Bai Yi smiled and pressed the tentacles that had appeared on his face back into place. The surge of excitement he felt easily overpowered the malicious invasion within him.
What exactly is the nightmare world? It's a place formed from the despair, pain, and thoughts of the living beings, governed by a unique rule that creates a meta-time and space.
What are "evil thoughts"? They are monsters born from the collective malice of the world. Their primary method of growth is to consume blood and negative emotions.
In other words, Bai Yi, who was infused with evil thoughts, didn't fall into the nightmare world in despair. Instead, he entered a world of delicious food, one built on his cravings.
To others, the "Embrace of Pain" mask in his hand symbolized despair and grotesqueness, but to Bai Yi, it was top-tier sustenance!
Bai Yi's scarlet eyes locked onto the mask. The illusory soul behind it had curled into a ball. As Bai Yi's evil thoughts fully erupted, the mask began to tremble, and a sense of pleading began to emanate from it.
Everything within this sub-space is real, even the strongest beings are reproduced one-to-one. But the core of this world still lies in the extreme despair and sorrow of the Plague Doctor's death, cursed by the Black Death.
Perhaps even the alchemist who first created the "evil thoughts" never imagined that these would evolve into a form of god after entering the nightmare world.
Bai Yi reached out and peeled away a layer of skin from the mask. The face of the man that had been there was easily torn off, revealing a pure white faceless mask beneath. At the same time, the illusory soul behind it completely vanished into the concave surface, turning the mask into what seemed like a harmless, ordinary object.
Bai Yi brought the "Embrace of Pain" closer and sniffed it. A faint, corrupt odor was discernible. Suddenly, the mask began to tremble more intensely, vibrating and emitting a faint buzzing sound.
Fang Heng, still sitting on the ground and silently crawling away, was overcome with even greater fear. He moved back, trembling, and whispered urgently, "Headquarters, headquarters… you may not believe this, but I saved an S-level dangerous creature from an A-level one. Please tell Lina I might not make it back."
Bai Yi's eyes narrowed in thought. Though the thing in his hand seemed unwilling to resist him, he had sensed a terrifying sense of danger when he brought it close to his mouth.
This gave Bai Yi some insight into the power of evil thoughts in this world. It was on the level of the most dangerous entities, yet it wasn't capable of killing high-level beings directly.
In other words, while the mask feared his dark side and trembled like a lamb before a tiger, Bai Yi couldn't entirely defeat it—it was as though an inherent bloodline suppression existed.
Bai Yi turned to Fang Heng, his expression unreadable, and took a few steps forward. Fang Heng's voice grew more urgent: "It's coming closer! Send more people, send more people!"
White Plague:
He seems to know the effect -5 charm will bring.
Bai Yi wasn't sure how to respond. He reached into his bag and tossed over a bottle of sedative. "Drink this."
Fang Heng kept crawling backward, his voice still strained, "It tried to poison me. Maybe I triggered some of its rules. Right now, I'm not cursed or possessed by death."
Bai Yi remained silent as a tentacle suddenly burst from his shoulder. He manipulated it, wrapping the "Embrace of Pain" up with it. Then, pulling out a syringe from his ring, he appeared beside Fang Heng.
Fang Heng's voice grew more panicked, but he kept trying to piece together his observations. Dangerous objects in this era followed certain rules; they wouldn't actively attack unless provoked.
Therefore, every little piece of information he could gather was critical to survival.
"I haven't taken its poison. Now tentacles have exploded from its body, restricting A-031. It's suspected to have teleportation abilities. It's taken out a syringe and is approaching me. I'm resisting."
Fang Heng's voice was sharp as the fear bubbled to the surface. An intense wave of cold surged from him, attempting to freeze Bai Yi in place.
Bai Yi only felt the air grow cooler. He bent down and, to Fang Heng's increasing horror, opened the interface beneath his mask, quickly inserting the needle.
"I failed to resist," Fang Heng's voice now calm, though the walkie-talkie in his hand slipped from his grasp with a click, its busy signal echoing faintly.
Bai Yi sighed, putting the syringe away and picking up the walkie-talkie. "Fang Heng's mental state is too unstable. Hello, my name is Bai Yi, an alchemist from outside Fenghuo. You can look up information on me. I specialize in flesh and blood transformation, which seems to counter the dangerous objects you mentioned."
The walkie-talkie crackled, a faint electric sound followed by stunned silence from the operator who was recording data. Even the Plague Doctors gathered nearby froze. Fang Heng, now subdued by the sedatives, slowly lifted his head to see the "dangerous object" A-031, still vibrating in its entangled state, and found himself dumbfounded by the situation.
Moments later, a calm, female voice responded. There was a hint of cautious curiosity in her tone. "You came from outside the Beacon Fire? Has the spatial ban disappeared?"
"I'm not sure. There are likely tens of thousands of people coming in, and two of them are my friends. If it's convenient, we can talk more. Of course, if you're still concerned, we can arrange a video conference." Bai Yi responded as he effortlessly picked up Fang Heng, heading toward a building that looked like a forgotten shop.
