Rubbing his stomach, Takumi pulled out the bento box he had brought from his bag.
As he opened the box, a delicious aroma began to waft through the air.
Startled from her slumber, Tsunade suddenly sat up, wiping drool from her mouth and mumbling, "Is it time to eat?"
"....."
After a moment of silence in the break room, Tsunade's mind began to clear, and she realized where she was. Instinctively, her gaze shifted to the bento box in Takumi's hands.
"Want to share?"
Meeting Tsunade's still-drowsy eyes, Takumi lifted the bento box with a smile.
"Ha, that sounds great! I woke up too late this morning and didn't even have breakfast."
Without hesitation, Tsunade snatched the bento box from Takumi, grabbing the chopsticks from inside and starting to eat voraciously, showing no intention of sharing.
That's my bento!
Takumi hadn't expected a simple offer to turn into a confrontation with a food-hungry bandit.
"Mmm~ Delicious! Is this chicken? It tastes great! And hey, can you bring me another one tomorrow?"
As she chewed, Tsunade casually made demands.
Takumi felt the urge to give her a piece of his mind. Here she was, devouring his lunch, and she had the audacity to ask for more.
Remembering how this girl had nearly knocked Jiraiya out cold not long ago, he suppressed his impulse to retort.
Once Tsunade finished, she patted her belly, looking utterly content. "I feel so satisfied. Burp."
Takumi: "....."
Wiping her mouth, Tsunade shoved the empty bento box back into Takumi's hands. "By the way, what level have you reached in chakra control?"
"Third level," Takumi replied, his tone dark.
"Very good."
Tsunade smiled and raised her hand, waving her finger at him. "Kid, we're going to get busy now. Go find a new coat in the cabinet over there. From today on, you'll be working alongside me."
Once he donned a fresh white coat, Takumi began his apprenticeship under Tsunade.
Though he was merely assisting her, there was still much to learn.
As a newcomer, he had to mentally prepare himself to start from the basics.
On the first day, Takumi spent most of his time learning how to properly bandage wounds. Medical ninjas had limited chakra and stamina; they couldn't use healing jutsu on every patient they encountered.
Learning suturing and bandaging was vital knowledge for any medical ninja.
Tsunade didn't need to step in often, as there were plenty of medical ninjas stationed at the hospital and medical department.
However, their skills were nowhere near Tsunade's level.
After observing, Takumi realized that many medical ninjas couldn't even master basic healing jutsu.
After handing over a healed patient to someone else, Tsunade wiped the sweat from her forehead and explained, "Mastering medical jutsu is an extremely difficult A-rank technique. In the entire Konoha hospital and medical department, very few can learn it. I won't take advantage of your kindness. I have relevant books and jutsu scrolls in my cabinet."
"You can read them while I'm on break, as long as you return them afterward."
Though Tsunade was a tough cookie, being unreasonable didn't mean she lacked integrity.
She devoured the bento Takumi brought while also making demands for future meals, but she wouldn't let him go without something in return.
He could browse her collection of books and scrolls for learning. Tsunade wasn't worried about Takumi secretly practicing the techniques; if he could master them, she'd be more than happy.
Most of the jutsu recorded in Tsunade's scrolls were difficult to learn, requiring significant effort and a good measure of talent to master.
With Tsunade's permission, Takumi promptly selected a few books to take home and study, focusing particularly on the healing jutsu.
How hard could it be? He'd find out when he tried.
Three days later, as Takumi gazed at the green glow in his palm, he thought, "Didn't they say this was hard to master?"
How long had he been learning?
Although he had brought the scroll back three days ago, he hadn't had much time to study. During the day, he was busy following Tsunade at the Konoha hospital, and in the evenings, he had to read various books.
To become a medical ninja, he needed to acquire extensive knowledge on a wide range of topics.
Between working as an assistant and reading, the time left for him to practice jutsu was minimal.
Despite that, he had managed to learn the healing jutsu in just three days.
Takumi remembered how much effort Sakura had put into learning it in the anime; she had struggled for a long time before mastering this medical technique.
The next day at Konoha Hospital, Takumi wasted no time in informing Tsunade of his achievement.
"Oh, good to hear," she replied distractedly while writing a patient record. A few seconds later, something clicked in her mind, and she snapped her head up, staring wide-eyed at Takumi. "You mean you've already mastered the healing jutsu? Are you sure it's not just basic healing techniques?"
"Nope, it's definitely the healing jutsu. Is it that difficult?" Takumi replied, raising his hands, both glowing with green chakra.
"...."
Tsunade stared dumbfounded at Takumi's glowing palms, her mouth slightly agape.
How long did it take me to learn this?
Suddenly, she recalled her own past and impatiently asked, "Tell me everything about how you learned the healing jutsu. Don't leave out a single detail."
Is this kid a genius?
No way! How could there be a medical ninja more talented than me, Tsunade?
I don't believe it!
Faced with Tsunade's questioning, Takumi spread his hands and explained, "Every day after returning from the Konoha hospital, I'd wash up, cook dinner, and then spend the rest of my time reading. When I got tired, I'd take out the scroll and practice. That's how I learned."
"Damn it!!"
Tsunade blurted out an expletive.
In just three days, this kid had been following her at the Konoha hospital, returning home to cook for himself, then squeezing in time to read and practice jutsu. And he had managed to learn it all.
She glanced at Takumi, then at the other medical ninjas in the department who had been struggling with the healing jutsu, complaining endlessly.
Was this the difference between a genius and an ordinary person?
I'm losing my mind!
Wait, I'm not losing it; this kid's been learning under me, so he's practically my student now. A great teacher produces great students. Is there anything wrong with that?
Nope!
"Great! You truly live up to being my student, Takumi."
With a proud smile, Tsundade patted Takumi on the shoulder and added, "Study hard and don't get complacent. Once you learn a few applicable medical jutsu and grasp some related knowledge, I'll let you apply for an early exam."
When the exam happens and the standards are set, it's all up to Tsunade.
No one in all of Konoha is more qualified than her.
"I promise to study diligently and won't let you down, Lady Tsunade," Takumi vowed seriously.
Not just to please Tsunade, but he also wanted to pass the medical ninja exam as soon as possible so he could leave that dark, decaying place behind the Hyuga clan.
"Go study. Starting today, you won't have to assist me anymore."
After some consideration, Tsunade decided to let Takumi focus on studying in the break room instead of continuing to assist her.
It wasn't that she was worried about exhausting him; it was that Takumi's learning ability was so impressive that he had already grasped most of the fundamental knowledge required in just a few days.
Rather than having him continue assisting her, it would be better for him to concentrate on studying to prepare for the medical ninja exam.
Tsunade was eager to discover where Takumi's limits lay.
In just three short days, he had easily mastered the healing jutsu. Was this due to talent, or was it simply luck?
