Cameran Palace.
Inside the Pokémon Center.
Johan handed his Pokémon over to Nurse Joy.
Although Gengar and the others hadn't suffered much damage, and Gengar's stamina was still abundant, it was necessary to conduct a thorough recovery and examination after so many battles.
"Don't worry, Professor Johan. Leave it to us," Nurse Joy said with a warm smile.
"Lucky~~"
Johan was slightly surprised that Cameran Palace's Nurse Joy recognized him, but he trusted the Pokémon Center's medical expertise.
"Thank you," he said.
Even though the royal family had invited them to stay in the castle that evening, Johan decided to stay at the Pokémon Center to be closer to his team.
Steven and the others chose to stay there as well.
The next day.
Cameran Palace Arena.
Amid thunderous cheers, the team exhibition matches officially began.
Teams formed by invited trainers and participants gathered at the arena.
Since this was just an exhibition, Johan felt no pressure as the team leader. With Steven, Flannery, and Roxanne's capabilities, he had no concerns at all.
After giving the trio a few instructions, Johan took a seat in the audience.
Unlike traditional inter-university team competitions, where tactics and rotation order were crucial, this event featured all three participants battling simultaneously in a 3v3 format.
Each trainer commanded one Pokémon at a time, and each had three Pokémon total. The matches were fast-paced, emphasizing aggressive strategies.
It was said that these team battles were initially designed to allow people in peaceful times to experience a glimpse of the chaos and destruction of the wars that once plagued the Pokémon world.
The battles served as a reminder of the horrors of war and the preciousness of peace.
Over time, however, the competition evolved into a performance-oriented spectacle.
Gengar raised its hand at a nearby snack vendor.
"Ka-kah!"
Popcorn!
Watching the vendor expertly serve snacks, Johan suddenly thought:
If the Rocket Trio were here with their business skills, they'd probably make a killing at this event.
Next time, should I bring them along for such large-scale events?
The idea of a potential windfall for his café made Johan slightly tempted.
"Sir?"
The vendor's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
"Oh."
Johan snapped back to reality.
Turning his head, he saw Gengar clutching two giant tubs of popcorn, with Vulpix, Tinkatuff, and Dratini each holding their own.
He sighed but still paid the bill.
"Sir, there are also macarons, cakes, and other desserts over there. If you're interested, feel free to bring your Pokémon to check them out," the vendor added before leaving.
Johan froze.
Turning to his side... the four little ones were gone!
"Forget it. It's a rare festival, a rare...," he muttered, trying to console himself, shifting his focus back to the arena.
Steven didn't send out his shiny Metagross, but even with Aggron alone, he easily dominated the field.
"Woo?"
A soft cry brought Johan's attention back to his side.
"Hm? You came back?" he asked, smiling when he saw Vulpix.
"Still the one who cares about me the most."
He patted his lap invitingly.
However, Vulpix's pale blue eyes showed hesitation, curiosity, and doubt.
"Hmm?"
Johan blinked.
But the next moment, Vulpix jumped lightly onto his lap.
After kneading his legs a few times like a cat, it curled up.
As someone who knew his Vulpix best, Johan quickly realized something was off.
This... didn't seem to be his Vulpix.
To confirm his suspicion, Johan hesitated briefly before placing his hand on its head and gently petting it.
"Woo~~"
The little one closed its eyes in contentment, purring softly.
The texture and feel were identical to his Vulpix, yet Johan was more certain than ever—this wasn't his Pokémon.
Did someone's Vulpix run off and mistake me for its trainer?
Wait a minute!
An idea suddenly struck Johan, making his expression turn strange.
He took out a transparent energy cube and offered it.
"Woo?"
The little one's eyes lit up, its nose twitching as it gobbled up the cube in one bite, cheeks puffing out adorably.
Its movements confirmed Johan's suspicion.
His own Vulpix would eat energy cubes delicately, taking small bites to avoid choking.
Johan was now certain of the identity of the Pokémon on his lap.
"Woo~~"
Still unaware of its discovery, the little one sniffed curiously at Johan's chest, mimicking Vulpix's behavior.
Suddenly, its ears perked up, twitching slightly.
In an instant, it leaped off Johan's lap and scurried away, disappearing into the crowd.
