Kapitel 7: The Confrontation

After their gathering by the fire, Kael retreated to his childhood bedroom, memories crowding his thoughts. The walls were decorated with faded posters of bands they had loved and photos of him and Selene grinning at the camera, carefree and innocent.

Lying on his bed, he stared at the ceiling, replaying their last conversation before she left. The hurt in her eyes had been mirrored in his, and he couldn't shake the feeling that somewhere in her departure lay a deeper truth he hadn't yet understood.

Flashback

They had been at their favorite café, sharing milkshakes and discussing their dreams. Selene had always wanted to travel, to see the world beyond.

"What if we go to Paris together?" Kael had suggested, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "We could see the Eiffel Tower, eat croissants… it'd be amazing!"

Selene had smiled, but there was a flicker of something else, fear, perhaps? "What if we don't come back, Kael? What if we get lost in the world and forget everything here?"

He had laughed it off, brushing away her worries. "We wouldn't forget! This is home. We'll always come back."

But they hadn't.

Present Day

Kael sat up, frustration boiling within him. He needed to talk to Selene, to understand why she had left him with nothing but unanswered questions.

As dawn broke the next day, Kael made up his mind. He would confront her, not just for his own sake but for hers too. They deserved closure, whatever that looked like.

At the Beach

The sound of laughter filled the air as the sun rose over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Lyra and Damian were already there, collecting seashells and playfully splashing water at each other.

"Hey, you!" Lyra called, spotting Kael approaching. "Want to join us?"

"Not today," Kael replied, his gaze scanning the beach until it landed on Selene, who was sitting by the water's edge, lost in thought.

Taking a deep breath, he approached her, his heart pounding in his chest. The closer he got, the more his resolve wavered, but he pressed on.

"Selene," he said softly, breaking the silence.

She turned, surprise flashing in her eyes. "Kael."

"Can we talk?"

Selene nodded, her expression shifting from surprise to apprehension as she gestured for him to sit beside her.

The two of them sat in silence for a moment, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore filling the space between them. Kael could feel the tension thickening the air, each heartbeat echoing his uncertainty.

"I've missed this place," Selene finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's strange being back after so long."

Kael nodded, struggling to find the words. "Yeah… it feels different."

"Everything feels different," she replied, her gaze distant. "Especially us."

"I want to understand," he said, finally breaking the barrier that had kept them apart for so long. "Why did you leave? I thought we had everything figured out."

Selene looked at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I didn't want to hurt you, Kael. I thought leaving would give us both a chance to grow, to find ourselves."

"And did you?" he asked, his voice tight with emotion. "Did you find what you were looking for?"

For a moment, she was silent, her expression vulnerable. "I thought I could, but… it's complicated."

Kael took a deep breath, the ache in his chest palpable. "I need to know if we can move forward or if we're just going to keep running in circles."

Selene met his gaze, her expression shifting from fear to determination. "I don't want to keep running. I want to try. But it won't be easy."

"Nothing ever is," he replied, a flicker of hope igniting within him. "But we can try together."

As the sun rose higher, the weight of their shared past began to lift, leaving space for something new, something that could heal the wounds left behind.
