Kapitel 33: Chapter 33: Friends on the Outside
Days turned into weeks, and the tension in the detention center grew thicker. The guards kept their distance from Cole, but their eyes followed him everywhere he went. He knew they were waiting for him to slip up, waiting for an excuse to come after him again.
But Cole kept his head down, focusing on the fights and biding his time. He knew he couldn't stay in this place forever. Sooner or later, he'd get out, and when he did, he had to be ready.
One afternoon, as Cole sat in the yard, watching the other detainees play a halfhearted game of basketball, a familiar face appeared at the fence.
It was Lina.
Cole's heart skipped a beat, and he quickly made his way over to her. She looked tired, but there was a glimmer of hope in her eyes that hadn't been there before.
"You're back," Cole said, his voice filled with relief.
Lina smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Yeah. I wanted to check on you."
Cole leaned against the fence, his hands gripping the cold metal. "I'm still here. Still fighting."
"I know," Lina said softly. "I've been keeping up with everything."
Cole frowned. "How's Ty? And Zack?"
"They're good," Lina replied, her voice steady. "Ty's been keeping out of trouble, mostly. And Zack's… well, he's Zack."
Cole chuckled, the tension in his chest easing slightly. "Yeah, that sounds about right."
Lina's expression grew more serious. "Cole, I've been talking to Helen."
Cole raised an eyebrow. "And?"
"And… she thinks she might have a way to get you out of here," Lina said, her voice low and cautious.
Cole's heart raced. "How?"
"She's working on it," Lina said quickly, her eyes darting around to make sure no one was listening. "It's not a guarantee, but she thinks there's a chance. A legal loophole or something."
Cole clenched his fists, hope surging through him. He hadn't allowed himself to dream of getting out of this place—not really. But now, with Lina standing in front of him, offering him a glimmer of hope, he couldn't help but believe.
"Just hang in there a little longer, okay?" Lina said, her voice softening. "We're doing everything we can."
Cole nodded, his mind racing. He had been so focused on surviving, so focused on the fights and the guards and everything else, that he hadn't stopped to think about what came next. But now, the possibility of freedom was hanging in front of him, just out of reach.
"I'm not giving up," Cole said firmly, his eyes locked on Lina's. "I'll get out of here. I promise."
Lina smiled, her eyes filled with warmth. "I know you will."