A Taillow soon flew out from another part of the audience.
Johan's Pokédex lit up, displaying its data:
Mew, the New Species Pokémon. Psychic-type.
Good grief.
It was indeed the playful shapeshifter!
Mew was known for its mischievous nature, often transforming into other Pokémon to interact with children or curious Pokémon.
While typically lively and curious, Mew sometimes made bold, adventurous decisions.
Frowning slightly, Johan muttered to himself:
"With Mew showing up, why do I feel like things are about to get complicated?"
"Ka-kah~~"
Gengar and the others returned, their arms full of snacks, interrupting Johan's thoughts.
"Woo~~"
Vulpix jumped onto Johan's lap, curling up in its usual spot.
Yet, it quickly stood up, sniffing the air suspiciously.
"Woo?"
Why does it smell like another Pokémon was here?
Johan stiffened, clearing his throat.
"Ah, wow! Look at Steven's Aggron—so brave!" he exclaimed, feigning excitement as he furiously petted Vulpix's head.
The vigorous head rub left Vulpix dazed and forgetful of its earlier suspicion.
The match continued smoothly, with Steven's team soon advancing to the semifinals.
"Compared to last night, this feels like bullying kids," Johan muttered under his breath.
"And now, let us congratulate the team from Hoenn's Rustboro Pokémon Academy—Team Johan—for their triumphant victory in the team exhibition match!"
Fireworks exploded as the host's enthusiastic voice announced the result.
Team Johan?
When did they name the team?
While Johan wasn't surprised by their victory—Steven alone could sweep most opponents—the name caught him off guard.
As the crowd dispersed, Johan and his team exited the arena.
"Professor, here are the medal and trophy!" Flannery said, handing him the items excitedly.
Taking them, Johan turned and pried open Gengar's mouth, shoving the medal and trophy inside.
"Ka-kah?"
Gengar blinked in confusion.
"We'll have the principal put them in a display case," Johan explained.
"Professor, those are trophies and medals, not certificates!"
"Fine, then put them in the showcase."
"Now that's more like it!"
With laughter and chatter, the group left the arena.
"Professor, since we won, shouldn't you treat us?" Flannery asked, rubbing her stomach.
"Of course," Johan replied with a sly smile, pointing to a nearby food stall.
"They have 'Rage Buns.' Eat as much as you want."
Flannery puffed up her cheeks indignantly, hands on her hips.
"Professor, you're so stingy!"
Steven and Roxanne chuckled.
Though both were relatively reserved, having someone like Flannery to lighten the mood was a welcome change.
"Hey, young man!"
From the food stall, a muscular man called out, his eyes lighting up when he spotted Johan.
"You want a bun?"
The group turned to see the speaker and collectively froze in shock.
"Bruno of the Elite Four?!" Flannery exclaimed.
Johan's expression turned slightly awkward.
Bruno of the Kanto Elite Four was casually selling buns here?
"These 'Rage Buns' are the real deal! Want to give them a try?" Bruno asked, grinning.
"Ka-kah!"
Gengar floated over immediately, its interest piqued.
"You want one?"
Bruno asked, unphased by Gengar's fearsome grin.
"Ka-kah ka-kah!"
Gengar nodded eagerly.
"Good!"
Bruno laughed heartily, clearly pleased by Gengar's enthusiasm.
Ten minutes later.
Sitting on a nearby bench, Johan and the others watched Gengar and Bruno, now walking side by side with arms slung around each other's shoulders.
"Professor, Gengar sure can eat," Flannery remarked.
Johan's eye twitched.
*Can eat? If there were an eating competition, Gengar would probably out-eat
a Snorlax.*
"Honestly, if I hadn't seen it myself, I'd never believe the Kanto Fighting-type Elite Four would buddy up with a Gengar," Roxanne added.
After another few minutes, Bruno and Gengar returned, still chatting.
"Not quite full, but close enough," Bruno remarked with a satisfied grin.
"Bruno, are you here on a mission?" Johan asked.
"No," Bruno replied, shaking his head. "Just training."
Bruno was known for his love of traveling and training.
The Fighting-type specialist then turned to Johan, his expression serious.
"Young man, how about a good old-fashioned battle—fist to fist?"
