Kapitel 75: There's Something Off About My Pokémon. [75]

Vulpix and Grovyle nodded enthusiastically, ready to dive into their training.

"Vulpix!""Grovyle!"

Lu Cheng smiled as he watched his two Pokémon throw themselves into the practice, feeling a bit grateful for his luck. Some trainers' starter Pokémon, due to their personalities, don't enjoy training. Getting those Pokémon to engage in battles often requires significantly more effort. However, according to Pokémon Association regulations, each owned Pokémon must be registered, and trainers are not allowed to abandon them. As a result, some trainers end up spending a lot of money to get a new Pokémon, while their starter Pokémon is left behind.

In reality, it's not the Pokémon's fault. Lu Cheng knew that even a Pokémon like Slaking, notorious for its "lazy" nature, had a terrifying base stat total and was even considered a pseudo-legendary. In this real world, there were probably trainers capable of bringing out Slaking's full potential. That's why, when dealing with Pokémon, the key was tailoring the training to their individual strengths in order to unlock their maximum potential.

The Double Team training was in full swing. Honestly, Lu Cheng found the mechanics behind this move to be extremely unscientific. Creating clones out of thin air? That's basically ninja-level stuff! What was even more bizarre was that this move was classified as "Normal" type, rather than "Psychic." It left Lu Cheng scratching his head.

Still, using Psychic abilities to perform Double Team certainly sounded like a solid approach. With that thought in mind, Lu Cheng instructed Vulpix, "Try using your Extrasensory to control the release of your Double Team."

Vulpix had just managed to form two faint afterimages, but they disappeared after only a moment. Hearing Lu Cheng's suggestion, the little Pokémon nodded seriously. Its six beautiful tails lifted into the air, glowing with a soft purple hue under the control of its psychic powers. As Vulpix continued to grow, the range of its Extrasensory ability had clearly expanded.

Double Team!

Vulpix's eyes turned blue as it let out a high-pitched cry, and two red shadows began to form around it. However, the two afterimages weren't solid, faintly flickering as if they could vanish at any moment. Lu Cheng frowned and shouted, "Vulpix, use Extrasensory to control the shadows!"

"Vulpix!"

Once again, Vulpix's eyes glowed blue, this time channeling its psychic power. Under the control of Extrasensory, the two shadows slowly began to stabilize, eventually merging into a single solid clone.

"Success!" Lu Cheng exclaimed with joy. Although there was only one, it was a genuine Double Team clone! Vulpix curiously examined the red shadow standing beside the wooden stake. When it reached out to touch the clone, the image instantly shattered.

"Vulpix..." Vulpix let out a disappointed whimper.

"That's already amazing!" Lu Cheng reassured it with a smile, patting Vulpix on the head. "For the first day, this is a great start. We'll take it step by step from here."

Vulpix nodded, a sweet smile appearing on its face.

Vulpix had successfully used its psychic ability to complete Double Team, making Lu Cheng wonder about how to approach Grovyle's training next.

On the other side of the training room, Grovyle was jumping back and forth between wooden stakes, sweating profusely but showing no signs of stopping. Seeing Vulpix master Double Team ahead of it had clearly put a lot of pressure on Grovyle. It was never the type of Pokémon to fall behind.

Despite repeatedly trying to use Double Team, Grovyle couldn't even produce a single clone—only the blurred afterimages from its high-speed movements remained, and those didn't count as proper Double Team at all. Grovyle stood frozen on a stake, looking confused and at a loss.

Lu Cheng observed this and realized that Grovyle was getting anxious. Though it wasn't obvious, there was an undeniable sense of competition between it and Vulpix. Seeing Vulpix successfully pull off Double Team while making no progress itself was bound to leave Grovyle feeling frustrated.

"It's okay," Lu Cheng said, gently patting Grovyle on the head to reassure it. "We'll take our time."

He suddenly realized that he hadn't patted Grovyle's head like this in a long time, not since it evolved from Treecko. Maybe it's because this guy always tries to act cool! Lu Cheng thought with a wry smile.

Grovyle seemed startled for a moment, staring at Lu Cheng. But then, its eyes reignited with determination.

"Grovyle!" It leapt back onto the stake, using Agility to create afterimages while continuing to practice Double Team. Although the results were minimal, Lu Cheng's presence, watching closely and encouraging it, filled Grovyle with confidence.

Without realizing it, the sun had set. Outside, Gao Minglang yawned and muttered, "What's taking that kid so long? He hasn't come out yet... Could he have snuck out?"

Growing suspicious, Gao Minglang recalled Machamp from its flexing pose and hurried toward the training room. But when he peeked inside, the lights were still on, and there he saw Lu Cheng and his two Pokémon, sweating through their training.

"This kid... not bad," Gao Minglang muttered to himself. "He's really putting in the effort..."

"Use Double Team, Grovyle!" Lu Cheng continued to give the same instruction, but Grovyle only managed to use Agility again.

"Grovyle!"

Grovyle lost its balance and fell hard off the wooden stake. Lu Cheng and Vulpix hurried over to help it up.

"That's not the right way to train Double Team," Lu Cheng was deep in thought, trying to figure out how to help Grovyle master the technique, when a voice casually rang out.

Gao Minglang, head held high, approached Lu Cheng and said, "Kid, you're going about this training all wrong!"

Lu Cheng was a bit taken aback by Gao Minglang's comment. "Uncle, please don't distract me," Lu Cheng said with a wry smile, "I'll give you the money after I'm done."

"You little brat!" Gao Minglang glared at him, "I'm telling you the right way, and you don't even believe me!"

Lu Cheng looked at Gao Minglang suspiciously. With his big belly and laid-back demeanor, he didn't exactly look like a seasoned trainer. "You know how to train Double Team?" Lu Cheng asked, doubtful.

"Hmph, seems like you don't recognize talent when you see it!" Gao Minglang scoffed, crossing his arms. "For a Pokémon like Vulpix, with psychic abilities, sure, using Extrasensory to complete Double Team makes sense. But for a Pokémon like Grovyle, which relies on high mobility, training Double Team is a whole different story!"

Gao Minglang's words immediately caught Lu Cheng's attention. Despite his unreliable appearance, what he said hit right on the mark!

Eager, Lu Cheng asked, "So how should Grovyle train to master Double Team?"

Gao Minglang squinted at Lu Cheng, then extended one finger. Lu Cheng blinked in confusion before pulling out a hundred-yuan note from his pocket and slipping it into the man's hand. Gao Minglang gripped the bill tightly with four fingers, looked up at the sky, and kept that one finger outstretched.

With a sigh, Lu Cheng gritted his teeth and pulled out a total of one thousand yuan, handing it all over. Gao Minglang's face lit up as he pocketed the cash with impressive speed, then cleared his throat.

"Ahem, the training method is actually pretty simple!" he said with a smug grin. "You need to let Grovyle practice Double Team through real combat, so it can quickly adapt and master the move!"
