At this point, overthinking is futile.
Sometimes, doing nothing is better than creating unnecessary trouble.
The protests by a large number of Konoha ninjas might indirectly pressure the daimyo. That could be seen as a silver lining in an otherwise messy situation.
Now that things had reached this stage, the Third Hokage could only console himself with this thought.
The Daimyo's Mansion was closely tied to the village's affairs. Any upheaval in Konoha would quickly find its way to the daimyo's ears, leaving him with no choice but to act. With the disarmament announcement issued and frontline ninjas withdrawn, the mounting protests would surely make the daimyo anxious.
"I'm worried that your reputation might suffer irreparable damage!"
Koharu Utatane, unable to contain her frustration, raised her voice.
The calmer the Third Hokage appeared, the angrier Koharu grew inside.
But the Third Hokage merely continued smoking his pipe, his expression impassive.
Meanwhile, Mitokado Hamura, sipping tea calmly, showed no signs of worry. Unlike Koharu, he wasn't consumed with anger and concern.
"Koharu, you'll wear yourself out at this rate," he said casually, his words dripping with indifference.
Koharu's frustrations only seemed to intensify as she noticed Hamura's composed demeanor. She glared at him but found no words to retort.
Hamura took another sip of tea, his thoughts wandering.
What was I thinking back then, holding this woman in such high regard?
Now that the idealized image of Koharu had faded, all he could see were her flaws. Her constant nagging, her overreactions—everything about her grated on him.
Elsewhere in Konoha
After finishing his day's work, Shinki strolled through the marketplace, picking up supplies before heading home.
As for the protests against the Third Hokage?
Shinki had one thought: Not my problem.
The Hokage's troubles were none of his business. Let the old man deal with it himself—he was the Hokage, after all.
When Shinki reached his home, he was greeted by an unexpected sight: a group of people gathered outside.
Among them were prominent figures like Uchiha Fugaku, Hyuga Hiashi, and members of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio, accompanied by several unfamiliar faces.
"Master Shinki!"
Everyone greeted him with respect.
All except Nara Shikashin, who frowned and asked, "The village is in chaos, and you're out shopping?"
Shinki grinned, revealing his teeth.
"Well, whether or not the village is chaotic is for the Hokage to decide," he quipped.
Shikashin sighed, speechless at Shinki's carefree attitude.
Shinki opened his door, motioning for everyone to enter.
"Come in. We can talk inside."
Once everyone had filed in, Tsunade, who was already present, instinctively headed to the kitchen to prepare tea.
The others settled themselves in the room. Seeing Tsunade personally making tea left many feeling uneasy.
Tea made by Princess Tsunade herself? Is this even drinkable?
Nara Shikashin eventually broke the ice.
"Let's cut to the chase. Shinki, tell us honestly—does the Hokage actually have a plan, or is this just chaos for the sake of it?"
Shinki chuckled at the bluntness of the question.
"Come now, Shikashin. Do you really think the Hokage would act without a plan?"
Seeing the seriousness on everyone's faces, Shinki's tone turned more somber.
"You don't need to worry. The disarmament announcement is a show for the daimyo. Once the financial dispute is resolved, everything will return to normal. That said, you should prepare for tough times ahead."
"Tough times?" Shikashin asked, his expression turning grave.
Shinki nodded.
"Even after the announcement is revoked, the village will face challenges for at least five years. Task commissions will be heavily impacted, and family industries will face strain. You must hold onto your resources and avoid unnecessary risks. If mismanaged, families could suffer significant losses."
The weight of Shinki's words sank in as everyone considered the implications.
At that moment, Tsunade returned, carrying a teapot.
As she approached, everyone stood up instinctively, flustered by her presence.
Tsunade sighed, waving them off. "Sit down, all of you. Pretend I'm not here—I'm heading to bed soon anyway."
Despite her casual words, her status made it hard for anyone to truly relax.
Shikashin voiced another concern:
"So, does this mean family ninjas will start competing for missions, causing disruptions for smaller clans?"
Shinki nodded again.
"Exactly. Beyond our own clans, the high-ranking families tied to the village's leadership will also enter the fray, competing for resources and money. Smaller families need to brace themselves—they'll bear the brunt of this shift."
This warning weighed heavily on the smaller clans present. Unlike larger families like the Uchiha or Hyuga, their resources were limited. Surviving this economic turbulence would require careful planning.
With the tea served and the reality sinking in, the room grew silent as everyone reflected on the uncertain future ahead.