"Alright, please hold on. Someone will be there in five minutes. Don't panic. If you're truly not dangerous, we won't attack." The female voice replied reassuringly.
Bai Yi stepped inside the abandoned store, sensing the stale air and the long absence of anyone. The rusty sign and dust were clear signs that the shop had been closed for ages.
Once inside, he used his mental power to clear the area around them, then placed Fang Heng on the ground beside him. "Are you calm now?"
Fang Heng raised his head slowly, the sedative making even this simple action difficult. Yet, his eyes betrayed a lingering unease as he looked at the tentacles on Bai Yi's shoulder. For the Plague Doctors, these were a symbol of the Black Death Curse, something they feared deeply.
This curse had ravaged the country for hundreds of years, killing civilians, officials, and even powerful figures. In just three hundred years, what had once been a thriving population of hundreds of millions had dwindled to a mere few million survivors. All this destruction was the work of the Black Death Curse.
Bai Yi turned his attention back to the "Embrace of Pain" mask. He ignored Fang Heng for the moment, instead scanning the mask with the panel.
A long string of information appeared:
[Name: Embrace of Pain.]
Attribute: Disaster Object.
Rule: Anyone who looks at it will be killed.
Description: Why do you have bodies? Why can't I have one? I will devour your souls, take your bodies, give you pain—I will become you—unwilling souls.
Note: This disaster object has strong growth potential and immortality. Do not attempt to remove it from the nightmare world; you do not want to see its true form.
Price: -50,000 gold coins.]
Bai Yi stared in confusion. Why was the price negative? And why so expensive? Was he supposed to pay 50,000 to take it?
He couldn't help but think that the profiteer behind this panel was truly outrageous. A total scammer!
But what did the note mean? Wasn't the Embrace of Pain destroyed by the Plague Doctor's final counterattack? It still existed?
His thoughts were interrupted by a voice in his ear. Zero replied after searching keywords.
Zero:
"Disaster Objects: A small number of dangerous objects that have grown from ancient times are highly dangerous and cannot be traced back. These objects are typically immortal and can grow stronger. They were sealed or exiled by the gods."
Zero:
"Dangerous Objects: Some objects with strong negative effects or evil, irrational creatures are categorized as dangerous objects."
Zero:
"Mr. Bai Yi's evil thoughts are technically a dangerous object. But now that you have control over it, it's no longer a threat."
Bai Yi's expression grew solemn. He had originally thought the Black Death Curse was created by ancient gods to bring nightmares, but now it seemed even more terrifying. How could something so potent, capable of making players immortal and growing stronger, be weak?
If the Embrace of Pain had truly survived for so long, what did that mean? Was it exiled by the gods? The thought of bringing disaster objects from the nightmare world to the real world was chilling.
Just then, rapid footsteps echoed as people wearing bird-beak masks and death suits surrounded the area.
"Your companions have arrived. I'll remove the sedative's effect now. Don't scream. You'll get a headache." Bai Yi rubbed his eyebrows as another tentacle burst from his head, only to press it back in frustration.
As he moved forward, he gave Fang Heng the injection that would neutralize the sedative, but before he could fully comprehend the situation, the powerful Plague Doctor arrived alone, calm as ever.
He spoke in a calm tone, "Mr. Bai Yi, we've detected the presence of a dangerous entity on you. For everyone's safety, you'll need to remain in this room for the next ten minutes. After that, additional doctors will arrive with testing equipment to verify whether you pose a threat."
"Okay." Bai Yi nodded. He, too, needed some time to process the information he'd just gathered.
The plague doctors outside the room returned to their companions, visibly more at ease. It was clear they no longer felt the White Plague posed a significant danger. After all, dangerous objects tended to kill, not protect.
In the hundreds of years they had spent containing these threats, they had never encountered a dangerous creature so cooperative.
Bai Yi's mind wandered as he pondered the true intentions of those favored by the gods.
Origin Stones, Dangerous Objects, World Cores.
These were the three things that seemed to draw the favored ones together.
Among them, dangerous objects were the most likely candidates to be involved, as they were not only powerful but also the easiest to acquire. Take the mask Bai Yi held—its power was such that it could summon an entity from the void of dimensional gaps.
A calamity creature might present a formidable, even alien threat to the gods, but it wasn't invincible. An ancient god could, in theory, control such a creature.
After all, while the new gods had the ability to seal and exile disasters, the old gods possessed similar powers. The real difference between them lay in their unity—the new gods worked together, while the old gods operated individually.
If an ancient god were to acquire a disaster object suited to their needs, it was entirely plausible they could enter the Xia continent ahead of time, using the object to enhance their strength.
The second potential source of power was the Origin Stone, the most effective elixir for gods. Though the ancient gods may not control the fundamental rules of the world, their inherent powers were on par with the world's rules themselves.
By consuming an Origin Stone, these gods could replenish their strength, recover from wounds, or even surpass their previous limits.
