more to do with pulling my Uncles gaze away from Dorne, and frankly, I could accept that, no reason to weaken the power base of the young woman I suspected I might end up marrying.

Hell, it might even be right that Viserys had ordered the cult against me, or more likely whoever his patron was.

But something rubbed me the wrong way about the whole thing. The priest hadn't acted like a hired assassin, but more like a true believer, sure he could have been ordered to kill me, but it seemed to me like he truly believed I was a demon.

I rubbed at the grayscale on my neck. It had not bothered me for some time, save for how others saw it, but it might well be enough to taint me in the eyes of the cult. I couldn't remember what they had thought of Shireen in the books, but then Melisandre was hardly a typical R'hllorite, being from Asshai on the Shadow.

I glanced down from the Ravens to the docks, where my ships were now on full alert for the foreseeable future. I had another two days in Sunspear before we left, and they would likely be remaining alert well after that. Private Robert, who's quick thinking and aim had bailed me out earlier, was to be elevated to knighthood at the earliest possible point at least if I had my way.

I smiled at the thought, knights as a rank would likely long survive their actual role on the battlefield, just like in my old world's England, but for now, at least it would still have some meaning and proper benefit for the man.

My thoughts turned to the Prince of the keep himself as I moved away from the window. Doran was another bag of worms, whether he actually wanted me betrothed to his daughter was anyone's guess at this point, and I could hardly trust his men to keep me safe after this afternoon. He himself seemed unlikely to want to kill me, however, especially with how much he might be trying to avoid crown attention.

Still, if what he said was true, and he was only pretending to be against the betrothal, he really ought to come clean with Arianne. While she had plenty of her own issues, including, it seemed, a constant desire to bare her midriff and show off her other assets as much as allowed, she was still mature enough that she could probably at least understand the reasoning, though she might still be mad that she was lied to.

Thinking on that, I decided that I should probably tell her about it myself, given how poorly she reacted to her father's prior misinformation.

This is mind, I made my way down the halls to her chambers, to speak with her about her father, and his deceit regarding the betrothal.

Best to nip that misunderstanding in the bud after all.
